This was the start of commercial radio in the UK. 1973-76

Its a great shame that we don't have radio like this anymore instead of being one of 3 broadcasters. It was truly independent then, just like the TV instead of the generic junk we have now

i could happily agree with you all day about how ‘de regulation’ managed to crush individuality, imagination, localism , authenticity, spontaneity & how it just got worse & worse although the community stations are the closest as far as fm radio is concerned which I can think of. saying that , the new forests’ community station biting the dust after 6 months wasn’t exactly a surprise seeing as community here was eradicated by the same factors which ruined radio imho 🙄👍

I could tune into many of these stations here in the highlands of Scotland with a loop frame aerial with vernier dial.

Beacon Radio 303 - sounded like no other ILR station at that time, American owned & played West Coast music, Beacon introduced me to the likes of the Eagles, thanks Jay.

in 1977 i was 13 & apart from an old Dansette for playing the same records ,i relied on bbc radio 1 at 247 for entertainment but the station couldn’t stop playing Abba Saturday Night Fever Boney M & Leo & was sick of the repetition & to my surprise (perhaps to inheriting a better radio from my step mum which had better gain) just along the dial at 257 came the sound of an advert for Asda in Havant ( never heard of Asda but knew the town was sort of near Eastleigh) - then music by Eddie & The Hotrods , The Stranglers , Peter Gabriel , X Ray Spex & The Tubes to name a few although not in succession but at least fresh to my ears . this was a slightly fuzzy Radio Victory 24 miles east from the sw new forest where i lived but inspite of their editorial thing not extending beyond southampton water it played a top 40 based on local sales & had authentic presenters with tons of personality. Bill Padley even produced a programme just for Metal .The day it got to be replaced by the lame Ocean Sound when it’s 1st song was - “ I just called to say I love you “ i nearly died of disappointment & new we’d had it because the 5 yr old 2CR for our patch was already as shite 😁👍

I remember the LBC radio news jingle made it on a episode of The Sweeney entitled Selected Target towards the end when Regan switched it on in the car.

Prevue Minimax That'd be an arduous task, considering how many stations there are, lol. You'd have to confine it to the IBA era. Also, I can't seem to find high quality jingles for a lot of 'em. ;w;

Does anyone remember when frequencies started to be used instead of wavelengths (metres) to identify radio stations?

Around 1984-5, depending on your local station.

When the UK radio manufacturing industry collapsed. All imported radios were marked in kHz.

yes but by time the first 19 had ll launched they were in there rightful homes 194 and 261

The big city stations got 194 or 261 and every other station seemed to get what was left.

You would have thought that 194, 257 and 261 - plus several common FM frequencies - would interfere with each other - when I lived in Middlesbrough, BBC Radio Cleveland was on 194 and 96.6 VHF - in mono, for some weird reason - and Radio Tees was on 257 medium wave and 95 VHF in stereo! By autumn of 1983, Radio Cleveland realised that, in order to compete fairly with Radio Tees, they needed to be in stereo - who wants to hear any sort of music in mono? Two years later, they swapped FM frequencies with Radio Tees! By 1988, Radio Tees became TFM - even on medium wave - by the early 90s, they split the FM and medium wave frequencies and FM became TFM with medium wave merging with neighbouring Metro Radio to become Great North Radio, which became Magic by 2000 and something - then it, along with other stations, became (its FM equivalent) 2, but a pan-regional thing with local news, advertising and travel news, before becoming Greatest Hits Radio - as of January 2024, all those stations no longer exist! Even the 194 Radio Cleveland frequency, formerly occupied by Radio Cleveland, closed down altogether - they only went stereo following a move from above John Collier’s tailor’s shop to a huge complex which is the first thing that you see when approaching the town’s bus and coach station - as of a few years ago, it’s now BBC Radio Tees!

@@arthurvasey 194 & 261 were internationally cleared frequencies, so could be used at higher powers. Also sites in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Sheffield & Glasgow utilised multi-mast directional phased arrays that could null out the signal in the direction of a conflicting service.
