There has been considerable worldwide interest in Buddhism in Tibet. However, the fact that Tibetan Buddhism, its deities and mandalas, were all developed in the Indian University of Nalanda, is not known to many.
In this film, His Holiness the Dalai Lama speaks extensively about the philosophic roots of Tibetan Buddhism. He also speaks about how Tibetan culture, including the script and grammar of their language, comes from India. The film also has extensive interviews with the leading Tibetan experts.Script, Camera and Direction by world-renowned Buddhist expert Benoy K Behl.

Respected Dalai Lama ji says from time to time that "India is the Guru of Tibet, So Much was brought to Tibet, including religion, it's traditions, language, culture, medicine and health-care. All these and so much more were brought to Tibet through the Kindness of Indian teachers. India is the land of Aryans or Arya Bhumi, anything comes from India is very sacred very respectful for us. Eastern-Asian Buddism and Indian Hinduism are very closely related also Traditional Indian Physiology is much advance. So,therefore I describe, or When I meet an Indian, I always say, Your are traditionally our Guru, We are Chela (disciples), You Indian Our Guru. Then also I mention that we Tibetan's are not only Indian Guru's Chela, but also quit reliable chela, That means in Guru's own land of Dharma, lots of ups and downs, during this period, We your chela through centuries, we kept your knowledge intact, so we are quit a reliable chela (disciples), So our relationship (Indian & Tibet) is something very unique Guru & Chela."

The Dalai Lama is dreadfully wrong. Apart from religion (Buddhism can't really be considered as "Indian" since few people in Nepal and India practice it and developed it, rather, Asian countries have contributed to Buddhism and ensured its survival) and script, the language is strictly Sino-Tibetan. I don't know how an eminent person like His Holiness can make such irresponsible and propagandist statements.

Whole of the video is based upon the Indian connection. If you have some other counter point, kindly do it with proof i.e say a video like this one. One should not simply make a counter statement and undo the efforts of the producer. whole of video is full with Buddhas advice to his followers to just not accept an idea, just because of faith but with logic and reasoning. kindly follow the advice. Indians wont mind if the credit is shared by any other countries or cultures in keeping Buddhism alive.

Very educative. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic. I just wanted to impart this information to you.

As sure as my name is Richard Josephson I am distinct from my mother, Barbara, who I love deeply, who brought me into this world, and introduced me to it. The same logic can be applied to Tibetan Buddhism. Let it stand on its own two feet. It certainly developed on its own, whatever influences it has had.

Intermingling with the indigenous Tibetian Bon religion, and introduced many centuries after India's neighbouring regions had adopted the original teachings, as contained in Theravada Buddhism, Tibetian Buddhism is far, far removed from Buddha's original teaching. Funny how in the West when one mention Buddhism it becomes automatically synonymous with Tibet!

It is an eye opening to me an Hindu Indian. All the respect to his holiness Dalai Lama. I wonder how could china hate such a great person and subjugate the Tibetan culture? I wonder ,is there any conflict with the Chinese culture or any religions of China , because of that China is about to make Tibetan Buddhism extinct. In this context, I would like to put a query to His highness Dalai Lama. Sir ,you said that Tibetans are very reliable Chelas of Indians, since it is the Tibetans who kept the Buddhism live ,during very hard times in India for Buddhisim. In to days context of Chinese occupation of Tibet and binding the Tibetan Buddhism by the" no religion" diktat of the Chinese state and communist party of china ,will it be possible for the Tibetan people to keep the flag of Tibet Buddhism high ?
@SonofSethoitae
@SonofSethoitae 3 жыл бұрын
There are a few answers. One is that China has historically always tried to assert its influence in Tibet, both before and after the revolution. The second is that Communist China needed a buffer between them and the decidedly not Communist government in India, and Tibet was right where they needed it.

