Welcome to the third of a 6-part series on Spiccato. Episode 3, "Heavy Spiccato", covers a practice process that develops a dark, slow, powerful spiccato that happens very close to the frog.

Spiccato families and tempos of significant orchestra excerpts:
IMPORTANT NOTE #1: All tempos are approximations, subject to the whims of the conductor.
IMPORTANT NOTE #2: All tempos are marked as 16th notes per quarter note. All tempos in compound meter (6/8, 9/8, etc) have been converted to the equivalent bow stroke tempo as measured in 16th notes.
Example: In 6/8 time, Eighth notes @ dotted quarter = 120 is the same speed as 16th notes in 4/4 time at quarter = 90. (compound tempo * 0.75 = simple tempo)

Thank you Dennis! I've recently started to pin down references or guidelines about bow tightness. Like, what would be the first technique/playing style not working when it's too tight and too loose. Just to speed up the process of realizing where you ended up on the parameter every morning when screwing it. I'd be very interested in your view about it. Many thanks for you doing these series!

Thanks, Karl. That's a great question, and I don't think I can answer that as quickly as I'd like. The parameter of how tight to tighten the bow is a result of decades of playing so many different styles of music. The tightness of the hair is very important in the response of the stroke. Generally, I like to keep the hair as loose as possible for the music I need to play. When I'm doing detache or legato, I keep it very loose, but not so loose that the stick grinds into the hair. I keep the hair loose enough that "I can push the stick into the hair with a lot of weight". I don't want the stick to go easily to the hair, so I basically find out how much force I'll exert during the piece, and loosen it up to JUST tighter than that. I hope that makes sense. I want the hair to be able to wrap around the string for a lot of contact. If I'm doing heavy spiccato, I tighten it up more, although there's really no chance I'll be hitting the stick to the hair while at the frog. The common issue I see is players over-tightening their bows so there is almost no spring in the stick any more, and the hair tends to skim across the string. I suggest keeping it as loose as possible for the needed bow stroke. I hope that helps - you'll learn a lot through experimentation. good luck and let me know if you learn anything through it! Best, Dennis

Thank you so much for doing this! I really wish this existed when I started to learn spiccato about 10 years ago. One suggestion would be to let us know which of the volumes the associated exercise is in. Thanks again!

Hi, Steve - thank you very much for this - it's a great idea! I hadn't thought of that at all. Once I cover all of the exercises, I'll be having some livestreams of straight playthroughs of the volumes, so you all can see when they appear. Otherwise, that really would be helpful to say where they are. Thank you for that. Happy new year to you and yours, and I hope you're well. Dennis

Hi Dennis, I really appreciate your approach! You are my current teacher even tho' we've not met. Here's my question about the spiccato exercise as written on your Incredibly Useful Exercises book: Why are there bow changes in the middle of the 6/8, 4/4 & 6/16 bars? Why & how would we do those? Thanks, Leslie

Hi, Leslie - thank you for the feedback, and I'm honored to be an absentee mentor. The bow changes you mention, I'm embarrassed to say, are actually misprints. I can't remember why I put them in in the first place, but there they are. They're at the top of the punch list for the second edition. You're right - just keep them down bows. They're still jarring on my eyes when I see them. I appreciate the notice, though! Happy new year to you and yours, and I hope you're well! Dennis
