The new source menu allows you to chose which mode to be in. So it’s either cast mode or ninja mode. Meaning, you can only record 4K in ninja mode when connected to its own hdmi in, but the cast will not capture/work.

All channels regardless of video size 4K or whatnot… will get down samples to HD when using the Cast

I hope it becomes available, but for that to happen, the channels would have to be able to record Isolated. That’s would be an even greater feature 🥃🥃

Great walkthrough of the CAST, I really expected only having 8 buttons to be very limiting compared to the ATEM Mini but that doesn't seem to be the case. If Atomos is listening, let us record 4K from the HDMI input to the damn SSD with overlays and PIP from the CAST sources. It seems obvious, however maybe the hardware just isn't powerful enough to do that..

If they make ISO 4K recording available from the cast, it would probably be with the Ninja V+. Since that one can do 8K, but the current ninja V, already struggles with one 4k60p… But I do not see why can’t it record in program mode 4k. That’s should be available

4:16 this right here is the primary reason I'm super hesitant on buying this whole mess. If it had thunderbolt output and could do at least 4K 60fps HDR then it'd be worth it for me as a way to record two 1080p sources and maybe a camera or two If it could record 1080-4K(x4) but output 720p(x4) I could accept that, but what I want to use this for seems very different and honestly I don't know why this exists? It seems geared towards streamers which are mostly gamers so four sources to me is multiple gameplays and webcams like say if you're streaming a competitive game from four computers. 8K output so I could record multiple UHD 60fps is the dream but I dunno if 40gbps is enough data to do that.

Hi mate, Thanks for a great upload. It's very informative and presented in an easy-to-digest form. One question: Is there a way to remotely switch the casting source with a press of a button? I'm a planespotter who streams live outdoors a lot. At the moment, I've got Ninja mounted to the top of my camera rig, and I would love to have the ability to switch camera sources fixed to my tripod handle. Any thoughts? Many thanks Arek

Thanks for the complements… I believe the only other way to go about it if u are using h264 or log maybe. U can transfer your signal with wireless transmission and the receivers on the ninja. That way u can switch the cams as needed from far away. I believe Atomos has such transmitters. Good luck

Is it possible to just record ALL 4 CAMERAS SEPARATELY directly to one caddy? Or do I have to edit on the fly? Will there be 4 individual WAV. files? Thanks

You can only record the output feed. 4 cams in, only the monitor view gets recorded. Depending on your cam, u can record on the cam individually and in ninja as well, but only one feed will be on ninja.

Thanks for that detailed overview of the AtomX Cast. How serious is the issue of flexing between the unit and the Ninja causing restarts? Is it easy to avoid?

The flex issue can occur sometimes when the unit has been on for a while and you happen to do what I did in the vid.. flip it upside down or perhaps pick it up by the ninja in a fast manner. Otherwise, not an issue under normal use or clicking on buttons and using the touch screen. 🥃

I know the usb c output is limited to 29.97 but what about if you are recording to an internal ssd in the ninja and you want 24p. I have matching cameras outputting 24p to the atomx but it is only allowing 29.97 ssd recording. If i undock the ninja from the atomx i can record 24p prores easily

I tried selecting the slot and tap browse so i can replace the file but for some reason, once a file is been leaded, the browse button does not give you the option to reselect a diff file

Hmm, is H.265 usable with the AtomX Cast if purchased for the attached Ninja V?

If I’m not mistaken it was just made available with the last firmware update. But this option is only good if u already own it. Otherwise I much rather use ProRes LT, which will give better quality and the same compression as h265.

Hi, I am trying to figure out if the AtomX Cast can record 1080p ISO recordings or if it’s just the program out signal which is being recorded? It seems really hard to find this info 🫣. But maybe you know more. Also if any new firmware updates may have added this in the past few months?

Hi, I’m not sure about firmware to be honest… check Atomos website… As far as recording, it does not record. The AtomX Cast is a switch. It can record 1080p via the ninja V. Whatever input u select it will record in mp4. The switch itself can not record at all or function without the ninja V. Nor can it record raw or Log.

