Spent an early Spring day fly fishing/euro nymphing a Virginia tailwater full of wild rainbow trout. I started nymphing a run, but spent most of the day fishing some beautiful pocket water.
It was a fantastic day, as I had action the entire time. There was a lot of midge activity and a ton of fish were caught on size 16 perdigons (Olive Flash and a Falangista) and a size 20 France Midge (both black and olive).
I show you how I approach pocket water and give you tips along the way.
Hope you enjoy.
Tight lines!

Great, helpful stuff as usual Cory. Your explanations about drifts and positioning are very helpful. My home waters are very narrow so vertical sighters at right angles to the flow are tough to get. Any suggestions for fishing narrower water where straight upstream is almost required and verticals are rare if not impossible?
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum Жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful, Tim. Appreciate it. I like to fish straight upstream alot. Fishing a longer rod can help you get (almost) vertical by holding your rod tip up higher starting at about 20ft in front of you, if conditions allow to get closer to the fish. Depending on the depth, you can lengthen your tippet and make longer straight upstream casts to get your bugs down (you won't get vertical-but you will get them down) Also floating the sighter or dry dropper is a deadly upstream technique. It really is all about conditions, currents flows, etc... in what the fish allow you to do. Without seeing the stream-it is tough for me to say, but I hope this helps. Thanks for watching and good luck!

@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Shawn. Really appreciate it! Glad it's been helping. I have switched to Airflo. Euro lines are made really thin-they do get beat up and start peeling. In my opinion, Airflo makes one of, if not, the toughest and most durable euro lines out there. Thanks for watching.

Hey, 0056. Yes, with a tuck, I got my bugs down really quick. That's why it is such an important cast. I've done a video on the tuck cast here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y8-jq82gsNPPpGg.htmlsi=EdpP0RtWKF3oHjqM Hope this helps and good luck with your learning curve!

I'm curious about your leader setup. It looks like your using a tactical line with a relatively short mono leader. I'm new to euro and have only fished for wild fish in the winter using #26 and #28 midges with a drop shot rig. I am using a tactical line with about a 15' leader and it seems to work well. I haven't really tried any perdigons yet. I would like to know what you think.
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum Жыл бұрын
Paul, my leader is approx 23ft to my tippet ring coming off my Euro line. If you would like to see it, watch this video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lbKje6R13MvQYmw.html A drop shot certainly works, especially with smaller flies like you are using, but I prefer to have my weight in the flies themselves. It more versatile this way. Hope this helps. Appreciate you watching.

Cory, Did u say you were using a tuck cast to control your sink on the flies? R u using split shot or just a 3.3 bead? Single or double flies? Also, tried you net management set. Works pretty good. Makes sense. May try something besides para cord. I don’t need 100 yds and that’s the smallest amount I could find. Best, Tony
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum Жыл бұрын
Tony, I use the tuck to drive the bugs down to depth right away. When fishing real quick pocket water, where you have little time for your bugs to sink, it is the best way to accomplish it. I don't use split shot-my weight is in the bugs. Most of that time I had a 3.3 bead on bottom (a couple of times a 2.8). I was switching between a single fly and double (my dropper was a 2.5). Glad the net is working for you. You definitely get a lifetime supply of paracord when you buy it. Tight lines to you!

how are you able to get your line so tight, so quick? the tuck cast, combined with the weight of the nymph? I'm really watching your vids with a close eye, trying to learn as much as I can. You're my mentor whether you know it or not :)
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum Жыл бұрын
Haha...glad to be your mentor, Jeff! It is all about the cast, and yes, the tuck cast. Not so much the weight, that is dependent on the depth/current/conditions. If you get out in your yard and really practice having those bugs hit first in the grass and get the immediate tight line up to your rod tip -it will help tremendously. Even in shallow water, you are using some version of a tuck (just stopping your rod above parallel so you bugs hit first and then a straight line to the rod tip). I have a casting video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ga-UiNaDp5-pgo0.html Keep at it and hope this helps.

Hi Cory, while I was healing up from prostate cancer surgery I studied your videos quite a bit, watching some of them several times. Once given the go ahead to fish in January, I have done pretty well with it, catching at least a couple of holdovers each time out. Now that streams around here are restocked, the success has been great. Stockies are easy pickings, but I caught one last night that was no stockie, unless our state is putting in 22" browns now! An absolute thrill to seal the deal on that beast! Keep up the good work, Cory. Your videos are both entertaining and educational. Best, Sam

Cory, this visual unlocked my home waters to me. Seeing that tuck cast in this perspective made Joe Humphrey's and George Daniel's words all click and I've been pulling fish out of the weirdest pockets since then. It is so frickin' cool being able to toss your nymphs under fast heavy water to get to those nice fishy pockets no one believes are there. Thank you, big fan of your videos and technique!! Do you have any tips getting better hooksets and fighting fish on the 2wt? I keep losing fish(popping off, not breaking off) on my 10 ft 2wt Recon and I really want to figure it out. I switch out to my 4wt Cortland Nymph and land more fish! I love everything else on the 2wt but just cant seem to keep them on.

Hey Kyle. Appreciate the kind words and glad the videos are helping! I use a couple of T&T 2wts and never have a problem keeping fish pinned. I don't change my style between my 2wts and 3wts. I would say it is the "bounce" effect of the rod that causes the loss of a lot of fish (especially smaller ones), but that is usually with stiffer rods. It could be that your 2wt is super limber and you may not be driving the hook home, but I haven't heard of that problem with the Recon. What size tippet do you usually use with your 2wt? This is a finesse rod and does better with lighter leaders and lighter tippet.

@@OldDominionTroutBumThat could be my issue. I find myself sticking to that 4x at the end of a mono rig always hesitating to go down to my 5x and 6x spools scared to break off. I've gotten comfy on the 4wt and aggressively playing fish I think I need to lighten up on my technique so I can manage that lighter tippet!!
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 3 ай бұрын
@KyleVelasco that is the problem. A 2wt rod is built for 6 and 7x. Not even 5x. The 4wt was built for 4 and 5x.

@@OldDominionTroutBum thanks for your responses and your wisdom. going to get a 7x spool and go out there next with only the 6x and 7x spools to get myself using em.

Great video. Also, I appreciate your important message in your recent IG post. Regarding the latter, may I ask your favorite straight and curved barbless hook brand/model? If size range matters, I’m thinking 14-16 range.

Thank you, Austin. Appreciate it. For straight hooks, I like the Hanak 400 and the Dohiku 302 & 303. For curved, I like the Hanak 450 and The Dohiku 644. I use a lot of these hooks. The 644 I use an inverted bead. The Dohiku 303 is a straight hook (non-jig). I use inverted and slotted beads with it as well. Thanks so much for watching.

@@OldDominionTroutBum Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I too like Dohiku. The Hanak are tough for me to track down. On the Dohiku 302, do prefer the standard 302 or the 302 SP? I'm excited to try the 303.

It is beautiful water and rainbows, James. I usually smoke JR brand cigars when fishing. You can get some really good smokes from there and not feel too bad if one gets a little wet. I was smoking a Brocatus (Domincans). They are good. Appreciate you watching!
