I’m so glad they took time to honor Indians and their contribution to Jamaican and the Jamaican culture. Jamaica wouldn’t be what it is culturally without the Indians. We Jamaicans are a culturally diverse people, a proud people. I’m part Indian myself but mostly of African ancestry. We are truly, OUT OF MANY ONE PEOPLE’. So glad they preserve their language and Indian heritage as Jamaicans.🤗❤️

what exactly is their influence in Jamaica? because most of the culture is derived from Africa.

@@mariegold3906 The conversation was about INDIAN(not African) and it’s influence on the Jamaican culture. I understand the ‘what-about-Africa innuendo. I never said Africa didn’t influence the Jamaican culture. I simply highlighted the Indian culture influence in the Jamaican culture. What you’ve said may be because you see it in the Jamaican culture but I can only speak on what I know, not what I don’t know, right? It’s okay to share or teach truth, if we know truth. Jamaican culture is a collaboration of other cultures including and I’d guess primarily Africa, and definitely India, as well that I can see.

@@monicagomez4616 What are some of the things in Jamaican culture that was influenced by Indians? Apart from the curry.
@monicagomez4616
@monicagomez4616 Жыл бұрын
@@mariegold3906 ‘….the curry.’🫢 From Google searches anyone can read, even copy and pasted like I did to hopefully answer and resolve the matter: The Indians made a number of contributions to Jamaica including the below: The celebration of Hosei, which was symbolic of the creative exchanges that were made between the African-Creole and Indian cultures epitomises Indo-Jamaican heritage. What started out as a Muslim Indian affair soon stretched to include the African’s participation. They introduced spices like curry powder to Jamaican cuisine. They were skilled metalsmiths and jewellery workers and created gold, silver, and brass jewellery and ornaments. They introduced innovative methods of farming including the cultivation of rice. They included their distinctive music, dance, and traditional dress into the Jamaican culture. Additionally, the influences of their belief systems have also been incorporated into Jamaican religious practices. They used marijuana for medicinal and spiritual purposes They brought lots of new plants and trees along with their products such as coolie plum, betel leaves, betel nut, tamarind, mango, and jackfruit. They incorporated many of their traditional Indian foods into the Jamaican culture such as curry goat, curried potato, roti, eggplant, okra, callaloo, and bitter gourd, which have all become a part of the national cuisine. The origin of the term ‘Gong’ which was made popular by Bob Marley, who was called “Tuff Gong” is an abbreviation of the Hindi word Gangunguru which means ‘great king’ or ‘king of kings’. The name Gong was also ascribed to Leonard Howell, a prominent figure in the rastafarian community. As you can see, the Indians and their contributions are a very strong part of our heritage. Amazing, Isn’t it? After all, we are Jamaicans - Out of Many, One People. Also Google: 10 Contributions Indian Immigrants Made to Jamaica.
@mariegold3906
@mariegold3906 Жыл бұрын
@@monicagomez4616 most of what you wrote is a reach. I did my own google search too. The word gong is of chinese origin, caloloo is of african origin. Btw alot of these food are not unique to India alone as africa has them too. No telling who's version is mostly used here, i am guessing the affricans. The truth is counties like guyana and trinidad culture is more influence by indians than a country like Jamaica and its very obvious. Also hosei is not celebrated here. Even black history month which is a black american thing is celebrated here and not any indian holiday and that's very telling.

Dreadlocks are not unique to Jamaica and Rastafarians. The dreadlocks hairstyle originated in Africa and was worn by various tribes there. The earliest tribe this hairstyle can be attributed to is the Masai tribesmen of Kenya. Many of the warriors of this tribe wore this hairstyle. So just to reiterate what I am saying and what it is facts and what is in the history books and what we actually know about Africa is that lox has been on the heads of Africans and African descendants since the history of time . This is the natural thing with Afro hair you let it grow it turns into lox. I don’t see anything wrong in wanting to preserve one’s culture & traditions by wanting to marry the same race/ culture & be loving & accepting to other races/ cultures. ‘Intermarriage’ does not prove anything. At best you can try to convince some people that you are not racist, but there is nothing wrong with the view of her grand father - only that he was not able to explain or articulate himself. I am saying this as a mixed race person myself. The only benefit of being mixed race is that you might have a higher chance of evaluating what it means to be human & not identify too much with one race/ culture or another.

Essarroy Rupchand aa see labors language was Bhojpuri/ awadi ( east UP n Bihar’s language) but most north indians speak Hindi . Similar but hindi is urban language. Hindustani is term your ancestors used for hindu speaking hindi and muslim speaking urdu. World changed but traditions in guyana trinidad hindu are still backward and offcourse muslims are more radical. So technically hindustani is the language yiur ancestors given name and hide from new generation.

Essarroy Rupchand you people have no connection with the mainland india hindus or overseas hindus of usa canada. You are making old backward hindu stuffs alive but unable to make understand to your new generations who laughs n mocks because they have no idea . We are being taught every logic why we have so many gods , this diwali or holi means what?? We challenge islam here that we are right. We indian hindus changed with respect to time. Your generation is influenced by highly alcoholic, arrogant, sex, party , cultureless people of African origin.

Ganja is from Africa 🌍 continent not Asia, King Solomon useto smoke Ganja in his days. The word rasta was apart of Haile Selassie name,it is not from no Indian culture at all. I am almost 70years now so I been around for decades, so I know about some of the Indian cultures. Because I read the history about them and, the most east Indians is living in St,Mary. You hardly see a full Indian taking any parts of the black man cultures, in Jamaica 🇯🇲. You will see a few half Indians take parts in the Jamaican sports, because they are mixed with black people.I been to school 🏫 with a few full Indians and, they always blend in with black children. All now we are still good friends from school 🏫 days, I never have a problem with them at all.

Not at al true lmao learn your facts. The word Ganja is literally from “Ganges”, and it’s well documented that Indian laborers brought the plant to the place too. And what is this bs about us not “taking part in your culture” yes we do tf? We aren’t in Trinidad lol we have no issues with black people at all. Also literally look it up Hindu gurus have had a profound influence on Rasta culture and religion.

Ganga is from india lol how could u make such statement when the word "Ganga" itself is a indian/hindu word. idk why people now a days think that everything is from africa, not everything that human use in our everyday life is from africa. Theres more than one continent go and educate urself.
