Sergeant Major Downing - I am so glad you made this video. Seriously. I was just watching another video earlier this week in which the host claimed, "Military veterans aren't really 'gun guys' like us civilians." It was a funny comment and it earned a chuckle from me. But, I think this sentiment misses a bigger picture when it comes to veterans' regard for weapons. Veterans appreciate guns! It just that, whether we were shot at in training or combat, or both - we learned that even pretty shitty guns are lethal. Plus, we've used firearms in such a wide variety of combat environments and under so many specific conditions that the veteran cannot help but to mature his/her understanding of firearm effectiveness. Do we have our favorites? Hell yes! It's just rare for a military veteran to be an "aficionado gun boi" because we are acutely aware that even the weapons we least like...they're still lethal. They work! And in specific combat environments, they might even have a slight edge. So, it's disingenuous for a veteran to say, "That gun don't work." Yes, actually it will and it does work. Thanks for sharing this video. Much agreed.

Finally I find someone who addresses problems with weapons mounted lights. IMO, every 5 man Rifle Team needs a 7.62x51 rifle in it. Why? To stop light vehicles, to penetrate barriers and fire support to reach out and challenge other longer range weapons systems.

With modern camo, a great magnified optic helps not only to aim at range, but pick out the partially obscuredb target from behind cover and concealment.

This is probably the most helpful rifle setup explanation video I’ve ever seen. I love how you remove your own preferential biases and just point out the practical benefits and practical trade-offs of each component, while adding wisdom from experience. I’ve been doing this stuff for decades, and nobody has ever made a more compelling case for why I might want a bayonet, or why I might not want a pistol or a white light (in a purely infantry setting). Considerations I’m going to have to reassess. According to the majority of the internet, every rifle needs a white light, the only correct sling is a two point, you always need a pistol, and passive aiming isn’t even a consideration because lasers rule. It’s amazing how much flat range wisdom is completely negated (or at least scrutinized) with real world experience and force on force training. Thank you for the perspective!

20" M16-styled AR is literally the best option. Perfect recoil impulse, muzzle velocity, and weight.

One last thing, on piggyback dots. Measure your height over bore, and then adjust your zero to account for that. I run a 75yd zero with my piggyback dot (+4.5" height over bore for me) on a 20" rifle, and its backed up to about 55 yards on my 10.5" setup. It makes it really fast and really easy to engage enemies at range with a very flat trajectory. Run your numbers through a ballistic calculator. Youll find the top dot has a lot of utility outside of CQB and passive aiming. Especially for indexing sight picture at very long ranges. Cover target with dot, drop behind scope and you should be on or very close to your target.

replacing all of my white lights with picatinny bayonet mounts now, thank you for the based opinions

The first thing I thought when the video started was what we used to say on the radio when horsing around; “lost three, this is lost one, are you lost too, over?” As a career Infantryman (1983-2009) I can tell our Infantry is going to have to re-learn the skills we picked up from our Vietnam era counterparts that gave us a sharp edge for fighting in a Northern European battle environment. The 7.62 has a benefit of having good power to punch through light vegetation and maintaining its velocity and accuracy at intermediate ranges but, the ammo is heavier to carry a basic load of 210 rounds. I prefer my 16” M4 carbine in 6.8 SPC as a comfortable medium but in a large group unit, it will be tough for me to get more ammo so I also have my M-21 and standard M4 with a few thousand rounds. Just keep things simple and carry a couple spare small parts just in case something is lost while cleaning. Keep all your gear as light as possible because humping it for 24 miles can be a bitch in the summer heat. As for civilian body armor, it’s wiser to buy a set of steel plates instead of the USGI type because e steel plates will be able to be reused until you can replace them if you’re hit a couple times, ceramic plates don’t really provide that option. Bull pups, folding stock weapons are perfect for short range engagements (within 100-200 meters). Your platoon should have a couple men with .308 that can place solid suppressive fire as team members move to better positions or to envelope their enemy. And for gods sake, have a lot of smoke grenades and use them to screen movement.

Brent as a very old Marine, (1969 to 1973) I will stick with my M1a1, I know and love the platform and still smart enough to know I'm too old to run and gun, but I can still make you have a bad day even with iron sights at a distance. Did carry an M 16 a1 in Nam but first love will always be the M14.

