Also now Ahmedabad 2 line has been started since last 3 months with 33 stations operative now. 4 stations underground 29 stations elevated. New line construction almost completed between remote Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad.

One of the interesting things about Indian metro is the amount of elevated track and stations. Cheaper than underground, and causes less disruption during construction in very busy urban environments.

The main reason is to avoid private land acquisition. It is very difficult to acquire land here.

Less disruption ! They occupy half of roads for years to make viaducts. While for underground just put a tunnel boring machine.

Two pieces trivia to add: 1.) Kochi also has an integrated Water Metro system which connects it's numerous backwater islands. 3 routes are to open in July 2022. 2.) Kanpur Metro is the fastest built metro system in the world. It started in Nov 2019 & the first line opened in Dec 2021. Also when are you doing a similar video for China & Japan ??? They have huge metros almost everywhere. A video on them would be great

Thanks Reece for covering Indian Metros, honestly I'm pretty excited for all this Transit development. I heard GOI is planing to build 25 metro system in 25 cities. And then there are HSR, RRTS, Metro neo and metro lite (for tier 2&3 cities, basically they are tram Bus with elevated corridor)

@@RMTransit You may want to look into Indores pseudo metro system or Indore Bus Rapid Transit System. It is basically operating buses but as metros, with well defined stops so no one can get off or get on in between and there are proper stations and well defined routes. I think for a low cost measure, it is really a good option. Would love to know your thoughts.

@@ugottabekiddingd1999 They wont be successful. So far, they didnt manage to implement the low pressure tubes or even achieve the speed of regular metro. And of course, the biggest issue is the capacity. Even if they manage to be almost as fast as a plane, a plane or a metro can carry few hundred people while a hyperloop carries 4-8 person.

India is planning to build a total of 100+ Metro/ Lite/ Neo systems by 2047, the 100th year of independence. This plan covers at least those 65 cities in India with population > 1M+. The status as of April 2022: 721 Km of Metro Lines Under Operation in 18 Indian Cities; 1,058-km Network in 27 cities in progress. By 2047, it will reach 5000 km in 100 cities

@peace World china liberalized it's economy 14 years ahead of India, so they have a head start anyways. Also, China's land area is twice the size of India, so they would by default have more track miles.

@@psp2663 correction - China's land area is almost 2.8 times India's. It's not just the slowness of democratic processes, land ownership patterns are also opposite. The government owns all the land in China while it is privately owned in India. Land acquisition for large infra projects is a long & arduous, often political, process in India. Sometimes, a single holdout can stall a project for years.

India manages to keep costs down by incorporating elevated highways in the Metro corridor as well. The Road Transportation dept provides money, clearance, contractors and land to build metros. That's why you see bi level metro + highways on the same corridor like Jaipur, Nagpur and Pune. That's a pretty smart use of resources in smaller cities.

It is time India really started thinking about transit end to end.. As in connect most if not all the metros to their airports, bus terminals and railway stations.. Imagine just landing at any airport and being able to reach any corner of the city without much worry..

An interesting update to the Bangalore metro is that, their Namma Metro line is extending beyond its state border Karnataka and entering into the state of Tamil Nadu and will connect the first town in the state from their side, that is Hosur. Basically the line right now ends at Bommasandra, and it's planned to extend upto Hosur, which is roughly 20kms away. Many residents live in the both these places/states and move between borders each day to get to work and do other stuff. It's a heavy corridor. The Karnataka government has approved the plan to extend the line and has asked the Tamil Nadu government for approval now.

Despite having metro, Bangalore is going to see a new state of the art sub-urban railway system much like that in Japan of more than 150 kms of total distance covering Bangalore suburbs. This system will not be exactly like rrts, but a unique one to combat the growing population in Bangalore. I think Hyderabad is also going to see rrts in future.

Unfortunately it seems GoI is insisting for Neo Metro in Thiruvananthapuram since it doesn't meet the population criteria for normal metro according to the 2017 metro rail policy.

1:20 the viennese underground has been almost continuously growing for over 40 years now. i always considered to be a really fast growing system, especially compared to some german cities. but wow, did this indian system grow by that in just a quater of the time? incredible

In the future Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru will all have 300+ km of metro. Also there are plans to upgrade Mumbai sub urban network to ETCS level 2. Delhi Master Plan 2041 also includes upgradation of Delhi Ring and sub urban Railway and 5 more RRTS lines. Indian Railways has also made plans to quadruple all the major routes to run more sub urban services in other cities. Bengaluru is building sub urban network from scratch. IR also plans to run RRTS on upgraded legacy tracks. Nagpur Broad Gauge Metro is one such pilot project. Also in the 750V DC part I think you missed the Kanpur Metro that opened a few months ago. It completed construction in just over 2 years. Looking forward to the Delhi Metro explained video. There's a lot going on in India's Transit Space and it's very exciting.

Modernizing the sub urban rail network will be revolutionary. Imagine Mumbai/Kolkata/Chennai locals with air-conditioning, PSC and modern signaling. This can only happen if IR is kicked from these networks and a proper dedicated operator takes care.

