Veteran actor Farida Jalal, who is best known for her roles in Aradhana, Bobby, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, recently returned to mainstream with ‘Heeramandi’. In a candid and rare interview with India Today’s Bhavna Agarwal, Farida Jalal spoke about her journey and playing supporting character roles. She recalled how she got slotted as an actor but got to show her versatility in projects by Satyajit Ray, Raj Kapoor, and Shyam Benegal. She also praised her bond with YRF and Yash Chopra and why she is hurt by him. Farida, who last appeared in ‘Student of the Year’ in a Dharma film is also upset with Karan Johar. Not just that, her lack of presence on social media and why TV gave her better opportunities, Farida Ji is all hearts. Lastly, she also spoke about losing touch with SRK, Salman Khan and why her attempts to reach them go in vain. Don’t miss.

Faridaji, my name is Abhishek and I have immense respect for you as I have grown up watching your films. You are such a fine actress and I admire you so much. Commanding so much respect, please call a spade a spade. Please don't be protective over Sharmin Sehgal for her sub-optimal acting and expect people to be kind and forgiving just because she is SLB's niece. Please, atleast you of all the people shouldn't be saying this thing that people should be more kind. Why? Would someone self made like a Sajeeda Sheikh for example be tolerated or forgiven if her acting was so poor? She is no nepotism kid and her acting is so fine. It is a bit too rich to say, and ask people to tolerate someone with absolutely zero talent, expressionless, emotionless, rude and arrogant like Sharmin Sehgal. Have you watched her interviews with her other co-actors Faridaji? Please don't lose your own respect by coming to the defence of nepo kids like Sharmin. Please. Be bold to say she could do better. People of India has always rewarded merit and talent with abundant love from North to South, irrespective of the actors being nepo kids or not. Let the best talent win. It is a healthy system. Let's keep it that way, please. Lots of respect to you with all my heart.

Farida ji and Bhavna, even I used to think why did Farida ji not get a chance to become a successful heroine. But being a successful character actor where directors believe you can do anything and everything is no mean feat. Farida ji, continue doing what makes you happy. You are correct in not getting pressurized do be active in social media, or produce movies for yourself, though I admire the conviction of people who know their talents and produce movies to act in them (e.g. Guru Dutt). Producing a film for the sake of art (not money, though money is an essential byproduct for funding the next film) is commendable. But no need to take on the responsibility for production if it is overwhelming.

There are pros and cons both to everything.. i feel like the interviewer just focused on cons of her career-graph for most part of the interview instead of balancing the interview with questions about pros & cons both.. i feel the interviewer did not ask much questions around the pros and what did Farida truly enjoy in her career spanning 5 decades...the fun & good experiences...farida ji generously shared those incidents herself but the host did not ask her those..Farida ji was hinting & trying to shift the conversation to what she enjoyed working on & the host kept coming back to the cons & half-glass empty kind of questions.. Farida jalal herself said in an interview that she was uncomfortable making direct eye-contact with male-heros /male lead actors during romantic scenes..and when i watch bagon mein bahar hai song from Aradhana, in that video from timestamp 1:08 to 1:11 , i can clearly see farida ji's discomfort the way she just rolled her eyes awkwardly to demonstrate shyness but it did not feel like how a confident heroine would enact the shyness..when mumtaz Or sharmila enacts shying-away scenes, you can clearly see how confidently they do it.. i found that missing in farida jalal's acting ( i am talking just in reference to heroine's role) so i feel she was as such more suited for playing supporting-roles...dont know why some people are seeing it all negatively..there are pros and cons to everything... i dont think there is any need to hype up this whole heroine thing vs supportive-roles when it comes to Farida ji.. even when i watch koi-sehri babu song of farida-jalal & mumtaz, in one dance-step where mumtaz and farida ji both place their hands on their waist and head and thumka lagaa rahe hai, i found farida's hand posture and movements a little rigid & closed off while mumtaz's hand posture felt smooth, firm yet free-flowing & open..also i find that farida jalal's back (peeth) is sometimes little bent..she looks naturally like that so even when i see her dances and movies of her young-age, i personally feel that she was/is best suited for character roles and supporting roles & not for heroine roles.. i would not have enjoyed seeing her in a heroine's role so i think i am not at a loss here so all good for me... i am actually glad that film-makers did not cast her as a heroine & casted her in character roles instead..thank goodness...sometimes heroines are forced to do vulgar roles Or vulgar scenes so i am glad that farida jalal stayed away from all that drama and got to live a dignified life doing dignified roles...she never remarried and raised her son single-handedly with all devotion..she appears to be a "chaste" woman...i am glad she stayed away from the filth that comes with becoming a heroine..

