The classic demonstration of making Pyrex glass (test tubes, stirring rods, beakers, tubing) disappear by submerging it into a variety of liquids, in this case cooking oil. This demonstration works best when the liquid is lit from the same direction as it is being viewed or lit from overhead lights, when the light source is behind the container of liquid it is easier to see the glassware "hidden" inside.

You have to use borosilicate glass. Newer Pyrex is a cheaper kind of glass and won't work, but nice glass beakers and such from a chemistry supply place should.

My son and I tried this, and it sadly didn't work. The fully submerged (and filled) test tube was completely visible in the corn oil. I assume now, that it didn't work because the test tubes I bought were only glass, and not "Pyrex" glass. Not sure where I can buy Pyrex test tubes locally, but before I go to the trouble, I wonder if you could weigh in on my assumption on why it didn't work. Thanks for all your great videos.

Hi Matt, you are correct, I tried several types of glass and found quite a fe of them didn't work, it should be pyrex

It must be borosilicate glass, not tempered. Proper lab equipment is borosilicate.

Baby oil or glycerin for glass
@ktkboys1481
@ktkboys1481 2 жыл бұрын
You can do that with small test tube. Glass road is a closed and air lesss medium .. so that what liquid (like oil, glycerin) you using for this the same liquid fill also into the small tube ...Now the small tube is air less and like pyrux glass road because your test tube and liquid in container have same refractive index .....That will be work properly......
