My niece is American and her husband from India. They had the most gorgeous celebrations. I was so interested in their clothing for each type of celebration and the street parade for him with the dresses up horses. Her dress weighed 17 pounds but was so beautiful.

India has many communities & each community has their own different wedding traditions, food, clothes.. everything is different. Punjabi wedding, Bengali wedding, South Indian wedding, Muslim Weddings, Christian weddings.. all different. I think the typical Indian wedding popular in the west is the North Indian wedding.

Sorry, i don't know how your family did it but joota chupai (hiding groom's shoes) is actually a fun ritual and shouldn't be stopped. I am not sure of the exact reason behind it but I have seen and felt that it's a great way having fun in wedding and breaking ice between two families in an arranged marriage set up

I lived in Indonesia for a lotta years, I quickly learned about "Jam Karet" it means "Rubber time" no one at any time for any occasion is ever on time, hence rubber time, time can stretch!

In northeast india it's a two day ceremony. 1st is called the juroon. When bride and groom send each other their new bridal /traditional attires, jwellery, new vanity/grooming products that includes sindoor, oil , make-up and skin care products etc. We do the haldi / ritual bathing on the same day . Next day is the main marriage and reception. But nowadays people host the reception on a seperate day after the wedding.

First off. This is the funniest video you 2 have put out. I laughed so hard I had to stop making dinner. Second, you are not lying about wedding start times. Friend of mine got married to an Egyptian and they sent out 2 different invitations. One for the Americans with the correct start time, and one for the Egyptians with a start time 3 hours early and the wedding still started late!

These so called traditions they are talking about aren't real ones, rather most of them have originated in Bollywood movies and Indian expats far removed from real traditions are using these filmy stylings as traditions. To understand real Indian wedding traditions, one needs to go away from the cities and to the rural parts where the real soul of India resides and perpetuates. That tearing of cloth of the groom is actually an ugly morphed form of the real ritual where the groom is washed with haldi (turmeric), chandan (sandalwood) and karpur (camphor) infused water to cleanse the body. Tearing of clothes is a modern deviation similar to how people smash birthday cakes on their face and head rather than eating it proyperly.

Correction about arriving at weddings on time. Lately the 2 weddings I've been to actually started on time. The most recent one stated on the card Bharat (Groom) arrival 5:30pm. We are the grooms side and we wanted to walk in together leading the Bharat to the hall. We arrived at 5:50pm the Bharat was already inside the entrance of hall halfway through the welcoming puja 😬 But at least we were able to walk the groom to the Mandap (Altar)... So be on time or early. I am in California so, that might be the difference. And yes the shoe game has gotten wild. People have gotten hurt. There was one wedding we weren't able to make it to and we herd when they were playing the shoe game it got out of hand and someone pulled a gun out 😱
