Do you recomment Emerys book for german bow players equally? Thank you.

Yes, absolutely. It’s not limited to either. Good question - thank you

Hi Dennis, you mentioned having to work for a year on fixing your “door knobbing” habit; did you consciously work on it every time you used the bow, or did you focus on correcting the issue in isolated sessions? I’m afraid I’m undoing the good work of the exercise every time I play other stuff that allows the bad habit to creep back in. Thanks 🙏

Hi, Manuel. Thank you for the thought - it's a great question, and I"ve been thinking a lot about it. I think the answer lies in my playing at the Houston opera. When we play operas, we play two at a time, running on alternating nights. The toughest combinations for me are when one opera is a "heavy", and one is Handel. One night, I'll be digging into the string with a pretty active right hand, and then for Handel, (especially with the period-style conductors), I'm using an early classical bow with a sensitive response, I have to turn my right hand OFF, neutralize my bow hold, and use my arm. It's like learning to play the bass all over again. When I'm playing like that, and it's working really well, the bow responds to correct technique. Any time I try to press the bow, or do what I did the previous night, the string will scratch, or not grab. So the only way the bow will work is if my wrist is not rotating or spinning. Then my arm gets to do all the work, and it's easy. I think that' the bottom line - keep my right arm as simple as possible. Then, I get it, and I go back to the "heavy" opera, and it's spectacular. I learned that the good habits I learned in period opera transferred to the modern operas, but not the other way around. The modern bow and steel strings are too forgiving for bad technique, so it can creep in without penalty. I hope this answer gives some insight. Your question really is perfect. Let me know if that helps. Happy new year to you and yours, and I hope you're well. Dennis

Does this work for German bow?

Badtvset, yes, absolutely. The curves are the same, no matter which bow you use, and curve #4 is still the biggest challenge.
