Hemp, a long banned crop in the US, has great potential for North Carolina agriculture. Like the peanut, hemp has many uses in food and manufacturing.
During a twenty-five year business career, he has worked for two organizations; a Fortune 50 consumer financial services company and a mid-market e-commerce specialty retailer.
Jack’s work has been at the intersection of marketing, technology, e- commerce, strategy, corporate leadership, and both for-profit and non-profit board service.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

You expressed my personal feeling exactly. I am as old as you, or at least close and know what your saying there, there still is hope. I have to wonder when this catches on and the general population realizes they have been lied too by their government are they going to make, what I call the "Santa Claus" leap and ask themselves the same that a young child does, what else are they lying about?

I hope we finally get our regulatory environment regarding hemp straightened out. It looks like its a more profitable cash crop than tobacco, especially when the lower resources are considered. Hemp doesn't need as much water or soil amendments as tobacco, which will save farmers money per acre. Also, more of the plant is usable compared to tobacco, reducing waste. And for those nay-sayers out there who complain that the hemp plant is indistinguishable from marijuana, I think there is an easy and elegant solution: legalize both and stop worrying about which plant is which. We have elected allegedly intelligent people to various state and federal offices, so drafting legislation to legalize marijuana and hemp, as well as developing appropriate controls for marijuana, should be possible.

Let’s go America ! Better get in now. When California was going through prop 215 for recreational there were more Chinese investors taking notes sitting in the room during some of these meetings of state and city/county guidelines for cultivation/ transportation/ lab permit for processing & testing. I was intrigued. The funny thing is I also brought a China Man with my wife and I to one of these functions. I think he was as less shocked as I was to see who actually showed up in numbers. He later shared some information with me that just confirmed I was at the right place at the right time and was where I was suppose to be. The man I/ we invited was very interesting. Very educated and successful CEO of a manufacturing company in China. among some other business will get into that later . Anyway this guy way out of my league so at first I was being cautious of being myself but once we broke the ice I felt more comfortable because I felt he was being very receptive. After the city meeting we went to lunch and I had to ask where he thought the best Chinese place to eat was where we lived in Temecula California home to So. Cals wineries. Anyways if you made it this far and would like me to keep continuing with one of my many experiences just say so and thanks for reading. First time I have ever typed this out or even shared it and was kind of therapeutic . Peace and love

Congratulations, very good explanation. I have an observation though, THC is NOT toxic, its the most, anti-cancer compound found in nature. It brings homeostasis to the whole body from the endocannabinoid system located in our central nervous system, CBD has its own medical values but not as strong as THC (im a psychologist and researcher)

I've seen several TED talks about industrial hemp, and I have to comment that this is the best one yet. Very clear and concise data presented. I really hope more people become passionate about making America the number one industrial hemp producer and innovator, but we're so behind in comparison to other nations. This is such a great opportunity to revitalize our production/manufacturing industry.

Good presentation. However, he was incorrect when speaking about CBD. The medicinal components of hemp called cannabinoids, (better known as CBD), do NOT come from the oil of the SEEDS. They are found in the trichomes or crystals of the FLOWER, which are then extracted to produce what is known as CBD oil (often called HEMP OIL). This is very different than HEMP SEED OIL which is a super food. The CBD hemp plant is grown just like marijuana and if the hemp plant is pollinated, CBD production immediately stops. Seeds are bad for CBD hemp cultivars. Furthering the confusion around this issue is the FDA 'advises' producers of CBD oil to omit the term 'CBD' or 'cannabinoids' from their labels, thereby leading producers to use the term HEMP OIL, which is not the same as HEMP SEED OIL. Hopefully, regulations and proper education will help clear this issue.
@delaneypaullus5952
@delaneypaullus5952 6 жыл бұрын
You're incorrect. CBD can still be extracted from the seeds, stalks, flowers... Industrial hemp does not flower, yet they extract CBD. Hemp oil is the byproduct of extracting the CBD from the pressed oil no matter if it came from stalks, seeds, flower, anything. It is what tends to be sold for lotions, shampoos, etc. That is the cool thing about hemp, you can get so many different products and uses from it and every single part of the plant. Love, An agricultural scientist Colorado State University
@JaredHempfield
@JaredHempfield 6 жыл бұрын
You're both mistaken, Cannabidiol does not come from the seed unless you count the husk. Pollinated plants do contain CBD etc. All female cannabis plants flower or there would be no seed production. CBD is short for cannabidiol, not cannabinoid. There's 113 cannabinoids, Cannabinol (CBN) being the most sedative of them all.

Just to clarify, what they were growing in Jamestown and the Massachusetts Bay colony was hemp, not marijuana. And they had a very hard time getting colonists to grow it, especially when they learned how well tobacco could grow in the colonies. Shipping had a serious shortage of hemp for rope used on sailing ships. That's why the crown wanted it planted in the colonies.

@jammapcb

you can actually make plastic from it as it has the most cellerlose of all the plants in nature. It is its own binder! Cellulose is the most abundant organic polymer found on Earth, and is a fundamental part of the cell walls of plants and many species of algae. Although cellulose is primarily used to make paper, it is also used to make a range of different plastics including celluloid, cellophane and rayon. hemp = far more environmentally friendly products. The reason why it was banned because any country can produce these products. Meaning oil companies do not have a monopoly over every country.
