In this episode I'm detecting a forest that looked like a hopeless case, until...
It was one of these days, when you are not even sure if you should leave home. It is cold and just starts raining when you get out of the house. You drive with a bus to an ugly looking, noisy area. You arrive with little hopes and walk towards an area that appears (rather recently) modified...
The first coil swings reveal a 1800's coin, but you realize very fast, that this was just a lucky find. You look around and see garbage left by previous detectorists...
Depth wasn't a big problem here, the layer of humus was relatively thin. The finds were just not there and the area was filled with garbage.
After a while I already "gave up" on the idea of finding anything. When the amount of foil and other trash increased, I just kept walking without paying attention to any of it. When I swung the coil over one particular item and a bad sounding signal appeared, I decided to dig. Why? I don't know to be honest. Maybe because it sounded bad, compared to all the previous "nice", clean and shallow foil signals.
You saw what happened... Something round came out, but the edge was white. Not silver shiny but white. I thought, it might be a crusty, corroded zinc Pfennig at first, but I realized quickly that this wasn't the case.
When I saw a Roman silver coin, I could not believe my eyes... Who would have expected such a find, after all the previous disappointment? Not me.
The hole revealed another relic. A nail. This time I'm 100% sure that it's Roman :). The coin acted basically as a certificate. The big question is... what was there first, the coin, or the nail?
I would do (almost) anything to be able to use a time machine and see the moment unfold, when an item like this gets lost.
The spot seemed clean of other (old) iron. I assume, this was a "one time drop".
A Roman was walking through the woods (or whatever it was at that time), stumbled, fell down, or lost balance. A nail came of his sandal and a coin fell out of his pouch. 1900 years later our paths crossed at the same exact position. How lucky was that?
I don't want to get "spiritual", but I think metal detecting Gods played (once again) a big part in it...
UPDATE: I never thought that I could repeat something like that this year... I was wrong. check out my latest video with another spectacular, 1700 years old find under similar circumstances: • Extreme Luck - Metal D...
And this probably is my best hunt of 2020: • Napoleonic Times... St...
I hope you enjoyed this adventure.
P.s. I could "compress" the video and show less trash, to make it a little bit more "appealing" (to some), but this would go against the spirit of my channel. The surrounding and the circumstances that lead to a find have (for me) the same (or greater) importance as the find itself.
And because every adventure has its own story (written by metal detecting Gods), cutting out the "ugly" part is out of question!
Thanks for watching.
