Open back, dynamic sound, comfortable, and do not require an external DAC and amp to get a great sound out of them? Yup, these will be great first “good” headphones for someone. I love my Sennheiser HD650s, but I can’t recommend them to everyone as first hi-fi headphones, because you need a good DAC and amp for them to really start opening up.

Hey Mike! Any chance for a revisit to the MDR-7506? Would love to hear a recent comparison on them, all from build quality to how they sound driven without a amplifier from a computer or phone?

I still have 650. I think this has better bass and does not require an amp to drive. great with portable music players.

Take note these are supposedly made with spatial audio in mind. I would love to try them out. They are open back. Not Semi-open.

Note: since they are self-powered, they cannot readily be converted to balanced phones without tossing out the built in amplifiers. The amps may also be doing some EQ to get them to sound better so not a good idea to mess with them. Leave cheap-enough alone.