Hello Shabar… as long as your cameras have HdMi out of any type and can putout at least HD video, it will recognize it. The GoPro will only work if you turn it on after connecting everything. If you plug it in after the cast is turned on, there will be no signal…. Just turn off the GoPro and and back on, and also set it to live view. Monitor on back will not work while in this mode.

U can record any camera here in ProRes 422 thru the ninja itself. The quality of image depends on the camera capabilities, if it can put out 10bit 422, than it can record that. If it can’t then most likely you are limited to 8bit 420… The quality of image will increase maybe by 10% since the files will not be compress as internal recording at h265… Thru the cast, it can also record. But limited to Hd only.

Is it possible to format 4KI in the recording camera and at the same time connect to the switcher and record the video backup? Be happy and healthy

Raw can only be recorded on the ninja if your camera is capable of exporting the format. Usually when recording in raw the camera internal recording doesn’t work. You can use the switch to capture 1080p only. You can additionally record internally on your camera but only in log or 8bit, as that signal can still be captured by the cast. If you are using anything other than standard 8bit, I would not use log from different cameras unless all the cams are the same. You will have a hard time color grading the cams to match.

I really do not think u can add anything to it, other than the static overlays.. But if you run the cast as a switch and then run it thru your pc software like streamlabs you can do a lot more then the basics of the cast

Hi Edward, love the videos, I have a quick question regarding audio. I have the FX3 which can record 3 inputs of audio. If i Use the AtomX cast and select the FX3 HDMI as my audio source - will it put through all three channels to the livestream and recording or will it only select one of them. Essentially, if i have 3 speakers on stage, each with a wireless lav transmitting back to the FX3's inputs - will I get all three of their audio - or will the cast chose one? What is your audio workflow for when you need multiple audio sources?

Hello ShiteGeist, that’s a good question… Let me ask you this, I’m guessing by your question that u already have the ninja V. If so, when you use the ninja with your fx3 does it record 3 channels when recording directly to it?… if so, then I taking a while guess here that it will record your 3 audio channels just fine. Whatever the ninja can do normally, the cast can do but with all new specs and codec… like it will capture in 24bit audio and ProRes or dnxHD and in HD only… So I hope that helps… or if you somehow separate the audio output if your Fx3 and feed that directly to the mic/line in Of the ninja. That will work as well.

Do I have to downgrade my firmware to get this thing to work? I set up exactly as mentioned at the beginning and it's showing up as "invalid" under the AtomX tab.

Reset your ninja to factory settings and install firmware again. this time while attached to the cast, make sure it has a solid connection on the back side, I believe that’s where most of problems origin from. The pin Connectors are not the greatest.

Huh.. I could swear the connection was solid (used the little bracket), but yeah, gave it a little squeeze on the side with the little multi pin and that fixed it.

H265 is not available for recording when connected to the cast. The cast can only do ProRes and DNxHD. You can only do h265 if using the ninja input alone.

i have one question - Cast have USB-C up to 1080p30 but on 30P youtube live specially program like dance video show Jerk and not smooth. so can ATOMOS release some updates with 1080 60p ? or any workaround for me?

If the motion is too fast, that’s going to be an issue. What cam are you using?.. with progressive vid, it shouldn’t be as bad. The Cast is meant for live multi cam stream, if you want faster single cam, I believe the ElGato hdmi to usb device could be your solution.

Not sure what you mean… if you mean, can you program buttons to do more than what it already does… no. If there is something plugged in to the hdmi input it will read it, if empty it will be a blank screen. If you want to hide the menu and all onscreen buttons, just click the middle of the screen, and you will have a clean screen. Hoping one of those answered your question… 🥃

I BOUGHT THIS AND THE FIRMWARE HAD TO BE UPDATED BUT THE USB-C DOESNT WORK BOTH B&H AND ATOMOS SAYS IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED OR REPAIRED BUT SINCE IM STILL WITH IN MY RETURN PERIOD IM GETTING RID OF THIS AND LOOKING ELSE WHERE. THIS IS NOT A RELIABLE PRODUCT IT HAS LOTS OF ISSUE'S

If you had a faulty product, I can feel your frustration. But, No one had it worse than those who bought when it originally came out and couldn’t do anything about it. Otherwise, the CaSt works very nice when connected with proper firmware installed.