I have been researching Buddhism and I'm just so curious , i respect the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama but if someone can please explain this to me , once he left the palace and sat under the tree he attained Nirvana and the teachings are about kindness and compassion, if that's the case why didn't he get or take care of his wife and son 🙄🤔 ? You have attained ENLIGHTENMENT but you don't go back and take care of your wife and son . A father is very important in family life and his wife was a single mother , unless you try to justify and say that he had a mission . A child still needs there father
@kusali11
@kusali11 Жыл бұрын
The point of the story is that he left the home to find answers. It wasn't that his family was in physical danger but it was a metaphysical danger. And in that sense he did what a father should do. So he went out and found the way to ultimate happiness. When he returned both his son and wife later joined the order and attained great levels of peace. Understand it like Maslow's Hierarchy, that society was at the top of the pyramid, it was all about spiritual development.

Kumar Gaurav Buddhism DOES promote tolerance and learning, as he said. There is NOTHING wrong with tolerance. Tolerance is a key important of the open society and civilization. Over a billion people need to learn tolerance. The Buddhists get tolerance. And we Buddhists have the concept of respect. The basic level of respect is ahimsa, nonviolence, as taught in the Dhammapada by Sakyamuni Buddha. Your pathetic criticism is too broad and you are shooting blanks. Did you mean Europeans or North Americans or South Americans? Maybe you need to learn some respect. And some reasoning and public speaking skills. Thumbs down on you says this white boy acarya.

@wcangel 9 жыл бұрын
Kumar Gaurav Mutual respect means that when Pakistan thinks about a nuclear attack on India they have to remember that India will smash them right back as a matter of principle. Mutual respect means "Do not behave towards others except as you would have others treat you." As Guru Sakyamuni taught. Otherwise everybody loses. Some people only understand force. Clearly you are not familiar with the history of South Asia. Respect does not have to mean liking someone, much less revering them. One basic definition of respect is TO HEED. And sometimes respect has to be earned. I don't say Namaste to orcs or Islamists. Some 100 million to 200 million have died in the Islamist wars over 14 centuries. I have profound contempt for war on civilian populations, piracy and enslavement. But I respect the danger these orcs represent and I oppose them.

I wish I would be wrong to label him with truly the colonial mind as British left over to them.... Likewise, he also overlooks to mention Nepal as one of the major countries to Practice Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism which is present day reality. There is no doubt India is great place for Buddhism with many great Siddhas, this does n;ot mean you overlook or distort other facts as well.... Rest only became a transit for many Tibetan and Indian scholars in historical time to practice ( you can read about Lady Yeshe Chogyal, Guru Rinpoche who did many Sadhana during their time in present day Nepal), gave a home for many great scholars from Tibet and West after Chinese invasion in Tibet. I agree with the presenter and the title of the documentary that root of Buddhism was in present day India. Previously there was no name as India before British ruled India. That was Bharat or say HIndustan. My only concern is to present the fact rightly that Shakyamuni Buddha was born in Lumbini which lies in present day Nepal as approved by UNESCO and even other great scholars from India.

Babu Dallakoti So Nepal was a country at the time of the Buddha? According to this map it wasn't so to argue semantics about countries is quite pointless since in 600 B.C. there was a region known as India or the Indus Valley - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gandhara#mediaviewer/File:Ancient_india.png

Babu Dallakoti if buddha is a god then my question is why buddha born with the help of sex??????? jesus was not born in that way coz no men can give a birth to god as it is insult for the real god and my jesus i mean ur jesus said im the one the way for ur peramnent life is there any god said like this before ever or buddha himself, the jesus was already born after adam and huwwa commited into sin, Allah is the nature and jesus is his beloved son where he was presented the beautiful gift that is what we r gift for him but devil is trying to destroy us by making us sinner in many ways,jesus is the god no any spirit told me that im the way of life but he does it means i cant relay on any one coz devil has a great mind in confusing people. the bible says when u get hurted by some one then let them do it coz our enemy is also the son of jesus so it means god trying to educate us he doesnt care abt ur body but soul... see i cant write on my own this beutiful lines coz im not god hahaha buddha was asked one question by his deciple that are u the way of life he said no im not the way but one spirit will come in this world who would be greater than me and even if i get many spirit in me by preaching or meditaton i wont be like him coz he himself the spirit of god then how could i be considered myself as a GOD... my question to u all is that what if u r god then how will u present ur self in front of human????? with the help of sex by men and women ????????? Is Kapalibasthu today in Uttar Pradesh, or, in Nepal. Of course Lumbini is. Is it fair to say that the Shakya clan's territory spanned both UP and Nepal of the present day? And, in the mention of Vajrayana Buddhism, yes of course in Tibet and elsewhere. But why not to cite also, Nepal? After all, the only form of Buddhism whose liturgy is still in Sanskrit, and is of the Vajrayana, is amongst the Newar Buddhists of Kathmandu valley.

