I'm from Michigan and everyone south of Kansas seems way friendlier but, it comes at a cost because, y'all are also deadlier! With more than 50% of the guns in the US being in Texas and Oklahoma, There are also more mass shootings cause y'all keep letting the wackos get a hold of guns and it's about to get worse! 😭 I want the America I grew up respecting in the 70's and 80's! It was wondrous and we didn't need cell phones and kids played outside! We had problems but, we solved them. How do we deal with Ronnie of Florida destroying knowledge?🤔 Sorry for the long rant. I hope you have a pleasant day!😁

Ya. Having lived in the south for about 8 years now, it gets a bad rep. People like to think it’s full of Jim Crow era rednecks. But it’s not. It’s mostly just decent people trying to live their lives in peace and be kind to others as often as possible. The loud minority of ignorant southerners spoil the perception for people. But I love it here. Everyone has been absolutely lovely in my experience.

Collard Greens are a staple vegetable in the southern US. Its a member of the cabbage family. They are naturally bitter, so you cook them with some vinegar or some hot pepper sauce.

It's Country Gravy (milk/white gravy). If you want to make it here is how: in a pan over medium heat 2 tablespoons of ghee, add two tablespoons of white flour, cook for a couple of minutes to get rid of the flour taste, while whisking slowly pour in 2 cups whole milk, add 1/8 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground pepper, (optional 2 dashes Worcestershire, because you can't taste one but you can taste three), bring to simmer to thicken (taste for salt level). Pour over fried chicken. Note: this is not the gravy for biscuits, there you start by cooking 1/2 pound of breakfast sausage while breaking it into small (1 to 1.5 cm) pieces and browning, check the fat level and remove all but about 2 tablespoons, then proceed with adding flour (no ghee) and the rest (skip the salt but taste for it at the end). Now you have sausage gravy for biscuits. It was baked sweet potato with pecan butter. Yes, the iced tea is usually bottomless and in the south it's Sweet Tea (unless you specify unsweet). The last dessert was Cappucino Ice Cream Pie. The best banana pudding is made like a custard not a pudding, An easy home version uses Jello instant vanilla pudding add one smashed up ripe banana allow to slightly set (about 20 minutes) then layer vanilla wafers, sliced banana, pudding, wafers, banana, pudding, and some rough broken wafers on top and let fully set. Do this in a single serving dessert glass (wide not tall) using mini-vanilla wafers for a great presentation.

I've never seen worcestershire sauce in gravy in my 30 years of life! I'll have to give that a whirl next time. I personally would double both the salt and the pepper for that amount of gravy though.

I'm being honest here guys, collard greens are a leafy green vegetable, but the cook messed up by putting lemon in it. That ruins it. I'm an American gal that grew up in the Mid Atlantic region and I'm a U.S. Army "brat" that's lived all over the States, and overseas. NEVER have i ever seen anyone sane dare put lemon on cooked collard greens. It's already slightly bitter anyway. This is why many people, as my Mom used to, season it well and add garlic, onions, and beef or pork products w/ butter & olive oil too to enhance it. That makes it very tasty. Otherwise, everything else in the video is spot on delicious.

In the USA, there are many types of gravy. In the UK , they are only familiar with brown gravy. Types of gravy depends on the type of meat or stock used. I know some people eat collared greens with hot cherry peppers and chopped raw onion.

Banana pudding has a base of vanilla cookies, then a layer of sliced bananas, then a thick layer of vanilla pudding, then another thick layer of vanilla pudding. At this point some people add a layer of chopped, roasted nuts, either pecans or walnuts or hazelnuts or a combination of nuts for crunch, som e people don't, some people add a layer of mini or regular chocolate chips while some don't. Then the whole thing is finished off with a thick (sometimes decorative) layer of creamy, white whipped cream. Other families finish theirs off with a thick decorative layer of meringue that they cook/brown with a hand held kitchen torch. There are so many old family recipes, many passed down from generation to generation. Some are followed diligently they make their banana pudding from scratch while others think it's ok to take a short cut and use the mix from a little box that you just add milk to and simmer it on the stove while a lot of younger cooks take the most short cuts and buy the kind that you just pour the powder from the little box into a bowl, add cold milk, beat it with a hand mixer and it's done, no cooking needed. At the end of theday they're all forms of banana pudding, it's just how traditional and authentic they want their pudding to be.

