India, a nation on the verge of becoming a superpower? The country has overtaken China and is now the world’s most populous nation. The average age is 28. What dreams and what opportunities for advancement does this generation in India have today?
The median age in India is just over 28 years. That’s very young in global comparison, especially with western industrialized nations. How do young Indians, who are exactly 28 years old in 2024, experience their country?
A nation that’s often referred to as the world’s largest democracy, but where rising Hindu nationalism under Prime Minister Narendra Modi is resulting in repression and sometimes violence against Muslims. A nation where economic growth surpassed that of China in 2023; one with designs on becoming one of the world’s most important global players, both economically and politically. A nation of contrasts: Alongside up-and-coming startups launching groundbreaking business ideas, it’s estimated that one in every five people in India can neither read nor write. There are few countries in the world where the gap between rich and poor is so wide, where hunger and luxury are present cheek by jowl. At the same time, advancement opportunities continue to be determined by an officially obsolete system of social castes.
The documentary observes 28-year-old Indians as they go about their everyday lives. Some live in poverty in rural areas, others work in one of the many startups in urban centers. Some are members of the Dalit caste, also known as the untouchables, still marginalized in India today and often only able to find jobs that no one else wants to do. The film profiles Hindus and Muslims, an illiterate woman fighting for a future for her children, a businessman with a life full of luxury. What are their dreams; what prevents them from realizing them? And as India strives to become a new superpower, will it take all its citizens along for the ride?
Parliamentary elections are taking place in India from April to May 2024. Will Narendra Modi and his Hindu nationalist BJP party continue at the helm of the country?

I have lived in Canada for 18 years and returned in the middle of pandemic to live in India (Punjab), I can confirm I have a much better life, living among people who show real emotions,humility & A genuine sense of freedom.

I am an Indian sitting in UK right now. Studying here and thinking how I have to save up money to buy a laptop get job etc. I read a lot about the world, but somehwre I feel I am disconnected to this starta of society. I though knowledge comes from, and it does, but only to an extent. I will never understand the pains a poor from Bihar would face, how he sees the country, the society etc. It's easy for people like me in India to debate politics over coffee with other students but how can any theoretical framework can enable me to understand their point of view I do not know. My country dreams of super power while having a majority of population earning less than 100 pounds in a month. This is just such a weird feeling.

India is no where near to become superpower. The main point which you mentioned that majority earns less than 100 pounds a month is one of the main reason. Income inequality is huge. There are super rich in India yes but the GDP per capita in India is stillike that of 3rd world country

Everyone benefits when a society is more equal nor just in once sense but in more like gender & income. In the nordic countries the inequality in different matters are smaller. Everyone has the same school system no matter your income it's RARE to not have your kids go to public schools, that are free for everyone. Even uni is free. You only pay for your literature and today with Internet & most having a computer or phone, that's not longer the same issue.. And many off them is considered to be on top off the world in many things. As the best countries to live in, how common corruption is, levels off pollution etc. The rich tend to forget this & isolating themselves in their bubble - gated communities..

I am from region Bihar, and let me tell you this portrayal of poverty in Bihar is not realistic. While I agree Bihar is one of the poorest state, yet the the line "Nothing has changed here in last few decades" is NOT correct. On the contrary, the condition has vastly improved only in last 2 decades, in the 90's you would barely see a concrete house in most of the villages, the roads were non-existent, no electricity, no medical facilities but now the situation has changed. By and large my generation is the last one which has used kerosene oil lamps for studying even though I lived in a town. While you journalists come with a different perspective and European standards of poverty, we compare our own past with the present which is a more dignified way to assess our progress. How many of you know that in 80-90s, before India adopted liberalization, more than 50% of Indians were below the poverty line, the figure is now less than 10%. I have studied in government school for free, I remember all my friends were poor from today's standard, and none of them can be called poor anymore. All of them have jobs, businesses etc. Even today education is free in government run schools and kindergartens, they are supposed to provide nutritious food, books, school uniforms etc, although education quality has hampered due to various reasons including political instability. Poverty can be eliminated within next 10 years with the help of existing welfare schemes given that these are implemented honestly, their own elected representative at the village level has the responsibility to implement the welfare programs, but most of them are involved in corruption. Too much power lies in the hand of undeserving but democratically elected local politicians. Modi has been successful in sending the benefits of welfare programs to the real beneficiaries by using technology for reducing leakage, that is one of the reason he has been winning.