You mean well but you don't know what you are talking about. Mahayana Buddhism is the biggest sect -- FAR BIGGER than Hinayana/Theravada. Please read the Lotus Sutra before you make documentaries on Buddhism that are based on White man's propaganda or Sri Lankan radical nationalism.... not real Ajanta/Nalanda tradition which is MAHAYANA. It frustrates me when people talk about Buddhism without even reading the Lotus Sutra or the major Mahayana texts.

As I quote Dalai Lama, "The antidote for ignorance is knowledge, not prayers." So, why do these Tibetan monks chant prayers day & night? Why do they have prayer flags and prayers' wheel? Why do they give so much importance to the prayer, "Om Mane Padme Hum"? Buddha did not teach any prayers.

Sankhara Nirujjhanti dear friend--knowledge comes from learning and reciting holy prayers everyday is a good way to recollect the scattered mind into good virtues so that these great teachings can set permanently in a frame of mind.it is not easy for any human being no matter monks or common man to vanquish all the negativity right away.its a slow process,and ,it needs continuous study and practice.

+tenzin kelsang , Strange but your spiritual leader Dalai Lama said Knowledge is the antidote for ignorance and you say knowledge comes from prayers and yet, you Tibetans are so ignorant about Buddhism. Tell me where in Tipitika Buddha said knowledge comes from prayers. Did Buddha taught any prayers at all? Do you believe in Buddha's teachings or Padmasambhava's teachings? You call yourselves Buddhist but you give more importance to Padmasambhava than Buddha. If you believe in Padmasambhava's teachings than you are not Buddhist but if you believe in Buddha's teachings than stop chanting all those useless prayers. In Buddhism, nothing happens by chance or by accident or by fluke; everything happens for a reason. For example, Obama, a black American, did not become the President of USA by chance or by fluke; he is the president because he has earned great merits in his previous life. So also, Bill Gate and Warren Buffet are Billionaire because of their past Karma and not by luck or by good fortune. Similarly, according to the laws of Karma, Tibetans lost their countries to Chinese not due to ill-fortune or ill-fate but due to their bad karma of spreading corrupted and distorted Buddhism. If you look into the past history of Buddhism, there were many such corrupted and distorted sect of Buddhism like Vajrayana; all those sects now are extinct. Similarly, Vajrayana will also die out soon.

