As an American, I too learned about Bose and Raman in physics courses. I also studied biochemstry under Rajindar Ranu and Ananda Chakrabarty. As a common middle-class boy from the mid-west, I knew that culturally they were different from me, but scientifically speaking, their teaching was seamless. I am very greatful for the gifts that all these Indians have given me and the rest of the world.

I cried when he said "Raman cried because his chair had no Indian flag rather had British flag". His greatness displayed when he dedicated the nobel prize to the freedom fighters of India.

I am blown away I did not know they were indian, I have been interested in Phisics for a while I have read all these names in the papers and books never know who those people are, I am big time amazed so India also have their fair share of scientists in the modern world. I am loving the growth of India jealous Pakistani and a human who recognise the importance of these discoveries. This makes me proud too.

It's where I got a lot of ideas about the actual workings of hidden timing and using a "think for yourself" attitude that is an Indian tradition, or that is how it looks like from the outside..

At 44:35 Henrietta Levitt is mentioned as the astronomer who used Saha's equation. However, it was Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin who actually used it to calculate the relative abundance of hydrogen and hellium in the sun, in her PhD thesis of 1925: "Stellar Atmospheres, a Contribution to the Observational Study of High Temperature in the Reversing Layers of Stars".

I am watching this as I am using Raman's work to reinterpret the atmosphere.

We need more of such films in India (also in regional Indian languages), inspiring Indians to science and technology, history, culture and rich world heritage. Just like PBS series in USA. More and more we educate Indians can reduced major current challenges such as corruption, and population growth. Having no strict govt. control like in China, spreading knowledge is the way wise solution to India's current issues. If India does better, world does much better. Scientists and wisdom is one caste/religion. Knowledge has nothing to do with denying God or totally accepting him! A fantastically made documentary on the Indian Scientists who upheld India's name in international arena of cutting edge science at that time, contributing in the branches of science which are not only highly competitive but also demand creative excellence at a very high level. And that too at an age when India was under British rule, struggling for its own independence. With limited means Bose, Raman, Saha scaled heights by sheer dint of their talent, intelligence and creativity, contributing to quantum physics, which was on its wake at the time and helped build its foundation. As Dr. Partha Ghosh, himself a reputed physicist, in the documentary, pointed out that without bosons known as the force carrying particles, the whole Universe may collapse; from which one may infer how significant and important the contribution is! Every text book in Physics now talks about bosons, Raman effect and Saha's equation. These physicists worked under conditions which were not conducive anyway at all at that time in India and in comparison was no where near the conditions for doing science that was available in whole of Europe, but that could not deter them! They made significant contribution contribution to physics and had put India in world map. They showed that Indians can do science at such dizzy height, addressing fundamental questions in Physics. These are examples which should make every Indian proud! Now India should make forays into the basic science research for which there is no dearth of talents. Besides focusing on technologies- which can not be neglected in anyway- there must be policies to bring real talents who have knack and love for basic, fundamental research in science. Not any scientifically sounding quasi wishy-washy science which is nothing but fashionable nonsense, some of which have gained some acceptance world over now, as far as the observation goes! Giving real importance on Research in real, hard science which Bose, Saha and Raman did! This is very very important! And disseminating true scientific temper through all means and every available channels! If people are not made to understand how valuable researching in real fundamental science is, real advancements, progress and thereby the whole country will face problems. If concentrated and sustained focus is given on fundamental research it will sure yield long term benefit and results. Advanced countries long understood the importance of basic science research and that's the reason they have advanced themselves in the first place! So no wonder they are ahead of us in many areas! After Bose, Saha and Raman we also had very good scientists like Bhaba, Sarabhai and others. Even few Nobel Prize winners have Indian lineage, mostly Indian born. Who did not lament, "only if he were an Indian citizen still at that time!" when S. Chandrasekhar won Nobel Prize in Physics for his immense contribution in Black Hole research? There are other examples like this Har Gobind Khorana, Venkatraman Ramakrishnan... few on the list what might have been. So Besides being proud and knowing that India has no dearth of talents now is the time when one should address the problems which is hindering real research in basic science and remove them at any cost leaving time killing futile politicking and engaging in debate and fighting over trivial social political or religious issues aside.We have had enough! Yes issues related with humanity and human conditions should be dealt forthwith and resolved by good administration in place and people who are adept in dealing with this no doubt but with good intentions and quality. On both of these fronts progress can march forward simultaneously. Thanks to Director Raja Choudhury the director of this documentary for making such a good documentary! Thoroughly delighted and thrilled! And oh! Dr. Partha Ghosh's passion has shown through whenever he spoke. At this age it is wonderful to see how passionate heis even now! As the documentary says (and as some of us have always believed) many Indians have often been forgotten and denied their due recognition in several fields (and not just science). In the technology(and internet) world of today, finally they are beginning to get the credit that's due.

