Both moder Hinduism and Islam in South Asia was institutionalized by the British in 18th century. There is no "thousands of years" here. The Upanishads are the highest authority on what Hinduism is. It doesn't mention the caste system we follow. Upanishads proclaim one God that is Brahman and all other life forms originated from Brahman and each life form has a part of Brahman in them called Atman. But due to ignorance the individuals are not able to realise this truth that they are part of Brahman.