Sankhara Nirujjhanti Many Theravadin monks recite prayers in Pali. I have large Buddhist prayer book in Pali and English. Apparently you don't like the Theravadin prayers or the Theravadin monks who pray. In the Mahayana teaching we say that Guru Sakyamuni taught Medicine Buddha and Amitabha Buddha and so forth. These are found in the Chinese and Japanese traditions as well. The Tibetans have those practices too. The Theravadins do not. The Tibetans are not ignorant about Buddhism. They have a lot more teaching than the Theravadin traditions. You say that Vajrayana is corrupt and distorted. But the Dalai Lama is a monk and scholar in the tradition of Nalanda University. He already knew more Buddhist philosophy at the age of twenty than you will ever know in this lifetime. You ask: "Why do they give so much importance to the prayer, Om Mani Padme Hum?" You do not know that this is a mantra, not a prayer. You do not know what a mantra is because you are ignorant of mantra. Hundreds of millions of Buddhist use mantra. It is not just a Tibetan mantra. It is part of the general Mahayana, like Medicine Buddha. The mantra has a purifying function. It also focuses the mind. 14th Dalai Lama "It is very good to recite the mantra Om mani padme hum, but while you are doing it, you should be thinking on its meaning, for the meaning of the six syllables is great and vast... The first, Om [...] symbolizes the practitioner's impure body, speech, and mind; it also symbolizes the pure exalted body, speech, and mind of a Buddha[...]" "The path is indicated by the next four syllables. Mani, meaning jewel, symbolizes the factors of method: (the) altruistic intention to become enlightened, compassion, and love.[...]" "The two syllables, padme, meaning lotus, symbolize wisdom[...]" "Purity must be achieved by an indivisible unity of method and wisdom, symbolized by the final syllable hum, which indicates indivisibility[...]" "Thus the six syllables, om mani padme hum, mean that in dependence on the practice of a path which is an indivisible union of method and wisdom, you can transform your impure body, speech, and mind into the pure exalted body, speech, and mind of a Buddha[...]" - Thoughts to be had whilst chanting transcribed in simplification keeping essence: Being and non-beings proliferate loving compassion and indivisible intelligent equanimity; Om Mani Padme Hum. That is the natural ubiquitous pervasive force of consciousness. These frequencies are in the Sanskrit tongue, act as a harmonic sound resonance against blocking energy, or sleeping energy. Plants reflect this action as well because of the phonetic strength of vibration that is stimulated by natural pronunciation. -H.H. Tenzin Gyatso, 14th Dalai Lama, "On the meaning of: OM MANI PADME HUM"[8] Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche "The mantra Om Mani Pädme Hum is easy to say yet quite powerful, because it contains the essence of the entire teaching. When you say the first syllable Om it is blessed to help you achieve perfection in the practice of generosity, Ma helps perfect the practice of pure ethics, and Ni helps achieve perfection in the practice of tolerance and patience. Pä, the fourth syllable, helps to achieve perfection of perseverance, Me helps achieve perfection in the practice of concentration, and the final sixth syllable Hum helps achieve perfection in the practice of wisdom. "So in this way recitation of the mantra helps achieve perfection in the six practices from generosity to wisdom. The path of these six perfections is the path walked by all the Buddhas of the three times. What could then be more meaningful than to say the mantra and accomplish the six perfections?" -Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, Heart Treasure of the Enlightened Ones[9] Karma Thubten Trinley "These are the six syllables which prevent rebirth into the six realms of cyclic existence. It translates literally as 'OM the jewel in the lotus HUM'. OM prevents rebirth in the god realm, MA prevents rebirth in the Asura (Titan) Realm, NI prevents rebirth in the Human realm, PA prevents rebirth in the Animal realm, ME prevents rebirth in the Hungry ghost realm, and HUM prevents rebirth in the Hell realm." Here are two excellent books on the practice o9f OM MANI PADMA HUM: (1) Trainings In Compassion: Manuals On The Meditation Of Avalokiteshvara Paperback - April 24, 2004 by Dzogchen Ponlop (Author), Jamgon Kongtrul (Author), Chandrakirti (Author), Paperback: 136 pages Publisher: Snow Lion (April 24, 2004) ISBN-10: 1559392061 www.amazon.com/Trainings-Compassion-Manuals-Meditation-Avalokiteshvara/dp/1559392061/ (2) The Heart Treasure of the Enlightened Ones: The Practice of View, Meditation, and Action: A Discourse Virtuous in the Beginning, Middle, and End Paperback - January 26, 1993 by Patrul Rinpoche (Author), Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche (Author), The Padmakara Translation Group (Translator), Paperback: 260 pages Publisher: Shambhala; 1st edition (January 26, 1993) ISBN-10: 0877734933 www.amazon.com/Heart-Treasure-Enlightened-Ones-Meditation/dp/0877734933/

