You guys were amazed by the effects of this movie today. Imagine how the people felt watching it in 1996 lol. It was mind blowing. And he knew where the wife was because they made a plan to meet up there b4 the separated. So he just went back hoping she was there. Same reason she stayed even tho the place was destroyed.

You guys were confused, thinking the ship they were attacking was the one Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum's characters were on. They were on the main ship in space which is as big as a quarter of the moon, which would make it 270,000 miles/435,000 kiliometers wide. The one the president and others were attacking was a group of smaller ships that came down from the main one in space and there were several of them all over the world. Those are 15 miles/24 kilometers wide themselves. They were in USA, France, Russia, The Middle East, Africa ect. Everywhere. Then the small attack ships were in both the main ship and the ships on earth.

So, doesn’t change the point but those numbers are way off, I’m sure just a simple mistake pulling numbers from somewhere and not catching it but the numbers OP gives would make the ships larger than the distance from the earth to the moon (~250,000 miles at farthest) and so far far larger than even the earth. The diameter of the moon is 2,159 miles (3,475 km). The mothership is supposed to be about 600 km across, still huge though.

33:44 She went to his duty station/base El Toro, saw it was destroyed, so her and other survivors made camp there for the night. You ladies are to young to know what life was like pre-cellphone & pre-internet, but this is how we operated in the beforetime.😉 In my generation (and those before) it was drilled in us since childhood that if you get separated from your parents then go to the last location you saw them, hold position until they find you. Fire drills, bomb threats, and CBRN drills would establish a rally point where we would all come together for a head count & emergency services. In the absence of real-time communications you have to have a plan, or use your reasoning to come up with one on the fly.

God I always forget about shit like that when watching these old movies. I was 11 when this came out so I don't question that stuff because I REMEMBER living in those times, when even Caller ID was a new luxury that was a clunky BOX with a screen that hooked up between the wall and the phone. My dad owned a radio communications business back then so my family had beepers to get ahold of each other. My mom was super fancy because she had a dash-mounted CAR PHONE with the huge brick transmitter in the trunk, and it wasn't even cordless! It had one of those coiled phone cords connecting it to the holster. We didn't have a reliable dial-up internet source in my family's home until 1999 and I didn't get my first cell phone - one of the Nokia bricks with the one inch black and white screen and interchangeable faceplates - until my 16th birthday in September of 2000. But even then it didn't have texting because IT WAS TOO EXPENSIVE. If you didn't have a stupidly expensive unlimited texting plan, text messages cost 10-15¢ EACH with T9 input. Pop-out keyboards wouldn't become a standard thing until the mid-to-late '00s when I was in college. God we're getting old. 😂

Hacking an alien ship with a virus is such nonsense I couldn't bear it back then. I mean, a Mac virus doesn't work on Windows (in the slightest), yet in a few minutes he can whip up a virus to disable an alien mothership when he has no knowledge of their systems whatsoever, and not even a clue about the hardware to even deliver it. Atomic head smack there. The right idea was to just deliver the nuke immediately, then hope the satellite motherships would die.

It’s largely a research and development base, shrouded in secrecy… Not to be “that guy” , but might have been more accurate to say “is rumoured to have…” as opposed to “they are meant to have…” Personally I reckon that with the govs track record, IF there is any evidence of life beyond our planet, it would be there, but as there’s no concrete proof, to act as if it’s definite and any attempts to deny are further proof is a slope you don’t wanna slide down

Prior to FDR no other president served more than two terms; it was considered an informal tradition that a POTUS should not serve more than two, though theoretically they could. And there were a scant few that did attempt (unsuccessfully) to run for third terms, both consecutively and non-consecutively. In 1951, during Harry Truman's second term as POTUS (as FDR's Vice President he succeeded him when he died - serving nearly a full term, and won election for another term in 1948) we ratified the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution which limits a President to serving only two full terms, or one if they succeed to the presidency for more than 2 years. The text of the amendment allowed for a technical exception for Truman to perhaps run for a third term, but he didn't. Naturally of course there have been none since.

@@Mr.Ekshin I agree with you I like how they think. They make some interesting assumptions during movies too. Thanks for the cool reply.

The only good part of the sequel is Dr. Okun recovering from his coma and being a main character in the film throughout. Even that, however, is not enough for me to recommend the sequel to you.

Independence Day is one of the all time greatest films… period! From start to finish, it is simply amazing! Seen it easily over 100 times in my lifetime & I always feel like it’s the first time watching it again. Lovely reactions, ladies! PS: do NOT watch the sequel. Unfortunately it is nowhere near the quality of the original at all.

Yeah, if ol' Will had really come down like that for a _real_ jump? ... diagnosis: two busted ankles! In his next movie, he would've been filming from a wheelchair, or using a pair of crutches - plus regular doses of Tylenol-3!

Another great 90s movies. The best period, the atmosphere and charisma in movies in general was way different then. Now we have big production marvel movies with alot if CGI, which isn't sorry to say the same. I hope they get back soon to a more normal movie formula
