This rare 16mm film (somewhat historical in itself), was produced by the National Coal Board and shows the "King George V" locomotive No. 6000 being operated by dedicated professional railwaymen at Bulmer's siding in 1970. The locomotive's interesting history is detailed, including its trip to the "Fair of the Iron Horse" in 1927. As well, audio interviews with workers who proudly built steam locomotives at the Swindon Locomotive Works are heard. The locomotive is shown in full steam along Bulmer's siding, with and without some restored Pullman coaches. We also are shown glimpses of the locomotive "Cider Queen". The narrator laments the loss of steam on the main line, and looks forward to the day the locomotive can return to its true calling. This did happen a couple of years after this film was made, so we thank those people who had the foresight to preserve and restore her, and also to those who docemented her preservation for us to see. This film was restored by myself from a worn out and badly faded 16mm print.

Great film, As a young photographer I was assigned by the Hereford Times to take still photos of the making of this film. Most of the shots taken on the day I still have. Great memories

The first King Class loco I ever saw, used to run quite frequently in the 70's into Shrewsbury on the SLOA tours when my late father used to take me and my brother to see it, will always be my favourite King so sad to see it landlocked in a museum.

Good work on the restoration. I did visit the King while at Bulmers, sadly she wasn't in steam.

Excellent. I had not heard of this trip to the USA--only of the Duchess Class visit to the '1939 World Fair'. Hopefully one day, NRM will find the money to restore George the 5th health to full strength again.

Despite still retaining its original height and weight, and thus being limited in her operating territory, I agree on the restauration part. Get it done, NRM!!! And how about sending 6000 to the USA again for the 200th celebration of the Baltimor and Ohio railroad? She's been there before. Does that sound fitting or not? B)

Philip Croft Where and why did King George V get her bell? She needed a bell to run on US railroad tracks to comply with US law. The B&O were very nice to present her one, a beauty of a bell.

Just found this. Fantastic to have it on the web. My Father Bernard Staite was instrumental in KGV and the Return to Steam. Brought back so many childhood memories. My Father passed away in 2009 having made mainline steam his vocation. He managed Flying Scotsman in Australia in the 80's and was a lead in the SLOA. When he retired the railway ran the Staite Pullman in his honour. As KGV is unfortunately no longer active on the mainline and stuck in the NRM it fell to another King class engine King Edward 1 to assist in his life long wish to have his ashes placed in the firebox of a king running up Llanvihangel Bank en route to Hereford in August 2009. Thank you so much for restoring and up loading this footage. Jonathan Staite
