Ponds aren't easy, Adam. I have a spot where I want to put one in but I haven't gotten serious about getting it done. My neighbor across the road had a contractor put in a huge one on her property, it's nice and she's got it stocked with fish. I'll probably have him do mine. Another neighbor down the road has a big hole in front of his house that he can't keep water in. Down here in Owen County there is a lot of clay with the occasional sand seam, probably what my neighbor down the road got into. I'm told there are ways to protect against them but man it's a lot of money to take the risk. Anyway, hope you work it out. -John.

Thanks John. Yes. Thankfully we are 100% clay with no sand streams. Another positive (although more costly during the build) is that our pond is fully excavated and we don't have a dam. It can never be breached. I hope you are able to put one in at some point. It really changes your property for the better.

I would leave it as you have it now and see if any new problems show up. I would cover that pipe with dirt now as it hold water to protect it from mowers and a falling tree limb looks great keep up the good work

Thanks Eddie! I believe that's going to be my plan. It's seems to be working well so far. Good call about covering that pipe better. It's not an issue now, but was thinking I will need to cover/insulate it come the winter time! That could be a real issue.

One fix I have used was to fix overflow with bentonite clay and pushed down into the hole with a pipe ram. Once you stop the flow there is plenty of time to seal the pipe. Concrete works as a topping once the clay did its job. Yes you could put a ball valve or flapper valve on the drain pipe.

You can use a valve...slightly more expensive but easier to control

Yea, that may be the way I ultimately go. It would be nice to have better control over it

Hey mate. Why dont you add an elbow down on the end you modified and then put the end of smaller pipe to same height as top of concrete pipe? It should then not syphon until pond level reaches top of concrete pipe.

You might want to figure out where you low point in the pond is. If you away and you've got the pipe capped off and it rains, your pond will overflow and cut out the bank. Knowing where this will happen and then putting in your spillway there will prevent erosion from occurring in the event it does overflow.

Good call Pete! In theory, we shouldn't have a low point as the banks were graded using a laser level. The end where the overflow is WAS the low point, but we brought it up. I may play the "wait and see" game to figure out where it ultimately is. ha

If the storm you are talking about tuesday and wednedsay is the same one Arizona just had last night through this morning it will be a pretty decent one. Will you be able to fill the bottom of the overflow with something to seal it, or does that require the pond to be drained? Certainly there is some sort of underwater sealer right?

Why not have the person who put in the pipe come back out and put it in correctly?
