Sanatan Shastar Vidya is an ancient martial art, which has existed in northern India for thousands of years.
It was adopted by the Sikh warriors in the 17th Century and is considered a spiritual as well as a physical exercise.
Today a more modernised version is practiced, known as 'Gatka' - which predominantly involves stick fighting and tactical positioning. It is now popular as a sport or sword dance performance art.

In college I worked delivering pizzas. We had Sikh, Muslims, Jew, Hindus, Christians, Mormon and atheists all working together. We all used to joke that we were the U.N. of pizza delivery lol. We had a hell of a good time, mostly. Getting to know Sikhs and learning of the beauty of the culture, plus the food!, is something I am extremely thankful for. Great people.

Listed are some contradictions in Sikhism : It teaches the contradictory concepts of God being Sargun i.e. with attributes and also Nirgun -without attributes (p287; p102). It teaches reincarnation and yet the Guru Granth questions reincarnation(p748 M5; p1366 Kabir). It teaches the concept of hell (p465 M1; p524 M5; p793 Ravidass; p875 Ravidass; p1383 Farid; Asa Kabirji GGS p484). And yet says hell does not exist (p969 Kabir). And it also teaches the mutually exclusive concept of karma & transmigration. If you are born again and again to pay for the sins of previous lives, why the need for hell or heaven? (p686; p156; Rag Malhar M3; Rag Gauri M5) The Guru Granth says neither Hinduism nor Islam has the truth (p329 Kabir; p875 Namdev) and yet says that the opposite (contrary) is also true(p1350 Kabir).Guru Arjun Dev even validates the Vedas (p632 M5). And guru Govind Singh says Allah & Abhek (Ram) are the same and the Koran and Hindu scriptures are the same (Akal Ustat vs 16:86). It claims that there is only one way to God (p920 M3; p1279 M1) and yet the Guru Granth also teaches there are many ways to God (p885 M5.7. It teaches that all humans are children of God ( p1118 M4) yet also says, not all, but only those who love Him are His children (p658 Ravidass). The guru says that he is blind, ignorant and without enlightenment (p696 M4) yet he is called 'guru', which means one who leads from darkness to light. It teaches the existence of Heaven (p718 Namdev; p952 M3) yet the concept of Heaven is rejected(p969 Kabir). It teaches that the world is a dream, an illusion and not real (p740 M5; p1187 M9 p1231 M9)yet guru Nanak says it is real (p463 M1). Guru Arjun Dev claims that he was given supernatural powers (p782 M5) yet guru Nanak, admitted to the Siddh yogis that he performed no miracles(Bhai Gurdas // 1.42/43) The Guru Granth rejects the Vedas (p329 Kabir) yet Guru Arjun Dev validates the Vedas (p632 M5). He also quotes them as though an authority(p632 M5). Guru Nanak also quotes them as though an authority (p831 M1).The fourth guru does the same and quotes them as though an authority (p998 M4). Namdev quotes the Gita as though an authority (p874 Namdev). Ravidass quotes the sage Vyas as though an authority (p658 Ravidass). The Guru Granth says that everything was created by the agency of millions of Brahmas (p1156 M5). Yet the one God created everything ( p1 M1). Dhanna jat is said to have worshipped a stone and God appeared to him. Yet stone worshipping is condemned (p1160 Kabir). Guru Granth gives no account of the creation of man and in fact says the Semitic books are false (p329 Kabir). Yet itself validates the existence of Baba Adam (p1161 Kabir). 13. The Guru Granth teaches that God does not incarnate (p1136 M5) yet talks of the Nehklank Avatar (p1403 Swayyas). 14. The gurus never called themselves divine, but in fact sinners in need of salvation by the Grace of God. (p156 M1; p536 M5; p261 M5; M5 p1301). Yet Swayyas sing praises and laudations to them and make them divine (p1405 Swayyas; p1407 Swayyas; p1408 Swayyas; p1409 Swayyas). 15. It teaches monism i.e. all is one reality and God is all (p846 M5; p464 // M1; p1291 // Malar M1; p131 Majh M5. Yet says that man is not the same essence as God but only resembles Him (p754 Suhi M3).