@@panzer3279 too many vested interests, may not happen. Another thing sub urban networks are connected with inter-city train networks and freight networks, all operated by IR. So, a different operator might not be possible.

Oh man it's not too different here in india either. Although it very much depends on state to state. In delhi and Gujarat, local government is pro development so they quickly approve project and start building them. While in mumbai, the government loves to argue only hence the work is really slow there

Not only metros in NCR are planing to use common travel card but there are plans for National Common Mobility Card that will be one card you can use for ANY metro /brt system across the country. The reason is that say for example a person travels regularly from Banglore to Hyderabad (which a ton of people do because these are two major IT cities of india) then that person should not have to carry 2 metro cards. Just one card to use any metro system in the country.

@@RMTransit and Not just metro, this mobility card can be used for any public transit system like buses, long distance trains and cabs etc anywhere in the country. Also you don't need to buy such mobility cards separately, your bank's debit or credit card could also be used as a mobility card throughout the country in future. It's called NCMC network.

@wolverinedeven Yes. In future, Mumbai metro will be the largest metro of India. Mumbai metro will overtake Delhi metro. From Dahanu to Badlapur, Ambarnath, Ulhasnagar, Karamjade--more than 500 km long.

Great video, I didn’t know India had such modern metros. Btw do you ever talk about cities that “should” have metro systems but don’t? I am from Ireland and Dublin is a joke, our metro link is massively delayed because of Nimbys. I think we are one of few European capital cities with no airport connection. We don’t even have a rail connection despite the Dublin-Belfast line only being 5km away

I think (in Europe) Leeds, England takes the cake with missing Metros. It the largest city in Europe that lacks one and it couldn't come soon enough. The whole city runs on unreliable buses (First runs them for those who wonder) and a few rail line into the suburbs, that's all. It the biggest city in the county as well as so many people come in for work. It a fucking disaster.

@@TheEpicAppleEater01 That's what you get for being a city in Northern England, Underfunding and ignored by Westminster. We've had plans to fix this but Westminster never fund them, adds dumb rules to unlock the funding, or starts funding then cuts it again. Be glad Ireland got out this hell hole of a nation, hopefully the North will soon escape too.

I'm very greedy when it comes to railways. At first I was happy when new cities started having metros in India. Later I wanted the network to expand similar to Delhi, now I want them to have lines similar to RRTS connecting near by cities, lite metro/tram for less dense areas etc. Heck I even wish there was a High Speed Rail connecting major cities across the country. But the sad part is I'll grow old by the time things get into place.

@@hiteshadhikari Delhi metro doesn't have a plan for their next phase which it should have had by now and let's be real some of our projects always get delayed because of politics, land acquisition and regulatory hurdles see Mumbai metro, Mumbai Ahmedabad HSR, Navi Mumbai airport is always in limbo it's been going on for the last 30years since it's planning etc... Thankfully last few years have been better for infrastructure than under INC especially for Roads, pipeline, electricity and Railway. RRTS is being built in record pace which is pleasant to know

Hey Bro, you forgot to mention Kanpur metro which was built in just 2 years (One of the fastest construction in the world). Also Bengaluru Suburban Railway project which will have metro like features(for the first time in India) once completed.

Being from Mumbai I can say with no doubt that there's a lot of metro under construction here, one is very close to my house too and work is going on at a good speed. By the mid or end of 2024 many lines in Mumbai may get operational. India will be heavily benefited by these metro since it will manage the crowd and reduce it. There are more cities/new lines in India where the plans to make metro is going on, so you can expect to see more news of it in coming years 🤗❤❤

You will make video on India's HSR corridors in future.currently one is under construction But many others will start their construction soon . In future between 2030-35 it will be changed. That's a well researched and put together video! Great job Reece. There are few more 750V DC third rail systems popping up soon at indore, Bhopal, Surat and Patna which will be using trains a little smaller as per Indian standards. Alstoms has already won contracts for indore and Bhopal metro and bagged a huge contract for Chennai's phase 2 as well. Although sadly due to depot issues on Mumbai's line 4, it cancelled the contract it won back in 2021 fearing the same fate as Mumbai's line 3 (the unluckiest line in all of the network)

Very fascinating. Thank you for highlighting something that wasn't even on my radar. One suggestion if you ever do another 'regional overview' that explores several systems like this: please include a national map showing the cities you will be referring to, and maybe show the map when you introduce a new system, with that city's name highlighted. Just something so we can at least see the spelling of some of these locations. Thanks! Also, would love to see an overview of the railway services in South Africa.

Just imagine this. You stop at Noida International Airport, take a metro to explore ALL areas of delhi, and then take an intercity train to Jaipur, exploring all areas there, and taking the final metro to Jaipur International Airport and then fly to country of your choice. Everything super accessible, cheap, and fast.