Bose was the first genius to speak on the importance of mother tongue medium of instruction. He even taught science in mother tongue to give emphasise. Later Abdul Kalam and other scientists requested mother tongue medium of learning.. Sadly these great scientist advice still not given importance. If it was given we would have progressed leaps and bounds... Now we are happy only with few achievements.. Fractions of achievement if only mother tongue medium of learning was done long back

University of Calcutta is the only university to have given 5 noble laureates, 1 academy award winner & 1 dirac medal winner in India... Even today, India's most accomplished physicist who has won "The breakthrough prize in foundation Physics" for his work on String Theory, an awardee of Padma Shree & Padma Bhusan & a royal society fellow London is none other than a CU alumni (Dr. Ashoke Sen)...

This only goes on to show knowledge has no boundaries. Be it a hindu, Muslim, Christian, jew etc etc you are a human first. And this inherent curiosity of the humankind is beyond national boundaries! These scientists are a glowing example to the rest of mankind to come out of all the illusions of religion caste race and any chauvinistic ideologies. So… that explains why and how Indian scientists, mathematicians and other brilliant Indians from various fields are able to land a very difficult landing on the moon with ease! These brilliant men have been laying out the foundation for over a century to put Indian physicists at the forefront of cutting edge ideas up to this day. Interestingly, there are many Indian students in the Philippines taking up medicines. I’d like to see Indians with brilliant quantum physics background share their talents with their Asian brothers and sisters in the Philippines.

Suddenly I feel the urge to just pick up a book and solve some equations, think of some problem and the solve them. I need more of such documentaries it gives quite a motivation. I mean Bose being half of the universe, isn't that a flattering thought.

These stories were known to me as I keep reading about them ans their research. U present it very beautifully, it is inspiring for me. I must say it is not a film only it is a treasure even for the future generation. Please keep doing it. We Indians want to play in the world cups. We did it in hockey. Now we hope that we won the nobel in science with the tri-colour.

Very, very good to recognize these men and their contributions to science. Men who aimed for the heavens of light, while still shrouded by the darkness of colonial oppression but overcame all empire motivated psychological l projections of intellectual inferiority to emerge as everlasting stars in the constellation of modern science , shedding light for all mankind to behold and understand the bonds of humanity, IMHO.

All the ones mentioned are at least known in India. There is another hero, who probably deserved more than 2 Nobel prizes yet remain unknown to the most. He is none other than Dr. Yellapragada Subbarao :)

It is unfortunate, Dr. K.S. Krishnan, researcher working w/ CV Raman who contributed immensely to CV rAMAN'S research paper. CV Raman did not make any efforts to share the prestigious Nobel Prize, nor is recognized, unlike many Nobel laureates who have shared Nobel prize.. It was a joint effort,. CV Raman took all the credit for Dr. KS Krishnan's researach, effort. PM Pandit Nehru appointed DR. KS Krishnan as the first director of National Physics Lab. (NPL).

All Raman Effect experiments and publications and the Nobel were done from Calcutta at IACS before 1930. He moved to Bangalore in 1934 and published many papers from there but not the Nobel work. All of this was verified by Raman Research Institute and IACS.

The Bengal Renaissance ended around 1912 with Rabindranath Tagore's Nobel. JC Bose and PC Ray paved the way for SN Bose and Saha and it was during the period from 1917 to 1930 that our 3 geniuses really blossomed and revolutionized the world world of physics - that is what this film is about - that revolution in Physics.

Yes, the focus was primarily on SNBose, Raman and Saha and PC Ray and the exciting Quantum Age that emerged in the early 20th century. PC Ray is mentioned in the dialogue with Partha Ghose and JC Bose is shown in the early part of the film.