@@Randomhandlename Your original argument had nothing to do with proving whether the translations youve listed were wrong. Your original argument was that you believed the verses and passages in the SGGS were contradictory (anyone reading this can search for your original comments in this video). For example in your original comment you mistakenly claimed that the SGGS first promoted the kingdom of heaven in one verse and then rejected it in other verses. In the case of your previous comment I attempt to clear up your misrepresentation as follows. You provided 4 passages that mention the word heaven, in which case you've automatically assumed that the SGGS is talking the literal interpretation of Heave as an abode or a place - the kingdom of Heaven? This defintion of heaven in the literal sense as it being a physical place is typically adopted by those who practice one of the Abrahamic religions (Christianity, Judaism or Islam). The concept of heaven being a heavenly place/abode/kingdom that you visit when you die isn't the defintiion adopted by Dharmic religions (like Sikhism). In Sikhism theres no belief in an afterlife that is heaven or hell that interpreted as a literal place your spirit visits - this is an abrahmic concept popularised by Christianity (the Biblical defintion) and Islam. The Saints of Sikhism reject this notion of Heaven and Hell as a physical concept that you visit beyond death, which is meant to be captured by verse P969 that you presented earlier. Where the word "Heaven" is utilised throughout the passages of the SGGS the meaning takes a completely different interpretation from what you belive or hold it to be due to your own religious ideologies or general beliefs. The mistake you've made is to force your interpretation or ideology of Heaven like a template on to the verses practised by Sikhism, which sadly doesnt fit. The interpretation of heaven according to Sikhism as representated by the first 3 verses you've listed isn't to denote a physical place that one goes to after death, but is the transendence of ones physical and mental being (think of it as an out of body experience) to a higher plane (closer to god), which happens while you are still alive purely through meditation by chanting gods name (Prayer of Naamdev). The Heaven interpreted by the SGGS isn't referring to the place visited beyond the afterlife (interpreted by Abrahamic religions) but is interpreted to mean an internal state of bliss, delight and peace that can be attained by any human being purely by chanting gods name, the inner spirit is moved closer to god through deliberate and sustained chanting and prayer on the name of god. This is a concept that I can image will be hard for you to understand or even acccept, especially if you measure heaven as phsyical abode that is inaccessible to the "non-believers" after death (a typically Christian or Islamic concept that is far removed from Sikhism, Hinduism or Buddhism). What you've done is cherry picked verses from the SGGS that make it strongly suggest that its referring to the heavenly abode beyond afterlife, which is false and a clear example of your misinterpretation of the verses. And this is the mistake you've made and continue to make with all the other pointers you've cherry picked - instead of reading the whole text (from start to finish - something you will never do) you've selectivley targeted verses and quotes from passages to help support your argument becuase you're fully aware that you can skew the actual interpretation this way since it will lack context as you have forced out the bigger picture(to put it another way you're deliberately missing the trees for the forest) Here are additional passages in the SGGS that strongly support and demonstrate the concept of heaven practiced in Sikhism that I just described to you above (Guru Arjan Dev.SGGS:1078) "Myriads of heavens do not equal the Lord's Name." (Guru Arjan Dev.SGGS:890) "Heaven is where the Naam is chanted. All bliss comes, when one obtains the Blessed Vision of the Lord" (SGGS:337) "Don't wish for a home in heaven, and don't be afraid to live in hell. Whatever will be will be, so don't get your hopes up in your mind." (Guru Arjan Dev.SGGS:251) "They do not seek wealth, and they do not desire paradise. They are immersed in the deep love of their Beloved, and the dust of the feet of the Holy."