Everybody's priorities are different in different phases of life and viewpoint to see things is also different. Many people desire stability and consistency in their career & a steady rise Or promotion instead of drastic/extreme highs & lows...Certainly there is uncertainity at all career-levels & not just at the top-position but extreme highs definitely bring a little more uncertainity with them & also may have the potential to introduce more career-gaps Or a longer career-gaps because after reaching a certain high, you may not be able to accept a role thats below that standard & roles below that high standard might not get offered to you at all even if you are up for it & so you have to then keep waiting for a role of that stature & pay to come-by... Farida Jalal's husband passed away in 2003, she appears to have raised her son / run her house independently since then as she never remarried...at that time, her first priority must have been to run her house & save enough assets/money for herself and her son..what we are seeing on the outside is not the only thing important..their actual life-situations (her getting widowed) also play a huge role in their career-decisions. Also some people like to stay in the same ocean & explore untouched/never seen parts of that same ocean instead of moving onto another ocean..some people are very deep and like to explore each single part of a thing until there is literally nothing left of it. I think avinash from bollywood bubble asked this heroine thing only once to farida jalal & that too very subtly and gently which was respectful but here this host asked this same question twice in this video which did not sound respectful.. Even after farida ji already answered her once about the heroine question that heroine sirf ped ke piche naachti rehti thi & in contrast she(farida) got to do different character's role in different film so she was happy, the host here asked & emphasized the same heroine question again which did not sound/feel very nice & respectful to watch/hear (atleast to me)...some people see career just as a way to fulfill/financially support their other life-interests Or hobbies or are financially supporting their families..beyond that, they dont breathe & sleep career day & nighht... it does not mean they are less successful...since she had to raise her son single handedly, she did not have the luxury to deny character roles that were being offered to her & wait for that one dream role Or a heroine role Or eventually she might have stopped desiring the heroine role. Simply put, some people like monotonous/mechanical work so that they have some energy left to focus on home-situations Or other things in life instead of just career/job draining all of their energy..some people just like to have stability in their career so that they can live a little more planned, predictable, relaxed & well-balanced life...just because we don't see & know about farida ji's other skills (that are not related to her profession/acting), does not mean she does not have any other life-interests outside of acting..actors also have life outside of acting..Farida ji has worked non-stop like a machine and still continues to do so..her energy is commendable...asking her repeatedly about why she did not get heroine roles is a little disrespectful ( in my opinion ).

I enjoyed the bollywood bubble's (host avinash's) calm and composed interview of farida jalal more than this one..this one is too loud and gossipy for me personally... i dont enjoy gossips & dramatic discussions like these so this interview is probably not my cup of tea.. i personally got very negative vibes from this interview... instead of asking farida ji more about her acting craft and how she prepared for her roles Or what all efforts (acting/her craft related) she had to put in for her roles Or asking her about any fun-incidents on sets & her shooting related experiences would have been more light-hearted and fun to watch (atleast for me personally)..heavy-duty & dramatic/gossip kind of discussions about why she stopped getting work from certain production-houses & why she did not gets phone-calls from certain people etc type of interviews are probably not for me..each to his own..but this host seriously needs to learn from siddharth kannan and Avinash pal on how to ask questions in a calm & composed manner... in an attempt to look natural, the host appears to be all over the place & very loud...other people might like it, not my cup of tea though...huh..asking actors about their challenges can also be done in a positive & subtle way... i appreciate farida Jalal's honest & unfiltered answers but the way the host phrased the questions personally gave me very negative vibes..

Also that shifting loyalty thing is prevalent in other professions also & not just acting...centering most of the interview questions around this same hurtful topic sounds very toxic...the interview-creator or maker Or host needs to lighten up..

13:35 aapne to hamesha chhakke pe chhakka hi maaraa hai Lol as if it's that easy to remain consistent in character roles...Farida ji ki mehnat ki vajah se baahar se hume easy lagtaa hai...if becoming a heroine is not easy, to maintain a high in the department of character roles and consistently sixer pe sixer maarte rehna is not that easy either....everybody does not have it in them to remain consistent, that's a big quality there which is praiseworthy in itself...asking farida ji about the milestone thing once is fine but stretching it further by comparing her career to Rajesh-khanna stardom & career-graph especially by the "host" does not sound too nice...the host finally understood farida ji's viewpoint at 32:52 whew...Mala sinha was one of the contemporaries of Farida Jalal..she achieved top-position in the industry but stopped working in hindi films in 1994 & in bengali films in 2000 and she ended her journey by doing some character-roles before retiring permanently.. it appears that farida jalal has certainly worked more than Mala Sinha..As farida ji emphasized the "heroine" tag/thing does not really matter...