I am also from Bihar born in year 1991. My village got electricity in year 2014. For better life and mostly for my future my family migrated to Delhi in 1999. Father worked in a security agency at Rs 5000/- per month and mother at a local school at Rs 1000/- per month. Almost after a decade as new opportunities arose my parents returned to Bihar one by one. First my mother (for mere Rs 6000 job) in 2007 and then after another decade my father in 2018. I completed my education outside of Bihar. Got job after years of struggle while also keeping up with my education. In Bihar my parents salary rose significantly with time. Today if I compare my family's income to that of 1999, it has increased manifold. We now own a house in small town in Bihar and also two two-wheelers. We don't own any extra ordinary amount of wealth but there is significant change in our day to day lifestyle. I know it is not the story of every family of Bihar but documentary talked about anecdotal stories, so I also wrote my own experience for reader's benefit. In my family, we were not anyway extraordinary talented neither we had any kind of backing or resources. We were also not coming from any developed part of the land either (as I've alteady stated my village got electricity in 2014) but still we got economically stronger decade by decade. If in the hind sight I analyse perhaps our biggest strength was not our hard work or education. But the mobility, adaptability and unity. MobilIty, as we kept moving from one place to another for better job and education. Adaptability, because we used those places and situations to better ourselves. Our family remained close knit despite being distant for most of this period thanks to mobile and respect for each other's sacrifices which we carried in our heart, perhaps me being the only child also helped.

DW i am no "male feminist" but i got into a discussion with Indian expats from the UK and Singapore n found that we are in agreement: there are some really basic things that is holding back India being a superpower! I once read a report from an Indian news network that quoted a policeman telling victims of rape to marry their rapist! I simply cannot fathom how a lawman can say such things - its insane! the few simple things that India needs to fix are #1 Women's welfare and safety #2 Laws against discrimination due to religion n sexuality. caste discrimination as you reported was done but what is the use if there is no enforcement? #3 Free basic education?

Great documentary. It really does break my heart to see what others in the poorest parts of the world have to endure. It's not fair. There's plenty of wealth in the world for everyone. There is no reason any one person DESERVES to have most of the world's wealth. Born into it or not, that money should be shared. NOBODY should be living in filth without the comfort of today's technologies. It's really humbling, and people shouldn't complain about not "making enough money," if they have a decent roof over their heads, 3 meals a day, AC, a car, a cell phone, etc.

Its Common sense. south wasn't invaded, North was plundered by Islamic Invaders like Turks, Arabs and Mughals. So North India remains Poor and Backward because it had to start over from nothing. South is also more prosperois because it has accesd to Sea and Ocean, Making trade profitable, It avoided most of Brutal Islamic Invasions. It wasn't always that way. Idnia was intentionally made poor by Islamci Invaders, Who find no mention in History. (Becuse the Leftists beleive it is offensive to Indian Muslims to even discuss how Islam was a curse to India, Perhaops it still is).

@@hindurashtra63 Huh? I dont know which history you Sanghis read. South was ruled by multiple Muslim dynasties as well. Only difference was that, these kings (Both Hindu and Muslim) gave importance to education of their people. And almost every religion flourished under Maratha and Nizam and Mysore's rule. While unfortunately, the North was embroiled in religious and caste strife for decades after independence. But I am seeing change in North as well. Now, people are questioning their representatives. I am hopeful about the North. But Bihar and UP have a long way to cover.

It's not a pressure to live close to an extended family. Many don't. It's more of an Asian things. Even Indians living abroad try to get their family together. I wouldn't put it in a negative necessarily. Having a good family support structure is good for mental health. You guys can solve the housing crisis if you stopped stigmatising living with family.

Poverty in India has two meanings. Before the invasion and occupation by the foreign countries: by the Portuguese from the 16th century to mid 20th century, by muslim from 12th century till the British took over India in the beginning of 17th century till India became independent in 1947, poverty of India was mainly spiritual. Material poverty started after invasion and occupation. It is true that present-day poverty is very stark. But the good news is that India's development is positive despite various himalayan problems. India is still together despite many languages and dilects and cutoms & traditions. India has shown proficiency in modern science & technology. The general public is smart and intelligent. It is a very complicated chess game in the matter of governing India domestically and internationally. Some questions arise why India is a member of BRICS CLUB, where some members have very bad human rights issues, among other problems that would not be allowed in democratic India. It is true that India had problems with the West since the beginning of her independence. Russia was a great friend. But time has changed. I am certain India has to play a very tactful diplomacy in cases of Ukrain war and China. Moreover, from the Ukrain war, it is now evident that the Russian ammunition is not up to the mark. India must invest in highly technical and electronically operated armaments, space technology, and AI in defence against her adversaries. The positive point is that India is developing and, at the same time, tackling the poverty problem. Best of luck to India/Bharat.

