In diplomacy, 'knee jerk' reaction has to be avoided. But firmness of reaction has to be disguised with soft words. Modiji is doing that. Macron has accepted Modiji's invitation to be the Chief Guest on India's Republic Day. India may use his presence in Delhi to accelerate the deal on manufacturing Jet Engines in India. France is willing to transfer technology. USA is less willing. So, India may 'go slow' on deals and purchases of US made military ware. USA and Canada are relying on 'Five Eyes' evidence - the result of their snooping on a chat between an Indian diplomat in Canada and New Delhi. They want India to know that they are 'keeping an eye' on India!! They don't have the evidence that Nikhil Gupta was acting on the orders of an Indian govt., official. They will never get that evidence. So, the Court case against Gu[ta may or may not succeed. But both USA and Canada know that if Gupta is jailed in the USA, India will not forget that in a hurry. Relations will suffer at a time when the USA and Canada are on the decline but India is up and up. One never knows, China may decide to improve relations with India, once Xi Jinping is replaced by another leader. World of International relations is not static. India has options, may have more options in the near term future.
