Even if not a single person is there to witness this, or if it's raining, snowing, or whatever the conditions. This ceremony still takes place just as you saw it here.

I saw this changing of the guard yesterday. It is difficult to find the words to describe this awe-inspiring event. Because my father was in the Korean War it meant so much more to me. I highly recommend this, whenever you are in Washington DC.

If you look carefully, the tomb guard has no rank insignia. It would be disrespectful to outrank.

Arlington Cemetary is right next to Reagan National Airport. Planes flying by all the time.

I have lived at 34 addresses all over the world, I have literally been around the world, to include Calvary, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Bethlehem, the Omayyad Mosque, the Wailing Wall, the Dome of the Rock, and the tomb of Salahuddin. I was moved at all of these amazing places. I was fortunate to live in Arlington, Virginia, walking distance from Arlington National Cemetery for a short while, and I visited the cemetery numerous times. In all of the places I've ever been, I've not felt like I was on holier ground than at Arlington National Cemetery.

When you see the Sgt Looking at the weapon and the soldier coming out to guard that is the inspection of the new soldier coming on duty

The average age of the Tomb guards is 22. Every movement is symbolic. "The Tomb Guard marches exactly 21 steps down the black mat behind the Tomb, turns, faces east for 21 seconds, turns and faces north for 21 seconds, then takes 21 steps down the mat and repeats the process. (The number 21 symbolizes the highest military honor that can be bestowed, the 21-gun salute.)" If they don't pass inspection they are sent back down to the bunker and are replaced. They consider that to be a disgrace. There's a whole video on youtube that explains the Tomb of the Unknown Solder and how and why it was created.

Arlington is an amazingly beautiful place, but very somber at the same time. It is a cemetery and Respect and Honor are first and foremost, always.

The sergeant of the guard was inspecting the guard's weapon to make sure it was clean and functional before the guard began his post.

Yeah, I watched a video of a poor guy who was doing it in bad weather, was humid and unsure if rain or not but as of it there was one swipe over his gun then was told to replace it with a clean one after he spent some time there

Having been to Washington DC three times (each time spending a full day at Arlington), those constant flights in and out of Reagan National Airport are just about the only noise one can hear during this ceremony.

Arlington is beautiful. If the audience isnt quiet the guard will yell at them. Also, don't go past the ropes the guard will stop you. The airplane noise is because Washington Dulles International Airport is close. They arent allowed to cross the Potomac River separating Virginia from Washington D.C. D.C. is a no fly zone. As someone already commented check out a video about the history of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the guard.

No, Dulles is further out in Chantilly. It's Reagan Washington National that's close to ANC.
