Wear a glove or otherwise protect your support hand, I barely ever cut my support hand, but had an erratic flake cut me to the bone using this technique.

Your terminology needs work. "Blow thru this area" . How about reduce this mass, or use a bifacial reduction process removing this excess stone. " Blow right thru this area" just doesn't sound right. Also, if you prepare a platform carefully you can remove mass thru percussion using the correctly weighted hammer stone or antler. It's an excuse to be say you can only use indirect percussion to remove mass. It's due to a lack of knowledge & skill required when using direct percussion to remove mass from a stone.