43:05 Britain used to give pistols to their units that were going to Afghanistan for green-on-blue attacks. Some other armies have each infantryman get a pistol, the biggest I would say is France, but apparently, this can vary from unit to unit and is more about mission and circumstances than anything else but the option is there, but most armies do not issue them for the reasons talked about.

Thank you for this presentation. You've validated most of my own philosophy, and you've given me some added good things to consider as improvement to my preparedness.

A solid set of backup iron and a key or tool to remove your optic are must haves on every rifle build. The first thing i do with every new rifle build is drop on a quality set of backup irons and zero them. I've also taken to running a top mounted dot over a magnified optic. Im a huge fan of running 3-9x, 3-12x, and the 4-14x specifically from Primary Arms. The HUD DMR reticle is invaluable for quick information to a rifleman. ACOGs are always a great option. A solid 3-9x with a BDC reticle is hard to find, but they are out there. Shepherd Scopes puts out a really solid 3-9x you can find on sale for $300, and that 3x base magnification can be used in cqb in a pinch.

At 44:47 the photograph showing the GI holding the German soldier at gunpoint also reveals the GI has TWO bayonets, note the steel scabbard of a German 84/98 III poking out over his right leg - never hurts to have an extra! Great video! Agree on all points. Especially appreciate addressing the light and IR laser topic that always gets overlooked or misunderstood. One thing i'd like to add is the importance of muzzle devices. Compensators and muzzle brakes are good fun and can make you shoot faster in competitions and such but a good flash hider or a can is going to conceal you better and keep you alive longer.

The only comment on bayonets -- practice with them mounted so you know the difference they make in your point of aim/impact. Outstanding presentation Sgt Maj. Semper Fi

related to the point with the ND with the light, I remember I begged our armorer for another charging handle because we were issued our rifle with an extension on the charging handle, and it would grip and catch on your equipment ALL THE TIME, unless you held the rifle several inches from your body constantly, which would kill your shoulders with time.. We had Opfor report several times on exercises the first thing they heard were literally the charging handles of the guys as they came through the forest at night lol.

If you must have a mounted white light, get a rifle scope cap that will fit it snuggly. Then duct tape the ring securely to the light body. If the cap shows any inclination to easily pop open slap duct tape (hopefully in a subdued color) across the cap. You can tuck the end of the tape under onto itself so that you have a tab to pull it open with. Matt

40:50 Another use case for the bayonet is for use against animals when you might not want to shoot off any rounds. Dan Sharp of @popsmokemedia tells a story from a deployment to Iraq where he had his squad fix bayonets before making their way through an alley where they were frequently nipped on and harassed by street dogs.

Just got back from doing National Guard AT (2 week) with the NH Infantry up in Vermont. My prior experience was 7 years active Army Cavalry. Got out but wanted to go back and do combat arms and NH only had infantry or artillery, so I went infantry. During training, we conducted react to close ambush and squad assault, and during both in the back of my mind I went "Man, I really wish I could double-tap the enemy I walk over with a bayonet instead of having to waste 2 more rounds of ammo on a potentially already dead individual," and "Man, we're close as shit to these guys." lol. Mounted life had me thinking bayonets were antiquated, but after doing some real infantry work, I now fully respect and advise having one at least with you if not on your rifle when you hit that release point to conduct your attack. Additionally, I had made very similar arguments to a friend of mine not too long ago on the topic of white light. Only consideration on that you missed was the weight consideration as well. An infantry rifle needs to be as light as possible with as much sensible capability as possible, and for me a white light just isn't worth those oz., especially not on the front of the rifle. Thanks for sharing your experiences. As someone who has trained his whole life in martial arts, with and without weapons, I have respect for the bayonet. As a armed prepared citizen, any fighting I would be doing would be guerrilla warfare. So probably wouldn't need the bayonet but you never know. I always carry some sort of knife.

You make a good point about the bayonet, especially when it comes to dealing with prisoners. In MCT we overtook our enemy, but the instructors threw us a curve ball by attacking us after they surrendered so I shot them (with blanks). They told me that was the wrong move and I didn't do a good job intimidating them. That bayonet would have helped.

Brent I am glad you mentioned the bayonet! Not only is it useful to throw on the weapon but the sheath of the bayonet has an attachment where you can attach the bayonet and use it for cutting C wire. I see a lot of people carrying tools like clippers that are often worn and suck at cutting but I used the bayonet with the attachment and it cut like butter. It enables everyone who carry’s one to breach an obstacle a often overlooked capability of the bayonet.

