In the UK we had a late but very harsh lockdown. We have also had lockdowns for the past 6 months. Even though we know the effects of the virus and know it is not as bad as what we first thought the UK gov have persisted with lockdowns. I wonder what Nassim's thoughts are on over pre-cautionary approaches when we already have the relevant information.

Some people are commenting foolishly stating Lock down last year was too harsh, lot of people lost livelihood..govt didn't think properly etc..in hindsight all these loose comments are easy to make. Let's be honest, back in Feb-March 2020 the entire world including the medical fraternity had zero clue as to the overall nature of this virus and it's effect on human lives. Had the govt, didn't enforce that harsh crackdown last year, India would have gone the way of Brazil, Italy and our Health Infrastructure would have collapsed completely. The cost to redevelop that damage will run into few billions and many many years of lost Human Resources. Secondly, economy is something not that easy to handle even for most developed nations like US, UK, Germany..it's a very delicate realm requiring constant tinkering of monetary policies, fiscal stimulus..even the best economists only hope that their policy advise works in a nations favour.

India did good COVID management. The best way could have been an "ordered mechanism of lockdown". They mistakenly took lockdown as Curfew, and due to this, all people had to go and buy vegetables exactly at the same time duration, thus, generating the "covid transmission risk way higher( the extreme multiplier effect, especially for the size of Indian urban population density)" and "covid virus is an aerosol (suspended particle floating in the air for longer duration, due to less influence of gravity for the virus particles to fall back on the ground, so gets inhaled by other people in the vicinity of the covid infected persons) and the propagation from person to person accelerated instead of decelerating it. People came together and respected the guidance from the government, and became the pandemic manageable. Being a statistician myself, I advised people to double-mask(in March 2020, now in US and Europe they are talking about it), because 1st mask only cuts 95% virus spread, the 2nd mask cuts the remaining 95% of the 5%survived from the 1st mask, and it is only per second, the longer time one is exposed , it is becoming a cumulative probability distribution of extreme nature, is still a risk. One factor helped India is, the virus survivability above 70 degrees Fahrenheit(22 Centigrade) is very less, and mostly India has day time temperatures above 22 C allover, so the spread was not that deadly.

I found that I generally agree with the thinking of Sanyal and this taleb guy (especially liked talebs thinking on entrepreneurship) but don't agree with Sanyal or taleb when it came to the lockdown. I do feel that the lockdown was extremely inhuman and that a principal economic adviser doesn't have the right to shut down the country so drastically and disrupt lives so violently, however strong you feel about the diseases bad effects. I'm not against certain restrictions such as limiting indoor capacity or banning concerts. Those are def justifiable. But I really felt that it was sheer stupidity to lockdown the country in 4 hours behaving as if he owned the country. That's a major issue with this line of complexity thinking. Of course people not moving around will kill the virus but one needs to understand that livelihoods aren't variables that one can toy with. Bottom line: ofcourse lockdown is perfect when viewed from virus infections alone but falls apart when basic humanity come into picture (even leaving the economics aside). It's unsurprising that both these dudes are/were bankers ........ As a free Market Economics believer bankers are the ones I'm most sceptical of....

