The key objective of US India engagement is to disprove Chinese exceptionalism. If by 2047, India can bridge the 5x gap to say 2x gap, it will prove that US support played a critical part is rise of China. Indirectly proving US exceptionalism of providing growth opportunities.

good analysis except i don't think it's the key objective but rather a secondary one. The key objective is to raise costs of any Chinese misadventure by creating strategic ambiguity around India's response to any potential conflict. If businesses move to India in a big way it will reaffirm the US dominance around global capital allocation

@@apoorvchauhan6258 It's already working better than I expected it to work. It's been what 2 years since the galwan clashes and India declared full economic warfare against China and America ramped up the heat? smartphones (mostly iPhones) are already in our top 5 exports by value and western media narrative shaping is at its peak - semiconductor plants are coming up, and we might get getting jet engine manufacturing now. It's up to us to capitalize on the opportunity - there are plenty of other countries with the drive to take on manufacturing from china.

Thank you for a riveting podcast. You might want to read, N C Bipindra's, 'Mapping Chinese Footprints & Influence Operations in India' that tells readers how China spent billions of dollars to buy support for itself from among India's entertainment industry, academia, think tanks, media, trade bodies, tech companies and political parties and twist public opinion within the country to destabilise it from within. Although, US-India relationship is predicated on notions that both countries are democracies and share common threat perceptions, the belief is suspect because the US, through non-state actors is believed to be abetting issues and fomenting unrest in the run-up to the general elections slated for 2024.

If one has to choose, my view is that Indians are more sceptical of the US rather than anti-American. The US is viewed more as an unreliable partner, to the extent of being openly hostile in the past. We have been sanctioned, threatened with the 7th fleet; while they supported dictatorships against India. They have also taken their eyes off the ball; switched goalposts midway and continue to do so regularly. Attacking Afghanistan while the war in Iraq was ongoing, and now focusing on pounding Russia into the ground instead of tackling China. Then dumpling Afghanistan and handing over $80 Billion worth of US arms to the Taliban; which now has the potential to destabilise and rekindle cross border terrorism across the region.

Tanvi has explained the various scenarios with great insight. India, US relationships with China need to be defined in the context of circumstances of trade and military imperatives. The current trade is of such magnitude that it unwittingly underwrites China's growth in adventurism. India and US need to develop procedures manuals for trade and military cooperation vis a vis the Chinese behaviour.

The cynicism towards Amazon in India is because WaPo, which is owned by Amazon, is decidedly anti-India in its editorial leanings. The minister was simply sending a message to Amazon thst two can play at a game. Don't think any policy decisions were taken that would be adverse to Amazon.

I don’t think India has any incentive to alleviate issues faced by countries because of Chinese Debt. Because let’s be honest it just means cheaper debt from the traditional lenders for India. And going by growth figures currently ₹1 spent in infrastructure in India is yielding growth that is more than ₹1 faster than ever. India is one of the fastest growing large economies.. if not the fastest. So more the Chinese drag their feet on renegotiating debts with other lenders involved more is the space for India to raise money cheaply and grow itself quicker. India should only focus on alleviating such concerns for its regional partners. Which it has successfully WRT Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

India need not act as substitute for China as lender, we can act as facilitator. Japan gives infra loans at almost zero interest with technical know how and lesser string attached. We can be lender once we are sound economically

Uzair did good to let her be descriptive & without any jutt ins. Tanvi did touch upon the various nuances even in the skepticism with which US is looked at in India. I would say Indians are (rightly) more skeptically admiring of the US.. than being admiringly skeptical. Tanvi was to the point, professional & her scholarship showed.. but she also comes across as an 'influencer' on US' part.. being careful with words if US had to be criticised & not so much if India was to be dismissed. We see her inputs as important insights, but not sufficient & definitely not a complete picture. The Indo-US "partnership" .. at least we see it that way from our side.. is gonna be unprecendentedly wide berthed & deep (if it maaterialises). However, US is working double shifts to ensure it does not have to sign commitments with the current regime in India.. & try & install a more pliable Congress regime in 2024. It'll be a cat & mouse game until then. Modi's impending visit, I don't think will produce more than a few defence equipment deals & probably one show piece item deal. The "partnership", if it happens, w/o only take shape post 2024. The partnership, if it materialises.. could become another US-Israel one (yeah, all other things considered) .. or, at minimum, a US-South Korea one. Forget about the politics Uzair .. Did anyone tell you you look like Shikhar Dhawan's twin .. & sound & talk exactly like him .. with exactly the same body language. Haridwar ke mele mein bichhade 2 bhai.. haha.

Tanvi Madan is basically batting for India's loss of strategic autonomy to America and actually saying it's good for India it's a necessity for India. She is also wondering what is wrong with that :O :O This is the level of her intellect. And by the way whatever you say of our governments and India's China problem but India isn't going to give up her independence and sovereignty. Also her assumption of India's coming for Taiwan's rescue(or US's side for Taiwan issue) is cute; a region which itself doesn't count herself as a country and call herself CHINA. :D :D

Anti-Americanism in India is a BIG problem for me. Not so much the anti-Americanism of many Indians, but the fact that Modi and the government of India does NOTHING to counter it. NO Indian official EVER says anti-American statements are wrong. NO Indian official EVER defends the United States. In fact, Indian officials will often pile on and make false and ignorant claims against the US. I have seen this for decades. Modi is no different from past governments. IMO, this will stop the US and India from being allies, or even being able to work meaningfully together.
