Alex Sneddon’s parents have always wanted the best for their son. From early on they helped him to create the kind of life he wanted.
Now the 24-year-old who lives with Down Syndrome is holding down four jobs and living an independent life.

The fact that the mother chose to give their home to her son to allow him to keep his routine in place is superb. Also, the addition of those flatmates was amazing. Kudos!

What an amazing young man he is. I have two older cousins my parents raise with DS. They are both so smart & full of life. We couldn't imagine a world without them. And when they are not around us, we are bored and somewhat miserable. I cannot seems to understand one bit why people discriminate against people with DS.

Not every DS person is sweet, agreeable and pleasant. Frequently, they are violent, angry and miserable. Sometimes, understandably so. Other times, it's just their nature. Alomst none of them will ever live on their own. This young man is an exceptionally high functioning DS adult. He can read. That's a very notable achievement. But let's not ignore that he couldn't do this without his parents, even though they don't live with him. The roommate situation is very unusual. Very few people randomly living together would do so with so much cooperation. I'm sure there was financial inducement. But what happens when his parents are gone? Will his siblings pick up? Is that fair? These are very privileged questions because some lower functioning DS adults will have no choice but to go into a group home or an institution. I dislike how these documentaries and DS families downplay the harsh realities of the disability.

He is proactive, and introspective. An upbeat, fun guy. And blest for Alex...because, many parents of Downs' kids infantilize their children in what is often a misguided but well-meant effort to somehow 'protect' them from the world. Alex lives IN the world - moreover, his parents have done a wonderful job of encouraging him - giving him tools and life skills to cope, and thrive. In a perfect world, theirs is the vision for what all Down's individuals should be!!

I started my first year in college just last year, but the pandemic made it challenging, so I've decided to start back next year in the 3d computer animation program, where I am in Canada. 🙆🏻‍♀️ I love how teachers believe in our abilities. I have 3 people in my life with down syndrome. It's incredible how it affects individuals differently. My cousin with it is perpetually stuck as an 8 year old. She's in her 40s and is always in complete parental supervision. My friends brother with it is pretty much completely independent and has been for decades. He's in his late 50s, has surpassed the doctors opinion on his life expectancy with his health issues and is quite an incredible person. The other was a childhood friend. He is the strongest person I've ever known. He was an olympic weight lifter and has zero doubt in his abilities. Quite inspirational.

What a fantastic young man who shows the world he is more than a label. I worked in the learning disability world for many years and have a special affinity with DS because I have some of the signs. Thanks to my mother growing up with a friend with DS I went to Grammar school, trained as a nurse and then as a mature student did my degree and then diploma in health and social care. In 2000 my grandson was born with cerebral palsy and epilepsy so I cared for him for most of his life of 9 years. Joe also had a very strong faith, we went to Lourdez twice and to see him there was just amazinv, leading the torchligjt processionn. Good luck to Alex and God bless him and his family.

What a great life he is living and leading for others wanting that for themselves. Amazing. What I really love most is listening to his mother. Naldi SooDiabolic SomethingMoreSinister - what do you mean when you say that if they are raised the right way they turn out just fine? His intelligence doesn't have much to do with how he's raised. It's more about the fact he's born mentally and physically disabled. Alex is very high functioning. Most adults with Down syndrome are not nearly as high functioning as Alex. But even as high functioning as Alex is, he is still a burden to society. He gets taxpayer funded nannies and babysitters and he receives financial assistance for living expenses since he doesn't have the intelligence needed to get a real job. You heard that his job was a charity position made just for him and had a babysitter help him sort mail since he didn't have the brainpower to do it himself at first. He is taking classes and working extremely hard just to be able to stay alive on his own if he didn't get nannies 24/7 to care for him. That's not something normal people have to spend decades taking classes on. As it stands now he's totally dependent on state funded nannies. In America, having DS guarantees you disability benefits for life, and in states like California, free nannies, free housing, free healthcare and free personal drivers to care for them 24/7, since the law recognizes that they don't have the intelligence to care for themselves. We as a society try to screen for and terminate these pregnancies before they become a burden to society and parents have to accept their child will never be independent enough to live on their own. And their intelligence maxes out at about the same as a 3-4yr old toddler. Most Down syndrome pregnancies are terminated at the recommendation of the medical profession. It saves people from a lifetime of severely limited abilities. Some European countries have eliminated DS from their populations by having a near 100% termination rate. Unfortunately the termination rate in the US is going down as parents are told not to worry, the government will have to pay for your disabled child their entire life so you don't have to carry the financial burden of having a 35 year old toddler. You can even make the government give them an apartment and pay a nanny to care for your adult child so you can have your life back. Unfortunately it places a heavy burden on society as the number of DS grows in the US sadly.

There are ALWAYS arrangements that can be made so they can be safe and happy in the event of family dying. It is a bit scarier and more complex making the right arrangements for someone needing a bit more help, but you'll get there! :)
