In this episode I travel to the horrible city of Wamena, deep in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia and have the pleasure of getting robbed by a machete-wielding local. This is the base for exploring the Baliem Valley, in Papua, Indonesia, so you will unfortunately need to stay here to pick up your permits, supplies, guide, and penis gourds before visiting the villages (a much more rewarding experience).
I highly recommend this accommodation: Pintu Biru Hostel +6282347838777
Thank you for watching and subscribe to join me on my adventures!

So sorry that you were robbed. Thank you for showing us Wamena, though. So interesting to see noken bags and pigs all over the place. It's really different from other parts of Indonesia.

Yes it really is a whole different side of the country! Just proves how diverse Indonesia is. Yeah I wouldn't walk around Wamena at night alone and definitely not around guys with machetes haha.

As a regular traveller to West Papua, I was actually planning a hangout trip to Wamena during my next travels to Papua, I wanted to visit Lorentz National Park and it seemed as a good starting point. I usually travel to the BirdsHead Seascape, Raja Ampat, so during my trip there next time I wanted Wamena to be a side trip but I am now deeply discouraged and as the other guy commented, I will also remove it from my list. Too bad, I will just lay in the water with sand between my toes next time. No hiking it seems 😅. The place sounds as horrible as neighbouring Papua New Guinea which has a terrible crime rate. Omg bro glad your fine now. I had such a different experience during my travels to Sorong, and it’s not touristy at all. It’s an extremely authentic experience.

Lorentz is okay, I found it a little too dangerous at the time to do any more than just a quick day trip (there was a terrorist attack the week before I went). Yes Wamena is horrible, but... it's really an unforgettable experience doing the trek to the villages in Baliem Valley if you haven't done it yet, that is very safe and one of the best, if not the best, experience I've had in my various trips to Indonesia! You could also do Korowai, very different but I've heard also incredible. I also loved Raja Ampat though too, I could have easily spent the extra week there 😉 Both are good options, have a great time!

@@travelwithtrexpat Thank you for your reply! I usually come to West Papua for snorkelling, it’s been my third time in Indonesia this year and with my flex time job I will be soon other two months in Raja Ampat. Coming back next month, I will stay for the winter… I was thinking to visit Lorentz at some point if I get the chance… it’s been on the top of my list since I was school age, but now that I can … I am not going since I cannot find ANY information about the place, as well as any infrastructure… no airport, accommodation facility to make lodging possible. So I am still scratching my head thinking how I could hang out in Lorentz. I wanted to kayak or explore by foot one of the rivers of the national park. You say you have been to Lorentz? How did you arrange?

@@marco1324661 Haha good luck getting any info ahead of time. I had to arrange everything on the ground in Wamena, and there is only the slowest of internet there so trying to contact people on WhatsApp is not practical. Also if you need internet to work, you won't be able to. I found the national park itself to be kind of underwhelming and I would recommend you just do day trips from Wamena because it's dangerous in those hills.

Hey, I’m sorry about what happened to you. You took it well all things considered. Did you report him to the police? Hopefully there was some sort of a silver lining about your trip somehow. Wamena is going to be the capital of its own province, so I hope things will get better for both locals and visitors. Cheers!

Thank you. No I didn't, I figure they won't catch him and I would probably be sitting at the station for hours. Interesting, I didn't hear that about Wamena, yes hopefully it gets better hehe. Maybe some internet access too 😶

How to reach tribal areas on public transport
@travelwithtrexpat

There are vans that leave when full from the main pig market to different places along the valley, making stops at the roads leading to the villages or wherever you tell them. I wouldn't really rely on them though, you can also hire a taxi to take you, wait, and take you back. Getting to the Baliem Valley I couldn't find any public transport (although they recently built a big road there and was just opening when I went, so maybe there are some trucks taking people there now).

Hahahahahahaha I don't blame you. That being said, the trek is one of the top travel experiences I've had, and there's really no other option than to stay in Wamena to organize it unfortunately.
