Inexpensive Bulk Aquarium Substrate

Feel free to share with others where you were able to find your substrate. or if you had worse luck than me feel free to let me know. the sooner we come together " but dont let the cat out of the bag" the better our chances our to save a couple bucks, or even a couple hundred bucks if you have as many aquariums as i do.

Black Diamond medium grit blasting sand at TSC is a really pretty almost black substrate currently $11.99 for 50 lbs

Good tips ! I love that you support local and small business. I do the same because as a business owner I know how hard it is to compete with big box stores on prices . I will always do better than big box stores with knowledge. Keep up the great videos !

This shit is impossible to find, everywhere I went, they looked at me like I was dumb, and had no idea what I was talking about. Went to pool stores, gardening stores, pet stores, tractor supply, and a few others. I ended up buying 3 bags of pea gravel from Home Depot, which is still too large, and I will try to sift the smaller pebbles into a bucket and use those, then toss the bigger stuff in the back yard...

Pool supply stores should carry filter sand. It's usually slightly finer than the smallest stuff he showed, but it's clean and pre-screened. Works great

Hi Kyle.. this is really good information to share. The expense for this type of fish supply is not necessary as there are comparable products like you shared! Excellet job Kyle!

I use pea gravel from Lowe's or home depot. 40# bag is maybe $5. Really dirty, so rinsed it well and let it dry in the sun. Had enough for 4 tanks with some left over. Also use lava rock for substrate and filter media. You can get a big bag of around $5.

I found that lowes pea gravel allowed too much food to fall into the gravel and pollute the water. Too large.

The biggest problem with sand is the smaller silt-like fines often mixed in with it. I'll bet you could get some cheap sand with decent sized particles, make your own filter out of a screen door mesh to filter out the fines, and mix the remainder with pea gravel.

I go to Landscaping companies they sell in bulk even cheaper than Lowe's or Home Depots in some cases

Wow! for that much substrate of that grain size, I would have to pay upwards of $100-$150 where I live. No joke, this stuff is sold at $50 per 10 lb bag.

Only a printed brand name some times unnecessarily increase the price of a commodity many folds.. A penny saved is a penny earned... Nice vdeo... Keep it up

I know all gravel has a generic name based on it's size, regardless of what it's used for. I thnk standard aquarium gravel used to be called #3 way back in the day. What is the current name or maybe the SKU #. Places may or may not have it around me and or may be able to order it, but driving around and looking at bags the store won't open doesn't make for much of a plan. I would appreciate it if you might share the current order catalog name and sku number for the gravel you found. Thanks.

Just got to the lake and it is free. My first tank substrate was from a playground because i was super broke and that was the closest free source of sand available.

When I lived on a rural property what I found was that country people talk less (they don't waste words) and are way more observant....especially with animals, plants and seasonal changes.... City people tend to rely on others for their information and know how. ....we have city kids that know nothing about where their food comes from or the names of it...

Aww that's the color PFS that I want. The only pool filter sand I can find is hth pool sand from Ace hardware and it's too light-tan for my liking. I want a darker/browner tint like that. I should try a pool supply place.

you may have to search and make some calls , but if you are able to locate a place that can get it for you , it will save you tons of $$ on new tanks. also look into black diamond blasting sand if you want cheap black sand the 10/40 grit is the largest and it makes a great substrate. it can be found at almost every tractor supply and some hardware stores will order it for you

Kyles Wild World oh I have many tanks with black diamond blasting sand. It's a great substrate! The problem is there's no tractor supply in this state... That requires a trip to northern Washington or California! I don't know why we don't have them and it makes no sense either but everytime I am near one, I pick up 4 hundred pounds of it. I went on a wild goose chase a couple years ago trying to find it, checked pretty much any kind of shop it would possibly be at and it's unobtanium here without a tractor supply! Some people say Harbor Freight carries it but I checked 6 of them and none of them know what it is or have ever had it the only blasting media they have is a box of freaking Walnut shells or whatever it was.

huh thats crazy, it should be able to be ordered , walnut shells i think are used by sea ports since they are non toxic but BDBS is also used by sea ports for the same reason. no idea . i am currently trying to hunt down the large grain size since most places dont carry it and that is seemingly difficult to find too

@@teddybonkers3580 I too searched many harbor freight and even the new one just built close by... like u said none know what BDBS is and have walnut shell crap too... tractor supply is like 45 mins from me but if they have bdbs I'd grab it and I'm going to check the landscaping company across the street from me. If they don't have the Dolen or the other good one maybe they can order it
