And I went to the doctor, I went to the mountains
I looked to the children, I drank from the fountains
There's more than one answer to these questions
Pointing me in a crooked line
And the less I seek my source for some definitive
(The less I seek my source)
Closer I am to fine, yeah
Closer I am to fine, yeah

I will never forget sometime in the early 90s my grandmother came home and told me The Indigo girls came to her Senior Center in CT and did a small show for the community of old folks that day. She was so excited to tell me about it..... At the time, I thought "big deal".... Now 21 years after she has passed, hearing this song is bringing fond memories.... The point I wanted to make was that these girls were on the verge of Stardom at that point, however, made time to stop in to a community senior center and do a free show.... That right there says alot about the people they are.

I had this happen ONE time in my life and I stupidly quit singing after. It's like dropping fast in an elevator....you wanna stop and say something, but you'd lose the moment. Then you both smile as you're singing.....cuz you know you're knocking it out of the park. Talent is a mix of perspiration and being in the right place at the right time. Yet, I've met people on the street who could out-perform the best popular artists out there. Some things just are the way they are........

An odd couple of sorts, my friend and I met 20 years ago at karaoke. I'm a white male he's a black male. He heard me sing, I heard him sing, and somehow we decided to start making "duets" out of hard rock songs. We would come up with ridiculous harmonies that weren't in the original songs and people went nuts!!! We both were students of music, so we understood keys and scales, and we just fed off each other... No performance was ever the same, we just improvised...

As a queer person, this song has been an anthem for me since my days coping with and then recovering from attending a Christian college. I just saw the Barbie movie in Argentina with my fiance. Thank you Greta, and thank you to Indigo Girls for writing one of the best, most therapeutic and healing songs ever. Legends forever.

My experience with this song was very similar! I also was cooing with all the bullying & homophobia (got called a Dyke when I was F-12 years old). My dad actually introduced me to this song and it’s something that not only makes me feel connected to him, but also to myself. I’ve been a fan of this song since before I even knew I was gay, and it’s gotten me through so many stages in my life! Might have started happy crying when I saw Barbie singing along to this song for the first time. Not to mention, I only had Barbies as a kid, Ken’s were beneath me, and my Barbies would date & get married constantly. In ✨hetrospect✨, I think that was a bit of a clue 🔎 😂🌈

I think I was a late comer to this song, the first memory I have about hearing this song was in grade 9 (1994) art class. It was a rainy, gloomy fall morning in a cinderblock room lit by unshaded florescent lights, and floating through the air amidst the smell of water color paint was this song played on an old 1980s boom box. I feel simultaneously old and young now lol

Yeah. The 20 years since the 90s have really kicked my ass. Not that I was particularly happy back then, either. But I had a lot of hope for turning things around once I got the hell out of Dodge. And the fact is, I was still a better version of myself than now. However, mental health treatment back then was very primitive compared to today (if you can pay! - which, the one great blessing I have, is I can). And I couldn't really start to get better until the last few years or so.

As a guy who worked in psych hospitals for my first 20 years of adult life, before becoming a teacher (for another 20 years now), I would suggest that you quit firing therapists. Yes, there are a lot of mediocre ones out there, but chances are, at least one of them was a good one. My experience has been that the more right they are, the less you like them. In your case it is your own perception of everything that is drastically colored by powerful emotions, making you think that things are true that are not. You must learn to trust a close circle of friends (yes, they are the people who have tried to tell you this). You must trust them more than your own perception. You must learn to catch yourself before launching into emotional overdrive tirades.
@Raven-yj5pp

@@Logan-wv8qf you're the first thumbs down I've ever given. Apparently you don't like to listen to other people's truth. Many times too much of this contributes to a disorder. The black and white of it all. Therapists stop listening to their clients, if ever they did in the first place. They start listening to other doctors and forget, completely about listening to the person that is affected most by them. I really wonder sometimes who is actually f*****d up? A person gets up the nerve to finally fire a crappy therapist and someone, without knowing the circumstances and thinking they have some authority, throws an absolute at it. Maybe you should listen to the music and stop judging. If the music isn't therapeutic for you.... Maybe you should go get some therapy!!!! Stop ruining it for other people... Dick!!!!! Get it straight!!!!!!