Another great video by Brent. Thank you. I built an AR with a 24" heavy barrel, fixed stock. Very accurate. I know you wouldn't carry that as it is very heavy. But for a fixed position, using the same ammo (5.56) as the team, makes for a great long range rifle.

I like having a weapon mounted light. When not many people have night vision, it's great to have when you know the enemy are there, and just need to pinpoint them. It was useful to turn the tide of a raid in the middle of the night at 1Shep on the defense. It has daylight applications in urban environments for illuminating inside steuctures and vehicles where it's still dark. It absolutely requires training a practice to make sure it operates cleanly without NDs, and putting some bikini caps or light caps.

Love the old-school tiger stripe BDUs. While I have heavier weapons better suited to a designated marksman role, at 50 years old I would rather carry an AR-15 M4 clone with a LPVO (I use Primary Arms), BUIS, and an IR laser aiming device for use with nods. Since I’m still using PVS-7 nods, I kind of need the IR laser, though I know it aims at me just as much as it aims downrange. With the number of such weapons in CONUS, they will remain a viable system longer than I’m going to be vertical.

On NDs for weapon lights, I've used my 3d printer to cap off the head with a rubberized TPU polymer. Just tie off the cap to the light body with a hair tie or rubber band. Keeping your light in a leather pouch clipped onto your vest is a good way to mitigate NGd on light too.

Coming from the Army side here. We dont own the night anymore we just rent it so passive aiming is probably gonna be the way forward and anybody bitching about flagging needs to be punched right square in the dick. Thats a training issue. Other thing is the slings. When we were in Kuwait getting ready to go north we got all 3 kinds of them. What we learned doing casevac drills is that 1 points will destroy your legs from your front sight post. The 2 points can be made to work with and the 3 points just get tangled up on every damn thing. All that said I completely agree with you and good vid brother

The only time I've had sights fail it was my irons. Whilst backpacking I was climbing up a rock face and the front sight post of my AR-15 got banged against the rock and the actual front sight got sheared off. Had I not had an optic on that rifle I would have been boned. Yes, it is a single anecdotal data point but it does go against the prevailing wisdom that it is the optics that are so delicate and the most obvious fail-point. Regardless, the truth is it is good to have option and backups if possible. Bayonets are also good for sticking into places you might not want to stick your fingers.

Bayonets are definitely useful tools and a huge CQB force multiplier. When the engagement gets close enough for a bayonet to be used, you are gonna panic shit your pants if your enemy has one and you dont

When you watch videos of the trenches and one man goes through 6 mags almost back to back to stop an enemy advancement and also they go through like 6 to 12 grabades or similar explosive. Really shows you need to be able to brong alot of mags and ammo

one thing regarding the flashlight is that for the very reason you mentioned the only flashlight I consider as acceptable is Surefire because on surefire weapon lights you can turn the bezzel to an " OFF" position and even if you prrss eitger the endcap button or the remote pad it wont turn on. Idk why any of the other flashlight companies dont include that feature into their bezels. Great video as always

My fix for white light ND has been the surefire scout vampire that by rotating the head can switch between white, off then IR with a 100 concepts light cover for a secondary level of protection

Something I realized when you were talking lights is a lot of people at the range are running muzzle brakes. Yes they can cut down on recoil and muzzle climb ,but in a shtf situation. They can get you and members of your group seriously dead because of extreme muzzle flash and muzzle blast at night giving your position away. I have some on range guns, but not on a shtf gun. Just thought I would mention this. Just subscribed. Good vid. and well thought out and presented.

Hey Brent, Great video. Just on the light discipline, we had a guy in training who brought a radio alarm clock to wake themselves up on stag one night and forgot the reset it out on a LPOP the following night. It went off in the LPOP and rang for a good minute trying to find it in the dark. Needless to say the individual in question ended up being called "ding a ling" for their career. :)

I'm trying out a 4x32 compact fixed power with piggy back red dot. Probably going to go with magnification on most of my rifles now. Except my 1936 Marlin 30-30 the old irons are all it needs.

Primary arms prizm is a great optic for the price and durability. I ran with an acog in the military and then aimpoint. Tip.. Keep the covers and put the front cover on the optic and you can run it like a red dot for close quarters like an old school RD.
