Dambovita is a watercourse in Romania, a tributary of the Argeș River.
The river has its source in the Făgăraș Mountains on the slope of the Curmătura Oticului mountain. The upper course from the springs to the confluence with Boarcășu is also known as Izvoru Oticului or Râul Oticu.
On its way to its discharge in Argeș, the river crosses several relief units: the Făgăraș Mountains, the Iezer-Păpușa Mountains, the Leaota Mountains, the Getic Subcarpathians and Curbură Subcarpathians, the Getic Plateau, the Târgoviște High Plain, the Titu Plain, the Bucharest Plain (see the Plain Romanian) and the Burnaz Plain.
On the river Dâmbovița there are 3 large dams in its course to the SE:
The first dam was built near the sources of the river (about 20 km away), in the mountainous area. The dam was designed to ensure the electricity needs of the communes around the town of Moeciu. The dam is called the Pecineagu Dam, and so is the lake.
The second dam was built in the high plain area (Târgovişte High Plain). It has the role of supplying the necessary water to the nearby irrigation canals.
The third dam is the one in Bucharest. The formed lake has the role of providing the largest amount of water needed by the capital's inhabitants. The lake also helps to prevent and stop flooding in the capital. The lake together with the weir are called Lacul Morii or Stăvilarur Ciurel and were built in the early 80s by the dictatorial regime.