They use a variety of combat styles- bare hands, sticks, daggers, swords, & Urumis or serpentine swords. But the most deadly tactics involve mind only. These are NOKKU MARMAM, which involves immobilizing or even killing the opponent by fixing gaze upon them. And CHOONDU MARMAM, which does the same by pointing your index finger, directing mind energy at them. Kalari Payattu also involves an elaborate system of medical practices, which identifies the pulse points in a body and applies medicine to those spots to cure diseases. Oil massages meant to make the body flexible, cure wounds and ailments sustained during martial arts practice and free the body of diseases ensuring overall health, is also part of Kalari Chikitsa or Kalari Therapy. It is believed that the Buddhist monk Bodhidharman, took this system of combat- meditation- medicine to other countries, where he propagated Buddhism, paving the way for the evolution of fighting systems like Karate and Shaolin. Kerala's traditional ballads, the THEKKAN PATTUKAL & VADAKKAN PATTUKAL are full of stories of men and women proficient in this ancient martial art form. And yes, the British outlawed this martial art, which drove it underground and then re emerged and regained popularity after independence.

Martial arts are as much art as cold combat skills to a culture. Look at it through this lens. By practicing these advanced techniques and exerting maneouvers, it's a type of physical conditioning and establishing muscle memory for fluid usage during battle. Like katas in karate or tae kwon do, the techniques are meaningless without ALREADY knowing how to fight. No one in the UFC fights with pure theoretical technique according to the martial arts they trained in, for example. Furthermore, in this era, combat occured in short bursts of contact and withdrawl, on repeat. No formation could be in continuous hand-to-hand combat for more than a few minutes at a time due simply to fatigue and the need to regroup formations. By having your warriors be especially ferocious and agile, you could rely on each short window of opportunity to intimidate and outperform your opponents.

British feared all the martial arts of India hence they banned all their practices, only one they let off was the Gurkha training because they didn't had much problems with them unlike the rest of the princely kingdoms and their forces, British found many martial groups such as Gurkas etc quite loyal and effective, they basically exploited their honourable nature in their advantage so to speak. I'm not saying they just did these only in India alone, the rest of the colonies lost their martial history to British as well.

These numbers were collated by the Rajya Sabha (2021) based on a question tabled for discussion. The data did not separate officers & Jawans in the Army & combined them together. The data focussed on Air Force & Naval Officers & recruitment challenges. Total Army Officers for all Indian States combined is 56k. The Army also has challenges recruiting Officers but not as bad as what the Air Force & Navy are facing. Hence the Rajya Sabha question. The Indian Armed Forces otherwise, does not do a state by state breakdown. So I dont know where these Canadian & Brieesh Khalistanis got their inflated numbers of 'Sikhs' serving in the Armed Forces. Initially, there were 35,000 of them in the army, but by the end of war, some 100,000 Sikhs had volunteered.” ‌Shipped overseas and led by British officers, the Sikhs served on the Western Front, including the Somme, but also in theatres such as Egypt, Mesopotamia and Turkey

Our own Indians hate us more than foreigners . When we see a video about kalari we appreciate their art , but when tamilians watch .. .these comments man . Just heart breaking. There is a keralite with name yahaya spreading hate towards sikh and these tamilians instead of stopping encourage him. On the other hands are our " brother" rajputs and cow belt area Hindus who just can't see a sikh martial art at display without jealousy or hate . Finally the Edgy western kids and New age British who don't even have a drop of knowledge about sikh martial arts and battles, even when their own British troops write about the horror and fear they faced in battle field with sikhs . Few Muslims ( Pakistanis too ) who just can't accept the fact the sikhs exist . Mughal bootlickers. On the opposite side is Our Sikhs who care and appreciate everyone's relehiosn and cultures , accepts everyone equally despot being small in numbers . Indeed everyone w hates us . Just disheartened to read the comment as a sikh.

There’s a massive difference in discipline through tradition and preservation of a martial art & being armed with modern weapons. Most Europeans have lost touch with their traditional fighting styles. Sikhs carry guns, don’t be ignorant lol

It is ceremonial today, back then it was as hardcore as today's MMA.
