FDR hid his disability because he felt that the nation needed to see him appear to have vigor. During his four campaigns for office, during the Great Depression, during World War 2. I understand his logic and why the press agreed to cover-up his disability. However, I think it would be OK to show-up in his wheelchair on certain occasions, away from the cameras, such as VA Hospitals. People of all races and all classes have struggles to deal with, including Presidents.

What this professor discovered proves that Freedom of The Press in America is just a BIG Joke !!! And every American is just another Punch Line to that SICK Joke !!! What do elections in America even mean if such details about a candidate can be hidden from voters ? What else and what more is the News Media willing to hide about our leaders ?

My parents, who were not particularly well informed, knew that he had polio & wore braces. His trips to Warm Springs Georgia were well known as well. I think the idea that the public didn't know the truth about his disability is a myth.

@@jm-xg7lm It's a disease. Up until Salk found a vaccine in the 50s, they used to have terrible outbreaks here in the US. I think FDR caught it when he'd gone swimming or something. I think he went home & laid down for a nap & never walked again. It was that bad.

It’s such a shame that clips of FDR in his wheelchair and clips of FDR walking with his braces are so few and far between

I love how they say "people at the time who had disabilities were looked down apon", as if modern day is any different. Society is more ablist today than it's ever been.

PS: I SOMETIMES GET THE FEELING THAT THE US PUBLIC KNEW OF FDR'S DISABILITY, BUT DIDN'T WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE IT PUBLICLY, IT WAS JUST TOO "DELICATE A SUBJECT," YET STUPID REALLY, TO MENTION AT THE TIME OF FDR'S 4 TERM TENURE IN OFFICE. FRANKLY HE STAYED IN OFFICE FAR TOO LONG & IT AFFECTED HIS HEALTH MOST NEGATIVELY. HE PASSED AWAY ON APRIL 12, 1945 OF A CEREBRAL HEMMORAGE AT THE LITTLE WHITE HOUSE IN WARM SPRINGS, GA ONE MONTH & 12 DAYS AFTER ADDRESSING THE CONGRESS ON THE YALTA CONFERENCE PARLEY FROM FEB 4-12TH, 1945 IN SOUTH RUSSIA, THE FORMER SOVIET UNION.
