Since the onset of the pandemic, the BJP government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pushed forward a whole host of reforms, including much-needed changes to India's farm laws. Farmer protests, however, have caused many to focus on the everything but the core components of these reforms and what they seek to achieve.
In this episode, Uzair spoke to Sadanand Dhume about India's economic reforms and what he calls Modinomics 2.0. Sadanand is a South Asia columnist for the Wall Street Journal and covers South Asia's political economy and business affairs. He has worked as a foreign correspondent for the Far Eastern Economic Review in India and Indonesia and was a Bernard Schwartz Fellow at the Asia Society in Washington, D.C.

Great podcast...loved it. One thing which I will like to add that his welfare policies approach has not ended in his second term. In fact, it has become more rigorous. In his first term, he focused on toilet construction, electricity connection, cooking gas, bank account opening, medical insurance, LED bulb distribution etc. In his second term, he is focusing on tap water connection (which is proving masterstroke), housing for all scheme, efficient public transportation in urban areas.

@AKumar-co7oe 3 жыл бұрын
Public transportation was pretty heavy in Modi 1 (where admittedly he was lucky due to metro rails started in congress era getting finished - but he scaled it up in a big way). He recently expanded a pilot of increasing Ayushman Bharat medical coverage to everyone - not just BPL - starting with Jammu and Kashmir.

the best podcast on indian economy.. totally agree with him. the west is showing these protest as if modi wants farmers to starve of hunger and as if he dont want to win elections again. i come from a farmer family too. support the reforms since day one. its sad to see this state of india where some people would not stand for any reforms because modi did it. also true is 50 percent people in agriculture does not make sense at all.like 2 percent people in america are in farming and have more farming land than india. yes RCEP was accepting defeat. its good to be true to oneself. people farming on farms smaller than home gardens and 5-7 cattle. and compete with markets where farmers in australia own 100 times the size of farms in india or 1000's of cattles. or cheap imports from china. its accepting that we cant compete with them now. but without these reforms we would never be able to compete with them. its good to see rich not being viewed in bad light. you need money to do welfare too . you cant distribute poverty and hunger as its a better equality process. let no one be rich. let everyone be equally poor.. lol

The big difference between Indian manufacturing ambitions and the Chinese manufacturing policy is that India primarily wants to attract manufacturing to satisfy internal demand and not, necessarily, to focus purely on exports. This explains why India is opting out of the various trade agreements. The bet here is that the Indian economy will become the third largest national economy in 5-10 years (4th if you count EU) and then it will be attractive for firms to manufacture in India just for the Indian consumers. In time, once the domestic manufacturing base is established, there may be scope to look at trade deals and exports. But meanwhile, the orientation of the Indian economy is a service led export growth with a focus on producing goods in the country to meet domestic demand.

So... Air India has been privatized now. Took more than 6 months since this podcast was published, but it's done. As for RCEP: literally no country opens itself up before it is ready to compete. U.S. was a high tariff and non-tariff barrier economy until about WW-II. Most of the East Asian tiger economies too were export-oriented. There is nothing that says India can't do it, even now, at this late hour. If anything, the Covid-19 pandemic related China- and Vietnam-centric supply chain anxieties have opened a good window of opportunity for India. And finally, India has announced a production-linked incentive in the clothing manufacturing sector too. Even bigger, and I'm surprised Sadanand didn't mention this (although knowing his politics, I know why), but BJP has been clearing the way for more private sector involvement in defense and space sectors. And there is more big bang reforms to come in banking/finance-- starting with more Rupee denominated debt market being opened up for foreign investors. As for the social issues: Ayodhya to sirf jhanki , Kashi Mathura baaki hai. If anything, BJP and Modi have been too soft on Hindutva and are going to be taken to task if they're not careful. The project of unifying Hindus as a bloc after the secular project of dividing them on caste lines is continuing for BJP even if it seems to be flagging and will need renewed impetus. BJP's biggest voters are the lowest classes and castes, and likely many Muslim women too who were happy with finally getting freed from Triple Talaq (which you forgot to mention completely... oops!).

The sad truth about India is people believe what they want to. Even educated Indians will rarely take the pain to understand issues before choosing sides. Many people opposed Farm Bills because it was brought in by Modi, not because they really understand the policy decision. It's a good thing that you now see it for what it is, but the fact that you had to hear it on a Pakistani Podcast to be able to see through all the narrative should help you understand how biased the media is even on the other side.

@@MB-xn2xq Yeah. Polarisation has happened around the world primarily because the world is changing too fast and people find it difficult to adjust and internet has lead to clashes of narratives which were before isolated from each other. "We were once known as argumentative Indians - people who talk things out." - We will get back to that again as things stabilise and trust levels increases. " I realized there is anti-Modi fake news along with pro-Modi fake news. Both BJP & INC's agenda is political power and idealogical power." - Exactly. Which is why I read policy papers to understand India's problems and suggested solutions BEFORE they become a political issue. That way I am not biased by the new outlets trying to push their agenda. Farm Reforms' converage was a litmus test for news media . I had understood them 3 years back and when the reform happened and News Channels started covering the protest, I could see NDTV, The Wire, Scroll, Quint etc lying through their teeth. I saw how biased they are. Exactly like the other side for whom Modi is a God incarnate.

@@MB-xn2xq And What AAP's opposition to Farm Reforms told me is that they are also the same. The Farm Reforms would help solve Delhi's pollution problem BUT Kejriwal would rather play the Odd-Even Game trying to fool the public into thinking that he cares, all the while opposing the reforms which would actually solve the issue. Why? .. Cause he wants to win elections in Punjab in 2022. :-) Also, I found the Irony in Kunal Kamra concern for farmer suicides but opposing the Reforms which would stop it.