Grits are from a specific type of white corn called hominy. Hominy is a large- kernel editor corn used in Indigenous cultures in the Americas. Corn also comes in different types and colors besides yellow or white (blue, red, black, purple, multi-colored, etc.).
@JustMe-dc6ks
@JustMe-dc6ks Жыл бұрын
Hominy corn (hominy for short) is nixtamilized corn. Grits is short for hominy grits. Corn to hominy then dried and coarse ground produces grits which are then cook with stock or milk so that the granules soften and the liquid thickens. For comparison, polenta and cream of wheat would be similar.

Here is a good way to think about sweet potato pie. If you buy a pumpkin at the grocery store, and you bake it and eat some, it will have a certain amount of flavor. If you buy a sweet potato and bake it, you will find it has more flavor than pumpkin has all by itself, without adding anything else for flavor. It stands to reason, then, that sweet potato pie will have lots of amazing flavor to start with.

Every kind of meat will have its own gravy. You will fry your meat which is breaded in seasoned wheat flour. You will leave a few tablespoons of the cooking oil and add some of the seasoned flour and let that cook about a minute. Then most will add milk or milk and water mixture and cook. The flour will thicken it up and you will also season this to taste. This can be chicken, pork, beef we don't really eat goats or sheep where I'm from. Grits are good but the water cooked in has to be salted or grits are horrible. I'm from Georgia and this is real and how most of the waitress treat you. Southern people are very nice and welcoming.

Both country fried steak & chicken fried steak, grits, collards, catfish, & sweet potato pie are staples. Sweet tea or lemonade is pretty much the standard drink. @@freebirdallen I've always been a fan of cobblers over pudding. My Dad and me would go pick peaches or apples (the peaches were best to me) and he'd make cobbler out of them. Or, we'd go blackberry picking and make cobbler out of those, too. He's gone now, but I'll always remember our time in the kitchen together making cobblers. He wasn't a fan of pudding either. Although he did make one heck of a killer chocolate pie, which was essentially baked pudding in a crust. My favorite pudding is actually bread pudding. I like banana cream pies, but they aren't a favorite. They are also made with bananas and vanilla wafers, too. I like bananas, but they are not my favorite fruit. Also, I'm not a fan of vanilla wafers. I've never met a banana pie I didn't like, just not a favorite. Banana pudding - the same.

Catfish isn't a good fish, they eat all the refuse at the bottom. If you grew up poor, particularly in the south, it was an alternate source of protein in times of hardship, just by going to the pond or creek. That's why it's fried, to hide the bad taste. Today, at restaurants, you can only find farm-raised catfish fed grain, but still has a distinctive flavor. It's more nostalgia than a high-class food.

Her voice sounds muffled like she's talking with her hand over her mouth, which clearly she isn't or her microphone is covered up. I've noticed in those videos her earbuds have been hidden under her top. If her microphone is attached to her earbuds maybe could she pull out the microphone so it isn't covered. Please get her a microphone!! It sounds like she’s sitting in a barrel! Can barely hear her! That said ( for the second time ) Sweet potatoes are used in as many ways as regular potatoes - except the sweet potato pie - it is a requirement for Christmas Day lunch at our house - my family doesn’t like pumpkin pie. Southern hospitality is the real deal . . . People at the next table will talk with you, other servers will stop & say hi, if you were at their table on your last visit ( I’m talking locals eating places, regular customers) Grits are great, but need butter, salt & pepper. Okra & corn pudding need some getting used to . . Collard greens, too. Cat fish is great - no bones to worry about, firm texture & takes on the flavor of whatever spices you add ( Old Bay ). Chicken - southern fried “six ways to Sunday” - LOTS of options for flavor & coating. . . Crunchier the better.
