This story would have been a LOT more believable and less "shoe-horned in" if Asura was given the title of 6 Paths Sage only to realize that humanity was using nijutsu to fight instead of unify WITHOUT Indra's influence. If Indra had NO input on humanity using chakra for war, Asura would have gone to his brother and plead for help. Indra would refuse, saying "mankind cannot find peace on the path father laid out for them. I have realised he created the tailed beasts as an anchor to this world so he could never truly die. He continues to influence this world from beyond the grave and the ninja system he put in place is meant to protect the anchors to this world. He did this ALL for himself, just like his mother." Asura would be furious and kill Indra, causing his sons to kill Asura once he broke down and realised what he had done, and thus begins the Senju/Uchiha war. Kishmoto wanted to lay the ENTIRE world's evils on the Uchiha clan, like they were evil by nature, but all he had to do was admit that humans are EASILY corruptible and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
