Madras - derived from 'Madrasapattinam' a tamil fishing village which thrived centuries before the entry of British is certainly not an European or English name. It's a tamil name while chennai derived from 'chennapattnam' is actually a telugu name, chenna means good or fair in telugu while there is no word called chennai in tamil lexicon. The city name should be reversed back to Madras & correct the historical mistake. The name 'Madras' is dying & fading away with year after year as most of us referring it to as chennai. Kindly start an online platform to bring people together for the name change. #backtoMadras.

@@prakaashj5485 It's Muthurajapattinam or Muthurasapattinam and due to the native slang it would have been pronounced Muthraspattinam and finally to Madraspattinam. Pearl diving is considered a very old industry dating back to the earlier Pandiyan kingdom and the name 'Muthu Raja Pattinam' would have come. The place too is an important trade port earlier for precious stones, pearls, etc.

But, a stone inscription dating back to 14th century found in peneeswaramadam at Krishnagiri clearly marks the name 'Madarasapattinam'' a coastal town conquered by a telugu king. You can see in the internet. This clearly indicates that, a tamil fishing village by that name existed centuries before the entry of British. So, Madras can't be of English or European origin.
