Hi Dennis, I enjoyed this video a lot! I was wondering if this is applicable to the german bow, specifically I'm more curious about the strengthment and endurance of the thumb.
@Anapapass

It is necessary to move the fingers and thumb for this exercise? It is also good for german bow players to elevate a little bit the elbow?

Hi, Ana - thanks for the note and support! Yes, it's applicable to German bow, but it doesn't exercise the same thumb muscles as the French bow. You can test it by playing loud 16th notes at the tip, and see what muscles in the hand start to fatigue first. You don't need the pinky for this, so that won't be affected. I recommend using just your thumb and index finger, but I know there are a lot of different schools of German bow. It always helps me to elevate my right elbow a little when I get to the tip - this adds some leverage to the thumb. I hope that helps. Have a great week!

Hi Dennis, I love this series. It's so good to have inspiration for practice, especially in these times. Thank you for that! Looking at the volumes, I was wondering if volume 17 contains basically the same as all the other volumes together?
@incrediblyusefulexercises

Hi, Len. Thanks for the support! Volume 17 has all of the exercises in alphabetical order. Volumes 1-16 are those exercises framed in a (about) 1-hour workout each, focusing on different performance aspects. Many of the exercises repeat. The workout books are designed to be fire-and-forget page-turning workouts to save time of switching between books. I recommend getting volume 17 to learn the exercises, then try one or two of the workout books to see if you'd benefit from those kinds of workout structure. Let me know how it goes, and happy new year!

Thanks for a great lesson, I looked for a while for. I struggle with moving over several strings while playing 16th. It would be great, if could add a lesson how to practice that. Best wishes from Berlin (Germany), Stephan

Thanks, Stephan. Much appreciated. Yes, me too. I'll think about it and see if I can put one together. The exercise that helps me is called "Barriolage", and is slurred string crossings across all 4 open strings. Then I separate the notes, and play separate bows across all 4 open strings slowly, then gradually speed up. The repetition helps me. I hope that makes sense. Good luck and I hope you're well. DW

For this exercise, are you concerned with choking the sound at all?
@incrediblyusefulexercises
@incrediblyusefulexercises 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Jeremiah. Great question. Mic'ing the sound is one of my frustrations with this series - I wish there were a way to get the whole color of tone that my English bass gives, but there's just no easy way. Short answer - in this exercise I'm really focusing on articulation and the "pop". After these exercises, I love the way my legato sounds, because my shoulder is exhausted. I know the tone is "crushed" a little, but it's only because I'm keeping my shoulder stressed for 30 straight seconds. After the exercise, it's not an issue. Happy new year!