Also, what do you make of the government’s response to the current crisis? While a lot of people may be howling for a nationwide lockdown, I think the right decision has been taken to enact “micro-lockdowns” and essentially let the market adjust itself around the virus.
@pmkrock
@pmkrock 3 жыл бұрын
@@oruspicarous1112 Although controversial, I still don't think the current lockdowns are the right step. They are elitist, and don't serve much purpose in reducing the spread since people naturally adjust around a crisis such as Corona by isolating themselves. The problem with the mindset of the current Indian leadership is that they believe the citizenry are a bunch of idiots and won't adhere to social distancing norms. That is highly incorrect, as people naturally will social distance when aware of such a magnitude or when there is right messaging from the government. Those who choose not to distance or go to work, only do so due to CIRCUMSTANCE and not CHOICE (read: the poor and the urban migrant labor, the latter who don't really vote as they are registered in the villages, and hence politicians don't really give a shit about them.. ). Plus, far too many people in our country believe that they know "better" for the general public than the public knows for itself. Case in point: There is a lockdown in Bangalore, currently, but I don't understand why there can't be free movement of people or public transport can be kept open for those who need it? Again, the line of thinking is that people will congregate/loiter around. BUT, given the magnitude of the crisis, very very few will actually indulge in such behaviour, correct? People are SHIT scared of the virus, and are only venturing out if absolutely necessary, and only for buying groceries, meds etc. People don't need the cops to police them back home.. Thus, why disallow the fundamental rights of a person to move around freely if required? Essentially, the whole point of my tirade is to say that often problems such are these should be looked at first principles of freedom, equality and fundamental rights. Economics come second, and follows automatically from freedom. Anyway, from an economic standpoint, a decentralized approach to handling COVID was always correct. If you look at China, the only place that got "locked down" entirely was Wuhan. There were other localized lockdowns in particulares areas, such as a part of Beijing in June. My ex-girlfriend was from China, and she mentioned to me that her parents were living in Chengdu/Beijing, and that transit never shut down in these Chinese cities, and nor was freedom of movement restricted. Yes, a lot of industries were shut down in other chinese cities such as tourism, manufacturing but it's ironic that the Indian lockdown in 2020 was far more brutal than the Chinese one.. Governments around the world ALWAYS had the Chinese example of approaching the lockdown (should you want to do it). But... China is an effective dictatorship, and one cannot simply think of replicating their models as is. But certain "restrictions" can obviously be encouraged to stop the spread. I stringently stand for restricting high-crowding activities such as concerts, rallies, religious functions etc., but would never stop other economic activities such as socially distanced dining, manufacturing, construction etc. People make this silly argument about "lives v/s livelihoods." In a poor country like India with a very poor social security welfare system, lockdowns are simply unaffordable as often, the question of "livelihood" is actually a question of a "life." The unintended "hidden" issues of the lockdown are often never measured.. if an agricultural or construction worker loses his "livelihood" in 2020, his lifespan could reduce by a few years for himself and his family.... the ones who are dying are anyway people majorly 60+.... and who would perhaps not live longer than 70 anyway.. (given India's life expactancy of 68 years)... so sometimes it's worth doing a calculation of how many "years of llfe" one can save...

@@pmkrock thank you for sharing your thoughts and I largely agree with you. Sadly such solutions are not politically tenable given that Indians expect their government to look at them in a paternalistic manner, and will throw tantrums when they’re told to learn some independence. I’d like to disagree on the notion that it doesn’t matter if older people die, for they’re our grandparents/parents. Having said that, corralling the resources required to take care of this demographic (not that hard in India compared to Western nations given demographics) by getting displaced workers to fetch them groceries and other essentials would’ve been cheaper than enacting an economy-wide lockdown on 18% of the world’s population, not to mention it would’ve bolstered national unity. At least to me, this pandemic has been about consolidation. Consolidation of wealth and power to be precise.

Just as it is important for a successful society to allow the possibility of individual failures, it is equally important for a successful society to disallow ‘separateness’ and compartmentalization in society. Imagine what would have happened to the U S if slavery was allowed to continue. For this reason, it is essential for India to establish a uniform civil code, and gradually exclude high-income scheduled caste applicants from competing for public sector jobs reserved other scheduled caste candidates.

Looking at what’s happening now, I think the correct decision was taken last year keeping in mind the state of the Indian healthcare system. But yes, as per Bloomberg there was a 31% reduction in the size of the Indian middle class due to lockdown in 2020. The middle class size is now probably around 10% smaller but this is still really significant so I do agree with the premise of your comment.

I also don’t like modi.... but bcoz of poor opposition he is going to stay next terms also that’s inevitable.... but Iam feeling positive abt last 3 months how govt is pushing infra and capitalism .... either we like it or not next 8yrs I see it’s bjp govt.... oly thing we have to think is what we can do to this country... Iam feeling positive abt it next 12 months things wl turn around .... anyway 2024 when govt goto elections we wl be clear where we r headed let’s see

Its not govt's responsibility to get you jobs. There is a shortage of skilled laborers in India, but everyone wants to have a govt job and get a fat belly or get a green card and move to US. Its people's responsibility to find their career and purpose

5 minutes of listening to sandal and am bailing. Hes actually justifying the stupid 4 hour lockdown. And thinks a stimulus package wasn't worth it. Which world does he live in? Is he aware of how other countries were more successful?

@@uj256 it's a single digit, not 10%. Whats your source? And when in crisis, most countries dont our bout deficits.... give money and Kickstart the demand side. The so called 30 lac crore stimulus was a joke.
