Indonesian football stampede: Should the police have used tear gas?

Police used tear gas to disperse football fans storming a pitch in Malang, Indonesia, on Saturday (Oct 1), triggering a stampede that killed at least 125 people. Professor Hans Westerbeek, from the International Sport Business department at Victoria University, comments on the use of tear gas at the stadium, in this interview on CNA’s Asia First.

The perpetrator should be arrested, the involved police should be questioned, and probably sanctioned. They should NEVER launch tear gas in a densely crowded area because asphyxiation + toxicity = death. They launched the tear gas in the tribune seats, which made it worse because not all viewers were involved with the anarchy.

very sad indeed, very sad when a sport game that should entertain audience becomes such a death trap, we never learn to be careful, to provide for safety in stadiums mass crowded reunions and enjoy a harmless sport competition, very sad indeed

When you put two teams against each other their is seldom issue . However doing so in football for whatever reason always invokes tribal rivalry bad behaviour and violence , often fuelled by alcohol and drugs ....

If Football game sport was hosted in Australia Melbourne , Brisbane , Sydney and Singapore it will be better handled and managed incoming guest capacity ,health safety etc.

This happened all the time whenever Arema clashes with Persebaya. The supporters occupying the streets. I have to buy soccer team stickers placed on dashboard, otherwise my car will be the victim. I feel not safe to go out when they are out. Common....Malang and Surabaya only 100km apart. I hope this culture will end soon. Lets watch soccer match without fighting.
