Does kinda make one why they didn't use Ingruber for at least the 1944 portion as a younger Indy...he's played a younger version of Ford in a movie, and Last Crusade went with River Phoenix for a teenage Indy. So it's not like series hasn't done plot-related flashbacks with younger actors.

This movie can go in the slightly deceptive trailer list, since the trailer version of the jump from the plane left out Roman fleet attacking Syracuse. And I was perfectly fine with that. One other thought. While I really liked the film, my son and I discussed that it felt like it was darker than the others. Not as gory as Temple of Doom, but more callous to some of the deaths. Unlike Mola Rom, who, while brutal, killed for his religion or Belloq who seemed, at least later in the film, reluctant to kill, Vollmer and especially Weber killed for convenience. And while Marion looked away from the mechanic's fate at the plane and you had something similar by the big guard in Temple of Doom where Indy even tried to save him from being crushed, there was no pity from Teddy for drowning Hauke. It just felt like this film had a little less of our better angels. Still really enjoyed it. Just a thought.

Also, Indy looks down at the parade and sees Helena cutting across the street through the parade and an Irish marching band... playing a song that sounds very similar to the one that another Irish marching band was playing when Richard Kimble cuts through/across the St Patricks Day parade in The Fugitive. I would bet anything that was a little mini homage.

I was a snare drummer in a Bag Pipe Band. That tune is called "Massed Bands." Everyone learns it so when necessary for multiple Pipe Bands all playing together, we all know it, no matter what other songs we might play by ourselves and in competitions. The snare drum that accompanies it is really complicated. My son marched with me for two years and when that scene came on we looked at each other and nodded: the unspoken communication, "Massed Bands."

The Spear of Longinus is also the starting point for Barry Sadler's "Casca: The Eternal Mercenary" books. The main character is Casca Rufio Longinus, and he was the Roman legionnaire who lanced Christ in his side on Golgotha. Christ then says to him "Soldier, you are content with what you are. Then that you shall remain, until we meet again.", thus damning Casca to walk the Earth until the Second Coming. They were a great series of books.
