Indiana Kayak Fishing: Largemouth of a Lifetime! 7/2/23

My Father-in-Law and I got out for a few hours in the morning to fish a Northern Indiana river. We got rained on to start the trip, but the clouds parted and we got several nice hours to fish. We boated some decent Smallmouth and Jay caught the biggest Largemouth Bass I have ever seen in my life! A true trophy for around here. What an awesome experience. Enjoy the video!

Awesome largemouth. I have had many hits on a Whopper Plopper when the line tangles around the front hook. For me I typically miss them because the front hook is pulled out of place and the fish usually hit the middle of the body/front hook. Missed a big Pike yesterday that exact same way.

They definitely like the action when it is tangled, but I haven't had too many fish that miss the 'ol Plopper even when it is tangled. Maybe I just get lucky? And yeah, Pike love these things too! I see you are in Ohio. Glad to see that Ohio has great Smallmouth and Pike fishing too! Thanks for watching!

For those needing to know how to calculate the weight, it's girth x girth x length divided by 800. So for this, particular fish, it is 15x15x23/800. Which would given him the weight of 6.46875 pounds. This formula will put you really close to the weight of the fish every time.

Thanks for the formula! This is exactly what I got from the internet as well so I bet that is pretty close to the actual weight of the fish. What a fish. I still don't think Jay and I can believe we crossed paths with it! Thanks!

@@IndianaKayakFishingJournal I learned this formula many moons ago on a fishing excursion with my grandfather in Minnesota. It definitely comes in handy when there isn't a scale in the boat or with you on shore. I enjoy your content. Keep it up!

I understand fishing spots are secret however, I am in Indiana and new to Kayak fishing. Any idea of the area would be appreciated

Sorry, but I am going to have to keep this one under wraps. It is a very small area and it doesn't need any more pressure. Where are you located? I could give you other suggestions for places to try!

I don't normally carry a scale because usually weight doesn't really matter to me. This is one of handful of fish that I wish I could have weighed. A length and girth weight estimate is good enough though. They are pretty accurate and I really just wanted to know ballpark. Thanks for watching!
