I enjoyed this video so much-there’s a lot of great info! It’s helping me decide on my masters. I really chuckled at the amount of people who asked you Google-able questions in these comments though 😫 Google is available on the same internet y’all used to watch this video, people! So strange to keep asking all these very-searchable questions 😂

Thanks ShaRae, it was interesting to learn about it. I am currently evaluating which discipline to do my masters in, and there are a lot of unis offering Organizational or Occupational Psychology. All these tasks you mentioned were and are done by HR professionals in the organization I work and worked for. So I fail to see the benefit of pursuing the degree especially when having HR qualification already. Would you know? Maybe its benefit also may depend on one's country of residence. I've seen only one job post in many years where a big corporation actually employs an IO Psychologist. Else, there seems to be no demand over here.

I recently completed my BS in Psychology and I am torn between I/O psychology and clinical psychology for my masters degree. Your decision to go for your PhD in clinical psychology may prove to be a better option for me as well. I am very interested to know more about your course load for the I/O psychology masters program as well as your job search and experiences after you obtain your degree. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I would love to email you some additional questions as well. Thank you!

A regular manager can hire talent and measure performance. Why would you need an IO psychologist to help with that?
@sharaeman
@sharaeman 4 жыл бұрын
Joseph Ward Hwy Mainly because the I/O Psychologist has various performance assessments that they are experts in and the Manager wouldn’t have the needed experience. Managers also consult with Psychologists for advice on what types of assessments to use, some that they may not even know exists.

Hi ShaRae! I graduated with my Bachelors of psychology about a year ago. Since then i have been preparing myself to take the GRE and apply to grad schools. However, I am now stuck between clinical and I/o psych. what advice do you have for me on the success of i/o? Some say that I/o won't be worth it financially, is that true? Last, what advice do you have on applying to grad school? Thank you so much
@sharaeman
@sharaeman 9 жыл бұрын
vanessa Persaud Congrats on getting your Bachelors!!!! I completely understand you being torn between clinical and I/O. I was in the same situation and couldn't make my mind up either. Let me just tell you a little about my choice and the reasoning behind it. I am choosing to study clinical in a PhD program because I already have the I/O Masters and will be able to do both if I choose to once I'm done with my PhD. Also in most jurisdictions across the US (assuming you are in the US), you have to be licensed to be titled as a psychologist. One can become licensed as an I/O psychologist in some jurisdictions as well. This of course would be a non-mental health designation. Another reason I'm choosing a clinical PhD is because in I/O psychology in some states jobs can be limited. The thing to remember if you go that route is to not limit yourself by not being able to relocate. For instance in my state of KY I/O consultants are more limited than a state like NY. Check out www.bls.gov to get information on states in which the field is popular. I just wanted to have the option of working in both fields. Think hard about what which field you'll see yourself happy working in. Do you want to focus on helping individuals (Clinical) or do you want to help organizations and people mainly in groups or teams (I/O)? I firmly believe that you can't go wrong with either one. As far as I/O not being worth it! It’s worth it and in some states I/O psychologist make more than clinical psychologists. It just depends. Also in I/O psychology, your job title may not be "I/O Psychologist". You may be an Organizational Development Consultant, Organizational Change Manager... there are numerous titles that one can have when working in the field. Also think about how far you want to go with your education, or how long you want to stay in school. Some people are able to be successful with just a Masters when working as an I/O consultant and choose not to get a PhD in I/O. An I/O PhD of course with give you more options and remember that after getting the I/O PhD, you can always find a clinical re-specialization program that will allow you to practice clinical if you choose to. If you go the clinical route you know that you will have to get a PhD to practice as a psychologist. The cool thing about a PhD program in clinical psychology, is that many PhD programs will allow you to come in with a bachelors if your gpa and gre scores are good enough. This is due to many of the programs allowing you to do a Masters Thesis before you finish the PhD program. So you actually get a Masters while you're on your way to the PhD. When applying to grad school just make sure you study hard on the gre. Having good gre scores will be important in either of the programs you are applying to, especially at the PhD level. Also start thinking about what previous professors will be able to give you a good recommendation. For many programs you'll need at least 3. Research any school you choose and look closely at graduation and job placement rates. If you select a clinical program choose schools that are APA accredited. I hope this information helps! Reach out if you have any more questions! sharae.mansfield@gmail.com. Thanks

+Animagape Studios Thank you! Deciding on what to study is a tough decision. For me, it took, at least, a year or so the firmly come to the decision to study Business Psychology instead of Clinical Psychology. My advice is for you not to rush into deciding on your post-bachelor education, and take the time to research really and think about what your next steps are. I wish you luck. Reach out if you have questions.

What would you say are the 3 main psychological principles used in the workplace?
@sharaeman
@sharaeman 8 жыл бұрын
Remember that when psychological principles are used in the workplace the consultant is looking to solve some type of organizational problem. Many of the problems that are needing to be solved relate to the productivity and performance of the workforce. Of course the principles used will very by organization, but 3 vital ones are principles that relate to leadership enhancement/development, motivation and performance. I hope this helps!

Hello ShaRae! Great video it was very helpful and informative. I'm a Junior Organizational Leadership major in college and have recently started looking into the field of I/O Psychology. Many of the classes that I'm taking align with the concepts displayed in your video, but I don't have a psychology. Any advice on how to break into the field or gain experience before a potential grad school? I'm a Sociology minor btw.

@sharaeman
@sharaeman 8 жыл бұрын
+Rasheedah Najieb Hello, and thank you! Both Organizational Leadership and Sociology are closely related to I/O Psychology. Sociology is one of the first classes I took at the Doctorate level. I/O psychology can credit much of its beginnings of studying Organizational Behavior to sociologist and social psychology so it's no surprise that you're finding concepts in your study that align with I/O psychology. If you think you may want to work in I/O psychology or Organizational leadership development, it wouldn't hurt to get more psychology related classes under your belt. I didn't start with psychology at the bachelor level, however at the Masters level is when I actually started. I had a few psychology class when working towards my bachelor's and loved them so much that psychology seemed like a natural fit for me. Before going to grad school for a related I/O psychology degree you don't necessarily have to have previous experience, although it may be helpful for you to gain experience just to see if you are going down the right career path. A job in which you are working with people, like employee development and training or even an entry level HR profession would give you some experience. Did this help a bit? Thanks
@SheedahSunshine
@SheedahSunshine 8 жыл бұрын
This was extremely helpful thank you! I was considering taking some psych classes at my local community college over the summer or online to learn more. I'll definitely look into entry level HR jobs and working with the professional development program at school to gain some experience. Thank you again I really appreciate it!

You are very welcomed! I believe I responded to you in an email, but you raise and excellent question. Gaining experience in I/O psychology can be difficult to gain before going into a program, and you don't necessarily need to be a psychology major! The important thing is to make great grades in your bachelor's program so that you get into a great I/O psychology graduate program! I hope this helps!

It really sounds like a lot of B.S as everyone know that the work environment is in 99% of them all compared to torture. Either it is just mumbo jumbo and a course people study for getting a diploma and all ends there or this professional is actually inexistent in the vast majority of organizations.
