It doesn't differ from Formula 1 quali at all. Formula 1 just shows lap time, Indy shows average speed. But because the track length is known, average speed can be directly converted to lap time and lap time can be directly converted to average speed. Same thing, different way to show the statistics.

Ah yes. Another F1 boomer here. You need to accept that all types of racing aren't similar. Rallying is not about overtakes, it's about who is quickest around the route. Endurance racing is about who has the reliability and stays out of mistakes to come home ahead of everyone else and Indy 500 is about managing your fuel on more than 220 mph, trying to stay on a good racing line, making tough decisions on how to overtake in traffic without going off or crashing. Just go watch 2011 Indy 500 last laps. If it was that easy and "boring", Hildebrand wouldn't have crashed trying to avoid running into someone.

@@shahmirkhan1502 F1 fans are lost causes. They much rather see a car pass them every minute and a half rather than watch the whole action at once. They call this boring but rather watch Mercedes win every race with a total of about 2 overtakes a season.

Well at least it isn’t guaranteed that Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes will win every race before the season even starts.
