Just in case you have a continued interest in this type of game, the combat that you described as Final Fantasy-esque is actually derivative of the combat system of the original Valkyrie Profile on PS1. Actually, it's EXACTLY like VP. Valkyrie Profile, in my opinion, was a near perfect JRPG. Combat mechanics, story, characters and character development, art direction...all-and-all, a true masterwork. If you've never played it, you're doing yourself a disservice. It was released digitally on the PS store back in the PS3 era and it got a physical re-release on the Vita when it was still a thing under the name Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth. So it should be VERY easy to get your hands on a copy. Please check it out if you get a chance. It's a game that deserves love and attention lest it be forgotten. And that would simply be a crime.

@escapist Sorry for the long post I don't usually write so much, but i think what i need to say is valid here and i sincerely hope you can give it a read :). I just want to say mad respect and wanted to ask if you have played fighting games and learning legitimate combos before? The reason i ask is because i have and im a fucking huge fighting game nerd. That being said, the large number of characters and different variety of moves and the different combos you can do is incredibly refreshing to me. People keep saying that it's just mashing and it's not too fun and the fighting is not too good, but i beg to differ. Since the turns pause when you start doing an attack and enemies cant interrupt, there is absolutely no downside to taking your sweet ass time with your turn and linking different attacks into others, that being said i love to take my time and use every characters different attacks and link them into each other and with so many different characters and moves there's a lot of different combos you can do, not to mention some characters have level 1 2 and 3 specific supers. If you're getting bored, switch the character and try others with different moves. There are so many different possibilities for combos with different character combinations. I can see if the game gets boring if you kinda just press attacks as soon as someone has a turn and just do stuff (which im not saying you're doing that just saying some people do) but the game is meant to be played by doing combos and different stuff, like launch with Ajna into some projectiles from another character, into two more ajna hits into 2 hits with dhar and another launcher into razmi 2 hits and level 3 special for example. The game is cool when you try to explore different combinations and try all the different moves and i think it really shines when you try ALL the characters to see who synergizes with who. Thanks.

And you do so by ignoring three quarters of the side plots and set ups because you have to rush through all the action stuff that's been looming in the horizon for 6 seasons but must happen in order for the series to end. That's GoT seasons 7 & 8 and that's ignoring all the smaller complaints like lazy dialogue, even lazier editing (how many scenes ended with something interesting being said then simply cutting to the next scene with no conclusion to the scene?), boring CGI scenes, plot armors and characters teleporting. Usually shows go on too long for their own good. It's kinda rare to have the opposite happen but they managed to pull it off.

That idea of just treating an overt enemy as a "tagalong character" aiming for further "backstory development" reminds me a lot of Danganronpa 2, with the real killer of the first case who plays his Get Out of Death Free card through technicalities, and their murderous impulses are just gradually forgotten about until much later. Game idea. RPG where the main character has multiple personality disorder. They would do specific attacks and use different weapons depending on the personality. Judging by this review, the combat sounds just like Tales of Berseria - At first mashing out real-time moves mapped to the four face buttons is lots of fun, but after the novelty wears off the lack of depth makes it feel repetitive and also everything just plain takes too many hits to kill.
@jacobschott6955
@jacobschott6955 2 жыл бұрын
Takes of Berseria at least doesn’t make you waffle around with dozens of different possible characters who all have descriptions that don’t go into nearly enough depth to build combos unless you’ve tested them rigorously beforehand. Having played both games, let me tell you that I massively prefer Berseria’s combat system. There’s some imbalance knocking around, sure, but it’s simple enough to get the hang of and it’s got decent style, and you can knock the difficulty down if you’re having trouble. Side note; Tales of Arise presents an interesting solution to the ‘enemies have too many hit points’ problem by making the special attacks you can trigger after draining an opponent’s stamina bar instantly kill them, which rewards you for learning how to string together combos really well. Also, it’s actually somewhat less depressing and edgy than Berseria’s plot despite its primary narrative theme being slavery. I highly recommend it.
@Alloveck
@Alloveck 2 жыл бұрын
@@jacobschott6955 Well, maybe I should give Tales of Arise another look. After being annoyed by how overly damage spongey all the enemies in Berseria were, I wasn't exactly excited for more of that. Otherwise, I was okay with Berseria's gloomy plot and like the anime style, but seriously, those needlessly long, button mashing battle wore on me. Battles weren't even hard, just so unnecessarily long. Those instant kills you mentioned might be a good solution, depends on just how long it takes to drain enemy stamina in the first place. And general jRPG experience leads me to doubt they'd work on bosses, who are of course the spongiest of damage sponges.
@jacobschott6955
@jacobschott6955 2 жыл бұрын
@@Alloveck Generally, yes, but they deal an immense amount of damage and briefly stun the boss. And some bosses have special sequences where if you use the right character’s interrupt-move at the right time it plays a unique animation that does the same thing. As for how long it takes to break stamina… well, that depends. Obviously bigger enemies tend to be harder to break, but there’s also the consideration that in early-game you don’t have access to the Artes or stat upgrades that make chaining together long combos easier. Still, it’s not really that hard once you get the hang of it, and the animations are nice and snappy while feeling appropriately powerful. I won’t claim it’s a perfect game, it’s got a few frustration points that stuck in my mind, but it’s really good as Tales games - or action RPGs in general - go.
@Alloveck
@Alloveck 2 жыл бұрын
@@jacobschott6955 The key question for stamina break time is whether it's noticeably faster to break stamina and insta-kill in Arise than simply whittling down HP the old fashioned way in Berseria. Based on my limited experience with such systems, it usually seems like stamina-drain criticals are a different strategy rather than a faster strategy.
@jacobschott6955
@jacobschott6955 2 жыл бұрын
@@Alloveck Eh, like I said, it takes some time to get used to the stamina-break system and build your character combo understanding to do it well. But then it also takes some time for enemies to get strong enough to become damage-spongey… Just discussing it isn’t really enough to measure that for yourself, though. Watch a gameplay video or two, I say. But if you liked Berseria aside from the frustration around its enemies getting too damage-spongey and the combat getting too repetitive, then you’ll most likely enjoy Arise.
