Here is my short film on the current condition and the mysterious & historic past of the Indian Canyon Creek Trail. Originally a quick but strenuous hike used by the Native Americans to escape Yosemite Valley. Later becoming a horse toll trail built by early privateers in the 1800"s. here are some clips from my attempt to hike it and understand its story.

When my wife and I hiked this trail, in the late 1960s, we started behind the hospital and went up the east side of the creek. About a quarter to a third of the way up we found a series of three steel ladders, bolted to the rocks, that we had to negotiate; the first went straight up, the second was a traverse ladder and the third was straight up. We ran into a fat communications cable which we followed to the top, using it for assistance along the way. Several places the cable was attached to the rocks hanging off the side and that portion of the trail was very sketchy. what I don't remember is whether we crossed Lehamite Canyon and proceeded up Indian Canyon or whether we ascended Lehamite Canyon; we probably went up Indian Creek. The whole time we were on the east side of the creek. We followed the cable up to the North Dome trail and proceeded west to the Yosemite Falls trail for our decent.

Yeah that’s the alternate route. I would have done that but I wanted to see the actual trail. Thanks for watching

@lanefrank6208 I hiked up the cable trail too - in the 90's. I don't remember the ladders but I probably used them. You have a good memory.

Reading John Muir's books he stated that's the way he would go get into the Backcountry before any trail existed

Watching you scramble up those boulders and knowing that you have to go back and retrieve your camera, then scramble back up those boulders again, made me appreciate the hard work you put into your videos. Great job!

A hunter friend lent Mr. Muir Carlo promising he'd be useful against bear attacks. The story goes, he took the dog aside instructing the hardy Saint Bernard that he was to go with Mr. Muir who would be his new owner to which dog then turned and did exactly that. - John Muir was no stranger to canine companions. In ‘My First Summer in the Sierra’ he wrote about Carlo, a St Bernard. A hunter friend had lent Muir the dog, promising that he would be useful partner in the mountains - particularly during bear attacks. What started off as a practical arrangement soon developed into an emotional attachment, particularly when Carlo went missing for a few days. From Muir’s writing during Carlo's absence it was obvious he was upset. With the Sierra being a popular area for grizzly bears and mountain lions, his imagination feared the worst. Fortunately Carlo was eventually found and reunited with a relieved Muir at a neighbouring camp.

Another great Yosemite video! I only wish I were young enough to do some of your hikes. Perhaps this one would be too much regardless of how old I am.

Not sure I'll love it, but I am sure I can't help myself. 😅 Anything for some solitude (combined with having to be near the valley for whatever reason). Looking forward to it next visit!

@@civmar1 Yes, the ladder adventure was really cool but it may be damaged by rock fall now. Dunno if you had heard about it but there was a steep section where the cable was hung and you follow a series of ladders bolted to the wall to get past the technical part. After that its a short distance to the falls.

....that entire canyon is pretty cool......I lived and worked at The Medical Clinic for several years, so that area was always a favorite for short hikes, as well as topping out and hooking up with the Falls trail, as you did........and what a great siting the ringtail cat was......I lived in Camp 4 for several years in the early 80's and they were frequent nightime visitors.....looking for goodies that may have been left out and about......glad to see they are still around.......
