Quick note! The number one mistake people make with this technique is that they are too judgmental of the work and overly concerned with getting a good outcome. Eventually, you will start to see some interesting shapes, shadows and patterns. It's just like when you look up at the sky and see shapes or faces in clouds. Just start scribbling and don't worry about the quality. In order to be creative, you need to be in a relaxed state. Only judge the quality of the concepts after you're finished sketching...not while you're sketching.

That's cool, it reminds me of the techniques used in star wars to design the ships. They'd draw insperation from everyday objects and copy the shapes/composition (Tie fighters are ties, slave one's a lamp post, millennium falcon is a hamburger, ect).

Great observation. This is a common technique in concept art. Concept artists rely on coming up with wild and strange designs, and these methods help to achieve that end.

I'm a 3D artist and I do more of an abstract type of work, nothing really industrial-design-related. However, I absolutely love the look and feel of industrial design renders and I was looking for some material to get a better understanding of how the conceptualization process of a product works. Even though the media and the techniques I use are different (I sketch my work in 3D using VR and then recreate the cleaner version in different 3D softwares), this video in particular was very very helpful to get past the creative block and the fear of making mistakes! I guess for those who, like me, struggle with this type of fear, a good idea might be to force yourself to sketch as many designs as possible in a certain amount of time, giving yourself, for example, a 5 minute margin for every sketch. Even if nothing good enough comes up as a result - you'll gain confidence and train yourself to be as bold as possible. The paper folding and the assembling of different objects - absolutely brilliant. Thanks a lot!

Thank you for sharing your process! I appreciate it very much. In terms of ID style sketches, Spencer Nugent has a great channel on how to draw in that style

Another great video John. I appreciate how you breakdown the ideas while drawing so that the results of what you are saying are repeating visually in the video. Being able to narrate while sketching in real time (like in a class demo) is hard to do. I think it helps that you are a musician as well hearing the beat of your presentations. One other tool as part of these abstraction sketches is to change material constructs. Many ID professionals sketch with "injection moldation fixation" as a pretext for how everything will be made. Try sketching ideas for things made totally of glass, wood, leaves of trees, toothpicks. Sketch headphones made of suspended smoke.

@raffi minasian Thank you! I actually want to do a video on pacing/tempo and how it relates to industrial design. The speed at which you sketch is one of the determining factors in the conceptual output....it's just like a violinist who uses long motions with their right hand versus short, precise motions. Most students try to go for precision (a la Heifetz) using very deliberate and measured movements. But they're not Heifetz. The result is unfavorable. It has a major effect on the sketch quality as well as the actual concept itself. This is one area that is completely overlooked in drawing technique and design theory. There's also the pacing or tempo of the project on the whole. You want to peak at the right time. If you peak too early, the project loses momentum. If you peak too late, the ideas cannot be implemented into the final design. I'm going to do another video about other sources of inspiration. I think that changing material constructs is a very good idea!

Such a great technique 👍 Learned a lot today. I guess it holds some relevance with Torrance test of creativity. Like how can we complete an partial picture and create something out of it.