Pune metro is going to be one of the biggest after the merge of 23 villages making it larger than the area of Mumbai. Pune already has ton of electric buses which will integrate with metro system and one card will work on metro and buses. Pune already has the highest rooftop solar installations in India and since 4 years Pune and Mumbai and also connected with fully Electric buses and recently more cities and connecting with Pune through electric buses. Compound all this and you have the 3rd largest Metropolitan area of India, the PMR truly achieveing carbon free future.

@Your Father It ofcourse does have an airport. I live 1km away from it. It's just that it is a shitty airport for the major and rapidly growing city that Pune is.

@Your Father it was an air force base but is effectively a civilian airport. Not very big in size but decent enough for domestic flights. Yeah, the city needs a new airport, but I hope more attention is given to trains and other mass transport than polluting, costly airlines.

@Your Father no it's still The IAF base but the airport has been upgraded and modernized a bit, they are building a multi level parking just outside. The airport though small does serve the domestic flights well, though a major city like Pune needs a bigger better airport. The runway used is shared with IAF but the airport has seperate building and facilities.

Amazing Video! RMTransit keeps getting better! Great work! Definitely need to make a separate video on Bangalore metro, after Delhi it is the most dynamic metro with a lot going on. Especially with the current Phase 2, 2A and 2B under construction and also future Phase 3, the challenges faced in Bangalore with the terrain, space crunch, planning, rolling stocks, multi modal transport integration etc. and having CBTC signalling systems its going to be one of the most impressive and remarkable metro project ever! Great video! Super interesting to learn about the metros in india, I don’t feel like they get enough exposure. Could you do a video in the future about the San Francisco Muni Metro? It looks more like a tram system, but it goes underground too which is kind of strange to me.

Hey Reece, love your videos. I would love to see your thoughts on the Chennai metro before the Mumbai one. Mumbai has currently only a couple of lines operational, which isn’t very useful as it covers only a horizontal stretch of land in an extremely longitudinal city. There are other lines being constructed but they’re not much farther along in progress. The Chennai metro on the other hand loops around the city and has excellent coverage to downtown Chennai’s busy areas and connectivity to its bus terminal, long distance rail stations and airport. The underground stations are pure works of art, and they’re much farther along in construction of newer lines which will be serving other parts of the city not yet connected to the metro system.

A Great video indeed, I would like to share some more info, Kolkata Metro's Green Line Is Standard Gauge,and only Kolkata Metro is Operated by Indian Railways,all other metros are either public private partnership or a joint venture between respective state and the union government

hello friend, a very important aspect about Mumbai metro (that you didnt cover/didnt find during your research) is that its built to supplement its existing humongous local train system. The blue line that you showed basically acts like a bridge between two existng (somewhat) parrallel local train lines. You dont even have to leave the station. You just get off the local, get on the overbridge and viola you have the metro. The metro is designed to supplement the public transport system of the city, and honestly its actually so good it deserves a video of its own!

You have already talked about Copenhagen's metro, but you can talk about for example the s-trains, regional trains (regionaltog) and of course Denmarks train system in general. Mumbai is getting 200 km of metro in next 2 years , almost whole city is dug up for it , Maybe in a decade it will replace the sub urban rail , Mumbai geography is very very difficult to build metro because of soft soil

@@Naraa1 It is still being built, most of the track has already been laid. There has just been a major political shitshow in the state government since the last election, which has locked the system in political deadlock, and the COVID 19 pandemic hasn't exactly helped. Still, it is likely that the Shinkansen will open just in time for the next major general election in 2024

To add the Delhi Metro platform screen doors were retrofitted on many lines, not initially designed in. During construction they'd just be open all the time while the trains ran on a normal schedule. Work is done at night of course, the Delhi Metro can get PACKED.

FYI Hyderabad also has a parallel metro called as MMTS (Multi Modal Transport System) in place since 2003 with 44 functional stations .

Adding some information regarding Kochi Metro expansions : - Currently a 3 km expansion for phase 1 is U/C and preparatory works for 12 km phase 2 is underway - Apart from this a further 3 more lines are in plans : Phase 3 to the airport, phase 4 connecting the end points of phase 1 and phase 2, and phase 5 (planned as Neo metro) extending phase 1 to Marine Drive

@RMTransit great story. Another great and insightful story related to this is the management of the metro system in India especially Delhi Metro System. The brilliance and effiency of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, a public institution is in stark contrast to private players like Reliance , a private company which was initially involved in construction and managing the Airport line. It was a disaster. Eventually it was undertaken by DMRC and now it managed extremely well. It is a great example of public institution doing very well as compared to private companies.

Please talk about Bengaluru Commuter Rail (Bengaluru Suburban Rail System), as opposed to the old Indian Railways style rakes, these systems are expected to use modern rakes of Delhi Metro as it is broad gauge.

Hey, I thought the first version of this video was really good, but this update is even better! Great job! (One of the little things I always appreciate about your content is that you clearly make an effort with the pronunciations of place names. You're not 100% accurate all the time, but you're never off by much. It's a stark contrast with another channel where I recently had to shut off a video about the California HSR because they kept pronouncing "Merced" as "MerKED"...)