+wcangel Theravadin monks don't recite mantra, they are memorizing the sutta. It's more like a ancient custom or tradition but they are absolutely not praying nor they have prayers like "Om Mani Padme Hum". Mantra's are Prayers and they are not different. Prayer is English word and Mantra is Sanskrit but they mean the same. All the explanation you gave about the mantra in your previous response, sounds like a Hindu explaining the power of Mantra. Are you a Hindu or a Buddhist? You say I don't know about Mantra; as a matter of fact, I do know a lot about mantras than you do. I also know to read & write Sanskrit and I can chant mantras in sanskrit from Rig, Sama, Yajur & Atherva Vedas. I have read Puranas, Upanishads & Bhagavat Geeta and many more sacred books of Hindu religion. By the way the word "OM" which you borrowed from vedic religion, I don't think neither you nor Dalai lama knows the meaning of "OM". When you use the word OM in Buddhism, there itself you have corrupted Buddhism. In vedic religion, the sound "A+U+M" arose first in Brahman (Divine Cosmic Place) and all the gods, goddesses, worlds and universe derived from OM. It's quite obvious, if you understand what I am saying that this word word "om" cannot fit into Buddhism at all. Om is also called as Beeja mantra because it has no meaning, they use OM for meditation. This is just a short definition of OM but it has much, much more than this. Anyway, in Vedic religion, particular mantras are chanted to invoke the blessings of a particular gods or goddesses; Most of the mantras are nothing but praises to god/goddesses and they chant mantras to please their god/goddesses. Tell me, why are we chanting Mantras in Buddhism since we don't have god, whom are you people trying to appease? You write & I quote, "The mantra has a purifying function. It also focuses the mind." Can you explain rationally or logically how one can purify their mind by chanting mantras or prayers? Further, tell me where in Tipitaka it's written that one can purify their mind by chanting mantras. If mind can be purified by chanting mantras/prayers, it would be so easy to attain Nirvana; all the Tibetans monks would have attain nirvana even before they were exiled to India. You don't sound like a Buddhist, you sound more like a Hindu. For example, in Hinduism, one can purify their mind by chanting Gayatri Mantra thousand times. Or one can avoid or escape death by chanting Mrityunjai mantra. Buddha was very critical about Vedic rites, ritual, ceremonies & chanting prayers and you people are doing the very same thing what Buddha had criticized the Brahmans. So, what will be next, you gonna sacrifice cows, goats & human beings according to the vedic rituals? Dalai Lama must be a great person but he's a misguided Buddhist teachers-----it's like a blind teacher leading a nation of blind monks & believers. Instead of wasting your time by chanting prayers, performing rituals, rites & ceremonies, you Tibetan should read and try to understand Tipitaka as it contains the complete knowledge of Dharma. You don't need to look for knowledge anywhere else. The more you reject or deny Tipitaka the more you are deviating away from Dharma. And most importantly remember without TIPITAKA there's no Buddhism.

You know I never read much of anything about Buddhism until this last year, but I already understood and believed in the concepts they talk about. I was always aware of some of these practices at a young age and learned more as I got older by observation, acknowledgement of my own ignorance, being kind and truthful. I knew that the human desire was a two edged sword. If we learned to lose it, we wouldn't long for anything when it was gone, and we wouldn't feel we wasted years by the desires left undone. That is Enlightenment. A balanced state of being. Everything universal things require balance. It is human psychology that works with the natural world. It's too bad I live in the West. I would love to talk about life with some of these beautiful people. I know the path, but I still have much ignorance to shed🫠 Mind you they say the Darmha will move to the west. So maybe I will have some time yet😊 But I won't get my hopes up...balance baby, balance 😄

I think the idea is to focus. One thought to produce extreme focus. Not a wandering mind. Much of the teachings are psychologicaly based. So there is the science of the mind or brain as well. For thousands of years we've know that repetition is the best teacher, or practice. You could practice anything diligently and you never know what you may accomplish. Like the student with the piano or guitar. They say the average amount is 20,000 hours creates mastery. Maybe that applies to other worldly experiences too. I mean have you ever seen someone try for years to bend a spoon without physical force? I know I haven't because hardly anyone has witnessed it and common consensus is those claims are fraudulent. So nobody wastes their time on it for hours and years. How do they know it will pay off? Lol ....but you never know....know....know (echo in the distance)😂
