Guyana is a country in the northern part of the continent of South America. Around 40% of Guyana's population is Indian by origin.
But, how did this happen? How did such a large ethnic Indian population come to inhabit the islands so far away from Indian shores?
In this video we explain how it happened.

Lol most Indians in Guyana are Christians... what r u talking about??? To say that Hinduism was the oldest practicing religion is a lie from hellfire... basic research would say that Hindu was and never had been oldest religion. Most of Hindu culture is a myth and nothing else search for truth...... hopeless

Guyana isn't the only country. Fiji Islands and many other former British colonies have the same history. When India was a British colony, they took Indians to work in Sugar Cane farms all over the world, including Queensland in Australia, Fiji, Guyana, Trinidad etc. These were mostly North Indians from UP and Bihar but later followed by South Indians, Punjabis and Gujaratis. My ancestors came from Haryana to the Fiji Islands 130 years ago but like most Fiji Indians, we migrated to Australia and New Zealand after the anti-indian coups in 1987. Today most Fiji Indians live in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and USA with some in UK etc.

It’s also the same in North America with Canada The Us and Mexico but mostly by Sikhs until the 70s-80s where Indians started migrating too It’s why The majority of British Columbia has Panjabi as the second most spoken language, and a majority of GTA, Alberta and the rest of British Columbia having it as the 3rd most spoken language in the area

The story about the recruitment for Fiji Islands, narratives on trickery, do not go down well. Since the Girmit was labour supply, the narrative about the way they were treated do not match the market supply. For the Labour to be bought by the plantation owners, the labour supplied had to be healthy. Also when we look at the total numbers brought to Fiji from 1879 to 1916, was approx 60,000, but only 24,000 returned after the indenture. its narrated by Tota Ram Sanadhya, that Fiji is a "narak" (Hell), so question is was it narak for only a few? the real answer why 36K did not return to india lies in the boarding passes. those whose Passes had immigration passes mentioned "R Of Trinidad" "R of Fiji" "R Of Mauritius" "R of natal" etc, could not go back to India. Hence there were almost 36K of them.

98% of the Indians in Guyana kept their Indian roots. They eat curry, Dhal, Achar 4 times a week. They celebrate Pagwah aka Holi and Diwali and they do Pujas at home. Our country is a beautiful diversed mix of religions, cultures, history, cuisines of different ethnic makeup which makes Guyana a unique country blessed with natural resources. The Dutch were there before the English but we also have our Indigenous people who used to and still live in the Rainforest Regions . A fairly satisfactory summary while not 100% factual- about 15-20% of the Indians who came from the British Raj- India, were Muslims; Muslims and Hindus maintain their faiths up today. Being Guyanese Indian, I know some of the sufferings and the steadfast resilience of Guyanese Indians - most are doggedly progressive; non-violent and follow their religion...Once 50.9 % of the population; it is now 40% or slightly under - due to migration and mixed marriages locally.

Marrying an individual outside your demographic does not mean that you're not racist. Black men tend to hate Indian men and Indian culture but still want to f*ck Indian females. That said, afro Guyanese attempted an exodus and arguably a genocide on Indians. Based on how you speak and your hatred for Indians to embrace their own unique INDO-Guyanese identity, it seems like you still possess this animosity and still see any Indian who wants to maintain their culture and Indian identity, as stubborn outsiders. The British did not uphold their agreement and they were not allowed to return. @@user-sb2wl8zj7f Thanks for enlightening me . I am of Indian origin and what I know about Guyana is by talking to Guyanese Indian in Canada. I didn’t know they were not allowed to go back. No one will even believe that they were not allowed to go back. Former slaves were not given any land and they didn’t want to work on plantation considered slave job. This became big problem everywhere. Ex slaves were never given any land where they worked. Indentured labor did some small time shop keeping. They were frugal and saved money and bought some land. My observation!Their existence was by and large marginal. There was no big time Indoguyanese land lord. Story was same every where . Unfortunately two communities were pitted against each other. Lots of blame game there! Guyana politics was messy too. Cheddi Jagan’s Marxist leaning didn’t help guyana or Indian origin people or Guyana in eye of Cold War politics of West. Also that Jim Jones tragedy made it worst. Looks like Jim Jone was settled to combat or dilute Indian origin majority. Jim jones brought mostly Afro Americans! My own thesis! If I am wrong correct me.