@@Raven-yj5pp Wow, ok then. Hey I’m just offering 25 years of experience with many, many, people experiencing bi-polar disorder. I will try to break it down for you, with compassion. Maybe you will be able to help someone. Being bi-polar means having “changing brain chemistry.” All of our perceptions of the world are based on that brain chemistry (which for most of us is “non-changing.” If I am bi-polar, and my brain chemistry begins to change, the change is so subtle that I will not be aware of the change. That means my perception of everything and everyone around me is quietly, subtly changing too (without my awareness). My judgement is changing, without my awareness. I will not notice my slowly increasing change in perception and slow loss of judgement. It will all look normal to me. My family and friends will begin to see the changes first. They are seeing my degraded judgement in my attitudes and actions, from outside of me. If they can catch me and connect me with treatment early enough, with help, I can get medication to bring my brain chemistry back to the normal range. Left unchecked, my perception and judgement begins to rapidly erode and I become increasingly irrational, with no awareness of my loss of judgement. This could have potentially disastrous social, relationship, financial and even legal consequences. I see many bi-polar people in prison, connected to things they did while their judgement was gone. That’s why having a therapist and friends and family, who will tell you what you need to hear, and insist that you take action immediately, is critical, whether you want to hear it or not. As my judgement erodes, l will have a tendency to reject therapists and/or family and friends who are giving me honest and important feedback about how I am actually degrading in judgement (as they can see it in my increasing hostility and rejection of feedback). As I lose more judgement, I will become increasingly angry, and hostile, with anyone who tries to give me feedback that disagrees with my “altered perception.” Eventually, as my brain chemistry continues to shift, I completely lose touch with reality, possibly leading to a forced hospitalization (5150), or possibly an arrest. There you go, 25 years experience, no charge, friend.

Lyrics: I'm trying to tell you something about my life Maybe give me insight between black and white And the best thing you've ever done for me Is to help me take my life less seriously It's only life after all Yeah Well darkness has a hunger that's insatiable And lightness has a call that's hard to hear I wrap my fear around me like a blanket I sailed my ship of safety till I sank it I'm crawling on your shores I went to the doctor, I went to the mountains I looked to the children, I drank from the fountains There's more than one answer to these questions Pointing me in a crooked line And the less I seek my source for some definitive (the less I seek my source) The closer I am to fine The closer I am to fine And I went to see the doctor of philosophy With a poster of Rasputin and a beard down to his knee He never did marry or see a B-grade movie He graded my performance, he said he could see through me I spent four years prostrate to the higher mind Got my paper and I was free I went to the doctor, I went to the mountains I looked to the children, I drank from the fountains There's more than one answer to these questions Pointing me in a crooked line The less I seek my source for some definitive (The less I seek my source) The closer I am to fine The closer I am to fine I stopped by the bar at 3 a.m. To seek solace in a bottle or possibly a friend And I woke up with a headache like my head against a board Twice as cloudy as Id been the night before And I went in seeking clarity. I went to the doctor, I went to the mountains I looked to the children, I drank from the fountains Yeah we go to the doctor, we go to the mountains We look to the children, we drink from the fountains Yeah we go to the bible, we go through the workout We read up on revival and we stand up for the lookout Theres more than one answer to these questions Pointing me in a crooked line The less I seek my source for some definitive (The less I seek my source) The closer I am to fine The closer I am to fine The closer I am to fine

This song is simply a masterpiece of music. Upbeat from the first strum. Beautiful voices. Lyrics that stay with you. Every groove and rhythm ... and every time they diverge ever so slightly from what they quickly conditioned you to expect next. This one, and the rest of this album/CD, hit me at a time in college when I was just realizing that music can be more and other than "just" classical or pop/rock. There aren't many songs where I remember where I was when I first heard it, but this was arresting enough to be one of those few. And I've never been particularly religious, but that never mattered between me and this music -- with these "girls," I don't have to have read The Bible to sing about it, or Heaven, or Canaan. Now, almost 30 years later, I still cannot hear the end of this song without expecting the next (Secure Yourself) and the next (Kid Fears) in CD order. And when I first heard Micheal Stipe's oh so distinctive R.E.M. voice -- one of the highlights of my high school years -- seemingly creep out of the shadows of my boom box in the emotion-laden Kid Fears, I swear I almost lost bladder control. And just listening to this song on YT now, I got all over body chills/pins&needles/goosebumps ... twice ... which never happens to me in the first place. This song teleports me to many places across time and space, and I will never be able to thank Emily and Amy (and all the people who put this recording together) enough for voicing the music in them and sharing it with all of us.

Their songwriting, harmonies and overall musicianship are just outstanding! And how many of us have been carried through some bad days or rough times, or just soundtracks and backgrounds for fun times as well because of their beautiful songs? 🤗💗🥰

This was one of my favorite songs in high school and college.... listening to it now in my 50s is hits harder. What a great song.

Indigo Girls reminded everyone that guitar and harmony are awesome. Metal ruled in the 80's, Madonna was killing it, then these girls came out and did this. It was great stuff and still sounds great all these years later. One of my all-time favs. Also one of the only cover songs I (try) to play. That harmony melts my soul. Bravo girls. Maybe I need to go check you out when (if) you come around next. I missed you with Lilith Fair and have always regretted it - what a lineup that was.

2021 and this song is still as much an anthem for me as the day it burst on the scene. Love these ladies - they got me through one of the hardest times of my life and are still doing so today.