If India is truly willing to improve the lives of their population it's mandatory free education up until college age so people are literate and can contribute to society more than agriculture or popping out kids. Having an educated work force is what propelled China to no.2 economy not just a large population.

My best friend in America came from India at age 10. His father had a masters in electrical engineering. 1973. He argued from 1973 to 1979 that there was no caste system in India. That it was illegal. In 2024, I’m going “riiiiiiiight.” He got a masters in electrical engineering and was a company president. Me, mechanical engineering the two masters and a PhD in psychology.

@@RR-pc7yv It's a social hierarchical system that has existed in India for thousands of years. The problem with the caste (jati as it's known in India) system is that a person born into particular caste was assigned a particular job. People born into higher castes gets all the well paid jobs and people born into the lower castes gets all the low paid jobs. Caste discrimination was criminalized after India became an independent country. But the ground reality is that caste is still prevalent in the minds of many Indians. The manusmriti an ancient Hindu legal text dictates that a person born into a particular caste must remain in that caste. This literally means that the rich upper caste people will remain rich and the poor lower caste people will remain poor even if they have the ability to excel in life. The lower caste person will be prevented from getting a job reserved for the elite caste. Indians has definitely progressed over the last couple of decades in overcoming these societal malpractices but still there is a long way to go. In my opinion the caste system must be abolished.

Well captured documentary, this is totally different from lavish and luxury life. You can find hope in each and every person with a shattered dream. They all are not able to reach that level to get government benefit because they don't have any resource and all of these capturing him due to poverty. You can tag them remote area. Low purchasing power comes due to poverty, and it is getting day by day worse. No one is addressing these issues. I hope all of these remote area people will also be able to connect from mainstream life. Our media has the responsibility to show this issue in their channel.

I've lived in 9 countries, including 3 in Africa. Africa is very close to my heart, and I support their efforts. However, your knowledge of history, geopolitics, and economics renders your opinion rather useless. The good thing is in your lifetime, you will see a glimpse of what India once was in terms of economy. The downside is your ability to process data might keep you ignorant.

@lskv222 Rwanda, Botswana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, all are making good progress. However, to take a quote from Bob Marley, they have not "emancipated themselves from mental slavery." The first thing the colonisers do, in order to take control of a place, is take away your gods. Until Africa returns to its own spiritual thoughts it will be very hard.

During Covid, India was not a super power but a super friend to Africa providing vaccines for free while the rich west hoarded 9 doses per resident. Now, India is building an IIT in Zanzibar, and discussing with South Africa to set up a vaccine factory. It is very hard for materially focused westerners to understand this non-acquisitive behaviour. We don't give a crap about being a super power - we come from a different spiritual tradition than you and we have different values. Africans and people of the global south can understand us better. By the way, how long is your historical memory? You do know that India and China were 50% of the world's economy before you guys showed up and became rich off our wealth and lands?

Africans are their own worst enemy, but being manipulated by their new colonizers from Asia to blame former colonizers for their poor choice of corrupted leadership, military juntas and dictators. I don't know why people are talking about education is India is not sufficient . it's upto the person, education is free in India if the person wants to study they will if they don't they will end up like this . Government is doing good for low income people they even give study equipments like laptop study table for free . I even heard students of Tamil Nadu gets even free bicycles from school. Textbooks and School lunch are free for everyone in all over India. So these are not sufficient for people to study . I think this is enough for a normal person to study

one of the point that India is poor because, western countries like Germany and its friendly nations buy medicines, raw materials at 1/10th the market price from India and sell in their own countries for profit and gain tremendous benefit. There is huge loss of revenue to indian subcontinent making it unmatchable to european standards. You are mentioning that national average income in India, please also mention how much basic vitamins and antibiotics cost in India and compare that with German market prices. Then I will appreciate your true comparison and you are not biased western journalist.
