All 3D graphics are just 2D. The difference is pixel count and render speed that tricks our brains into not seeing the flat canvas screen.

Yeah, I get it...but the context of these swing meters is pretty immediately obvious. They want accuracy and good timing so obviously you need to hit certain points on the meter. The colour of those points doesn't matter you just need to hit the centre of them. Most of the golf games they've ever played have the 3 button press system to set power and accuracy and require you to use the lengths the clubs can hit to work out where on the power gauge you need to hit. Arin really didn't take in any of that at all.

I had a grandparent who got this for me in the 90s.. I didn't like golf, and never played a golf game.. but I was a poor kid in the 90s, so we played what we had.. and I played the shit out of this! Ended up sparking a bit of love for golf games! Super fun to see the grumps play it!

...So the reason your meter wasn't coming back down was because you would press the button too late. And like you observed, when you don't press anything, the gauge resets. So instead of hitting it at the top, you were hitting it at the bottom, minimizing your power. Like with every golf game, the first click is your power, and the second is your accuracy. You want to click it as high as you can go (some golf games have a red sweet spot up at the top of the gauge for the idea of swinging too hard to your own detriment). Then, it will come back down and you need to hit it on the accuracy part. You are aiming for the red sweet spot, because that decides where on the ball you hit it. Hit it more on the left and the ball spins right. If you hit further right, the ball will spin to the left. Hit the middle of the red part and you're hitting a sweet spot on the ball to get it in the direction you're pointed. Unlike the power of your swing, the accuracy doesn't usually reset, so if you miss the bar completely, you miss the ball completely or in some games, your shot will just go ridiculously wild. This is pretty much how almost every golf game works (YES including the red sweet spot part because it's supposed to stand out from the rest of the meter), so once you understand that, it's easy to get a grasp on any of them~

May the Arin judgement commence (in good fun): Power gauge gets overfilled and whenever it does Arin takes one less button press to shoot, plus the shot whifs. Arin takes 10min to notice. Game provides Arin with a way to perform super light shots that Arin uses on accident, until he learns how to do it. Then when a light shot is convenient he uses any other thing. Power gauge includes a red sweet spot with two light blue spots next to it and any time he hit's it on the light blue to the left of the red the ball veers to the right. It takes him nearly 15min to notice.

I’ve always wondered about these old 90s game that don’t work. Did they just never try playing it before release? Did they not care? How did the stores not prevent these from getting on shelves? Like what was happening. I guess it was a new industry without regulation yet.
