These cars were so brutally fast and gorgeous. I was 17 when this race happened and I remember reading 2 years later in AutoWeek that we'll remember this racing and these racecars like people did the original CanAm. That writer was right.

I attended the 1989 race as I was stationed at the adjacent Ft Ord. I’ve loved this place ever since.

pole for this race is still the official lap record . 3 seconds faster than 2019 indycar . these cars were beasts .

Penske #3 is the winner in 2000, Penske #3 kills Gonzalo Rodriguez in 1999... BTW Juan Montoya is wearing a special helmet design in memory of his lost friend Gonzalo.

@@heimburger4 Usually the images are gotten through Getty Images, or from the credentialed photographers hired by CART or AP freelancers.
