They use scrap metal, tree branches, anything they can get their hands on to create one-of-a-kind vehicles. Rebel Riders love expressing their individuality through their unique rides. They also enjoy being part of a community full of people who support one another and share a passion for exploring their beautiful country.

Man, Vespa brotherhood in Indonesia is on another level. I've ever borrowed my friend's Vespa for a day, then it was an issue with the engine, within 15 minutes at least 5 Vespa bikers helped me, total strangers. We spent 2 hours to fix it. It feels amazing.

Flip flop/sandals are a very common thing for us. Even the richest people in our country wore flip flop almost everywhere. If it broke or there's a hole in it you can go to almost every convenience store and get a pair for very cheap. I saw a lot of expatriates/foreigners who live for a long time in Indonesia start adopting the flip flop-clover cigarette-cheapass coffee combo like locals

and that really happens, my vespa broke down on the road, then one by one the vespa riders stopped to repair it, this happened five times, when the repair was unsuccessful, the last vespa rider offered to push my vespa with his foot until it arrived at the destination.

I actually have a friend that reach the western tip of Indonesia, up there in sumatera island, using this kind of thing. He did it like in 6 months journey. I don't even know how many times his extreme Vespa broke down. But yeah this kind of lifestyle is common here, I mean, where else you can find some happiness unless you go out and find it yourself.

I'm from Indonesia and I know this kind of lifestyle, 10 years ago when I still in high school I used to ride Vespa to school And if something happen to my Vespa while I'm still in the road, some random Vespa rider will automatically help me, even if we didn't know each other before. Dewandaru Triguna can confirm. I'm one of them: using vespa bodong as my daily for 7+ years. Once I got stopped by an officer, they just asked my destination. No I don't have the mandatory license (SIM C).

We also call them 'junk vespa', they have a large community here and there still a lot of people riding classic vespa from 60's n 70's for the aesthetic value. You can get a 1986 vespa super here for as low as $450 (depends on the condition)

Where you get your cars at 4k we got ours at usually 12k and thats like a compact cars, but motorcycle is very common here unlike in the states which compensate alot for day to day traveling, our uber(we call the grabs) cost litterally 5$ tops to travel from one edge of jakarta to the other on motorcycle

To be honest, these vespas can get really annoying sometimes. Also it's dangerous because the vespas are very short and drivers often can't see them. But still, i take picture of them sometimes.

@Jack _ We don't. Indonesians have their own way of calling a motorcycle, usually based on the type of transmission it has. 1. "Motor Bebek" Very basic and common motorcycle, with semi-automatic transmission (not always, there are some with fully manual transmision) 2. "Motor Matic/Metik" Fully automatic transmission motorcycles, also very common. It has more features (and different design) than a typical "Motor Bebek". 3. "Motor Kopling" or "Motor Laki" A budget manual transmission motorcycle with small cubicles (under 250 cc) 4. "Moge/Motor Gede" Very expensive manual transmission motorcycles with large cubicles (more than 250 cc). 5. (Exception) "Vespa" Manual or automatic transmission, old or new, slow or fast, if it's a Vespa, we just call it "Vespa".

Extreme Vespa is an underground vespa community, they rarely ride their extremely modified vespa during daytime because the police would catch them and their vespa would get destroyed.

We used to have wooden jeepnys too here in indonesia back in the 50's to 70's called oplets although they're mainly made out of Morris minor sedans instead of Jeep's, but local regulations banned this back in 1979 and they've been replaced by angkots which are basically the same thing but they're made of steel and are inspected yearly by the government. The newer angkots are usually made out of Isuzu Panthers or Mitsubishi L300s.

When you have an extremely niche community with a very long history where most of the members dedicate their life for the lifestyle of the said community extreme solidarity is just given.

My Supra Ceper motorcycle lights are off, the journey is still far and the night is getting darker. I can only see the road using the left turn signal. But suddenly there was a motorbike that kept following me behind. I slowed down, but he also slowed down. He continued to follow me and gave me light with his motorcycle headlight. I turned my motorbike to the gas station hoping he would follow me. But he kept going and waving his hand. I saw him using an old Vespa with round headlights. I spent the night at the gas station prayer room and hit the road again next morning. I also often hear from my friends about Vespa boys who often help motorcyclists who breakdown on the road.
